  • Rice cultivar 'Janganbyeo' was cultivated by irrigating the saline waters of high salinity (3.0%) and medium saliniy (1.5%) for 4 days, and low salinity (0.5%) for 30 days at tillering, early meiosis and heading stage. Leaf injury due to salinity was most severe at tillering stage in 1999, but at heading stage in 2000. Heading date was delayed by 1 to 5 days by treatment of saline waters only at tillering stage. Culm length and panicle length were most severely shortened by treatment at early meiosis stage. Yield and yield components except for panicle number were decreased most by high salinity treatment regardless of growth stages. In particular, ripening ratio and grain weight among the yield components were decreased most conspicuously by the saline water treatment regardless of salinity and growth stage. Regarding grain weight grain-filling rate and duration, there is no remarked difference among the concentrations and treatment durations of saline water at tillering stage. However, their reductions were very different among the concentrations and treatment durations of saline water at early meiosis stage, being greatest when treated with high salinity for 4 days and followed by low salinity for 30 days. Also their reductions were very severe only when treated with high salinity for 4 days at heading stage.

  • This study was conducted to know the effect of low radiation during grain filling stage of rice on its grain yield, components, physicochemical properties and palatability, compared to the effect of natural light. Ripened grain ratio, 1000 grain weight of brown rice, milled rice yield of Mipum, Hopum, and Sindongjin were reduced as the shading treatments become higher. After harvest, physicochemical properties of rice influencing eating quality were investigated. Protein content of milled rice was increased, but palatability was decreased by shading treatments. Change of milled rice proteins and palatability due to shading treatments were found to be less in Mipum than that in Hopum and Sindongjin. With regard to amylogram properties, shading treatments resulted in a significant decrease in peak trough final breakdown viscosities of rice flour, though it increased pasting temperature and setback viscosity. The degree of the 55% shading effect was more intensive than the 35% shading effect in changes of ripened grain ratio, 1000 grain weight of brown rice, milled rice yield and milled rice protein.

  • A field experiment was conducted to confirm the effect of phosphorus, calcium silicate and different kinds of organic matter to a red-yellow heavy clay textured paddy soil, developed on alluvial terrace. 1. The yield response of phosphorus was very high in both Tongil (Indica x lap.) and Jinheung (Japonica type) varieties. Twenty percent of yield increase with 56kg $P_2O_5$ per 10a. 2. Yield increase by application of phosphorus was closely resulted from increase of tillers per plant. The increases of tillers per plant as observed at harvesting stage by phosphorus fertilization were 3.6 tillers in Tongil, 1.9 in Jinheung, while ripening ratio adversely was decreased 4% in Tongil and increased 3% in Jinheung. 3. High correlation between P content and yield was found at earformation and heading stages. The content of P in rice plant necessary to produce maximum yield in this soil was 0.8 percent at earformation stage. 4. The effect of silicate was not significant for Tongil but was obvious for Jinheung, and the effect of compost and rice husk was also significant for Jinheung. 5. Addition of silicate and lime to phoshorus treatment decreased the nitrogen content of rice plant, especially in Tongil. Accordingly, significant responses of silcate and lime seems be appeared by increasing the rate of nitrogen application.

  • The effects of the various pattern of paddy-upland switching system on rice yield and the nutrient absorption characteristics were examined in the paddy field of Seokcheon silty soil for three years from 1989 to 1991. The obtained results of the two years from 1990 to 1991 are as follows : 1. Rice grain yields were high in the order of potato-cabbage>soybean>continuous paddy plot for the second and third year. Among the rice yield components the numbers of grains per panicle and the rate of ripening grain exerted the yield increase. 2. The contents and absorption amounts of nutrient in harvested straw plant increased with the incease of rice yields during the second and third year(1990~1991). The amounts of all nutrient absorption increased with the increased level of nitrogen fertilization at the third year(1991). 3. The periodical change of leaf green color was responded well with the content of ammonia concentration of soil solution.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the differences in physicochemical properties of soil, grain yield and milling recovery ratio and grain appearance of rice grown in long-term no-till and ordinary till systems. The paddy in no-till rice system was unploughed but straw-mulched for 15 years from 1988 to 2002 at the Experimental Paddy of Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services, while the paddy in ordinary till system was ploughed and puddled every crop year, A 5cm organic layer was formed in 11-year no-till rice system, in which exchangeable cation and phosphate were accumulated. In no-till paddy organic matter, bulk density and solid phase of surface soil significantly increased, while pH, exchangeable cation, phosphate, liquid and gaseous phase decreased. Tillage made the very top soil soft, but made deep soil below 5cm significantly hard. In the 1st year of no-till, topsoil showed hard, but in the process of the time in no-till system, the top- and sub-soil showed softer, Yield and yield components of rice showed no differences between till- and no-till rice systems. Milling recovery ratio and grain appearance were not significantly different between no-till and till-rice systems.

  • In order to find out the optimum seeding date of Job's tears, this study was investigated ecological characters, yield components and yield of Jang Seong native variety at 6 seeding dates (March 20, March 30, April 10, April 20, April 30 and May 10). Emergence period and heading period were shortened as the seeding date was late, and the number of leaves on the main stem was increased as the seeding date was early. Maturing period was 63-66 days when we seeded in March 20, March 30, April 10 and April 20, and it was delayed 68-77 days when we seeded on April 3$^{\circ}$ and May 10. Culm length was longest in April 10 seeding (it was 186.6 cm), and it grew short in the early and the late seeding, but there was no significant difference among seeding dates. Stem diameter was thickest in April 10, and April 20 seeding, that is, thickened to 10.1 mm, and it was thin in the early and the late seeding. Productive tiller number per hill was increased most in April 10 and April 20 seeding, that is, increased to 6.2, and it was decreased in the early and the late seeding. 100 grain weight was heaviest in April 10 seeding; it was 10.7 g, and it was light in the early and the late seeding. Ripeness rate was highest in April 10 seeding (87.4%), and it was lowest in May 10 seeding (76.3%). Grain yield was highest in April 10 seeding (602.8kg per l0a); therefore this period is regarded as optimum seeding date. C. protein, C. fat, C. fiber and C. starch showed significant difference among seeding dates, and C. protein showed possitive correlation (r =0.9811 **) and C. fiber Negative collelation (r =-0.8937*) with seeding dates.

  • The proposed hypothesis that the effects of climatic factors during ripening period (from 10 days before heading to 30 days after heading) on ripened grain ratio are equal on the level of canopy and on the level of tiller in that canopy of rice plant appeared to be agreeable. The followings were found according to the analysis of ripening structure at tiller level. 1. The optimum ripening temperature (mean air temperature during ripening period) was $21^{\circ}C$ for Jinheung and $22^{\circ}C$ for IR667-Suwon 214. 2. The minimum mean solar radiation ($cal\;cm^{-2}\;day^{-1}$) of ripening period was not greater than 240 for Jinheung and greater than 270 for IR 667-Suwon 214. 3. The ripened grain ratio was not different from main culm to first tillers of second order of main culm in Jinheung but greatly decreased from 4th tiller of first order of main culm in IR667 and the number of grain per main culm was greater in IR667 than in Jinheung indicating that yield of IR667 could be increased by increasing the number of main culm. 4. The last heading date insuring optimum ripening period appeared to be 25th in August for Jinheung and 30th in August for IR667 in Suweon.

  • The study was done to determine the proper transplanting dates and seedling ages of rice when mechanical transplanting was attempted. Heading dates of the Milyang #23, developed from Tong-il rice was delayed by delayed transplanting and the percent of filling grain was also low. The proper heading dates for the variety should be the first part of August and the transplanting should be done by the end of May. The presumed last days for the transplantation was considered early part of June. 30 to 40 days old seedlings were very effective to have healthy rooting systems. However, the Milyang #15 had shown more tolerance to the late transplantation than Milyang #23 and the degree of delaying heading dates due to the delayed transplantation was rather smaller than that of the Milyang #23. Even when the Milyang #15 was transplanted on June 30, the heading dates were around the middle of August and the ripening percentage was comparatively high and yield was also high. Therefore, the proper heading dates of the Milyang #15 might be around the middle of August and transplanting dates should be the first part of June. The possible last dates of transplantation of the Milyang #15 was assumed to be the last days of June and the proper seedling ages would be 20 to 30 day after sowing.

  • This study was carried out to determine the economic injury level of the rice leaffolder,Cnaphalocrocis medinalis G.. The damage aspects of rice plant (at tilling stage) by leaf folders at different larval density per plant were studied in pot experiment (24 cm in diameter, 18 cm in height). One leaf folder consumed 6-7 leaves during larval stage. The damage by leaf folders was simulated by cutting off 0, 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90% of leaves before and after heading stage July 15th (at panicle initiation stage) and August 15th (at milk stage), respectively. When leaves were cut before the heading of rice, the linear relationships between the leaf cutting rate (X) and each factors of yield (Y) were as following; for grain maturity it was Y = -9.379X + 83.630 ($R^{2}=0.493$),\;Y = 0.139X + 0.490 ($R^{2}=0.925$) for yield, and Y = -4.880X + 81.116 ($R^{2}=0.665$) for head rice. When leaves were cut after the heading of rice, it was Y = -23.0l4X + 83.589 ($R{2}=0.915$), for grain maturity, Y=0.141X + 3.466 ($R^{2}=0.842$) for yield, and Y = -13.795X + 81.964 ($R^{2}=0.898$) for head rice. We found that when leaf cutting after the heading stage caused more damage than before the heading in terms of yield and yield components. Based on theses results the economic threshold level was estimated to be 30% and 7% leaf loss before and after heading stage.
