  • In this study, we propose a practical method to improve the clarity and the period of the beat in a Korean bell. Proper beating in vibration and sound is very important feature in Korean bell. An equivalent ring theory is applied and finite element analysis is performed to determine the condition of the asymmetry of the bell. The clearity and the period of the beat are improved by attaching a counter mass or decreasing local thickness. This paper shows that the improved the attaching a counter mass or decreasing local thickness. This paper of the beat are improved by attaching a counter mass or decreasing local thickness. This paper shows that the amount and position of the local variation for the required beat condition can be predicted by using the equivalent model, The predicted results are verified by the experiment.

  • For box girders in which the longitudinal tendon is profiled in the inclined webs, longitudinal prestressing force will induce transverse effects as well as longitudinal ones. In this paper, the method to estimate transverse effects induced by longitudinal prestressing is proposed. The concept of transverse equivalent loading which is calculated through longitudinal prestressing analysis is developed. The transverse stress in slabs of box girders due to longitudinal prestressing are investigated. The comparison of numerical results of the proposed method and those of folded plate method represents that the method is reasonable. Numerical analyses are carried out depending on the parameters such as web inclination and ratio of girder length to tendon eccentricity. Analysis results show that when only prestressing are considered the magnitude of transverse stress in slabs of box girder is not so large. However, if the other stresses due to dead and live load et al. are superposed on these stresses, it may be that the longitudinal prestressing effects are significant.

  • Nonlinear response structural optimization using equivalent static loads (NROESL) has been proposed. Nonlinear response optimization is solved by sequential linear response optimization with equivalent static loads which are generated from the nonlinear responses and linear stiffness matrix. The linear stiffness matrix should be obtained in NROESL, and this process can be fairly difficult for some applications. Proportional transformation of loads (PTL) is proposed to overcome the difficulties. Equivalent static loads are obtained by PTL. It is the same as NROESL except for the process of calculating equivalent static loads. PTL is developed for large-scale probems. First, linear and nonlinear responses are evaluated from linear and nonlinear analyses, respectively. At a DOF of the finite element method, the ratio of the two responses is calculated and an equivalent static load is made by multiplying the ratio and the loads for linear analysis. Therefore, the mumber of the equivalent static loads is as many as that of DOF's and an equivalent static load is used with the reponse for the corresponding DOF in the optimization process. All the equivalent static loads are used as multiple loading conditions during linear response optimization. The process iterates until it converges. Examples are solved by using the proposed method and the results are compared with conventional methods.

  • Abrasiveness of rock plays an important role on the wear of rock cutting tools. In this study, Cerchar abrasiveness tests were carried out to assess the abrasiveness of 19 different Korean rocks. Cerchar abrasiveness test is widely used to assess the abrasiveness of rock because of its simplicity and inexpensive cost. This study examines the relationship between Cerchar Abrasiveness Index (CAI) and mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, porosity, shore hardness of rock), and the effect of quartz content, equivalent quartz content, which was obtained from XRD analysis. As a result of test, CAI was more influenced by petrographical properties than by the bonding strength of the matrix material of rock. CAI prediction model which consisted of UCS and EQC was proposed. CAI decreased linearly with the hardness of the steel pin. Numerical analysis was performed using Autodyn-3D for simulating the Cerchar abrasiveness test. In the simulations, most of pin wear occurred during the initial scratching distance, and CAI increased with the increase of normal loading.

  • In structural optimization, static loads are generally utilized although real external forces are dynamic. Dynamic loads have been considered in only small-scale problems. Recently, an algorithm for dynamic response optimization using transformation of dynamic loads into equivalent static loads has been proposed. The transformation is conducted to match the displacement fields from dynamic and static analyses. The algorithm can be applied to large-scale problems. However, the application has been limited to size optimization. The present study applies the algorithm to shape optimization. Because the number of degrees of freedom of finite element models is usually very large in shape optimization, it is difficult to conduct dynamic response optimization with the conventional methods that directly threat dynamic response in the time domain. The optimization process is carried out via interfacing an optimization system and an analysis system for structural dynamics. Various examples are solved to verify the algorithm. The results are compared to the results from static loads. It is found that the algorithm using static loads transformed from dynamic loads based on displacement is valid even for very large-scale problems such as shape optimization.

  • A finite model eye based on longitudinal spherical aberration is designed by an optimization method. Longitudinal spherical aberration for pupil diameter between 1 mm and 8 mm is graphed theoretically and compared with other model eyes. The chromatic dispersions are adjusted to fit experimentally observed chromatic aberration of the eye. This is a finite model eye with four a spheric refracting surfaces. It has an effective focal length of 15.842 mm. A designed reduced eye has an equivalent power of 63.12 Diopter, curvature radius of 5.281 mm, index of 1.33333, and axial length of 21.123 mm.

  • Spatial and seasonal variations of community structure of demersal fishes in Asan Bay were studied using seasonal samples collected by an otter trawl from autumn 1991 to summer 1992. For each sampling station, three trawl hauls were completed to obtain a reliable sample. Of 34 species identified, Cynoglossus joyneri, Johnius belengeri, Zoraces gillii and Thrissa koreana accounted for $93\%$ of the individuals collected. The former three dominant species were more abundant on the finer sediment of the inner bay than on the sandy bottom of the outer bay. Spatial variation of community structure of demersal fishes was analysed by principal component analysis using rank correlation. The community structure did not show a spatial difference, but a clear seasonal trend. This distribution pattern seems to be related significantly to the seasonal temperature fluctuation and to the active mixing of the water by strong tidal current of the bay.

  • Seasonal samples of demersal fish off Yongkwang were collected by an otter trawl from June 1986 to March 1987, and analyzed in terms of species composition and abundance. Of 33 species indentified, Johnius grypotus, Chaeturichthys stigmatias, Argyrosomus argentatus and Cynoglossus joyneri predominated in abundance, consisting 81.9% in the total number of species and 71.4% in biomass. The number of species and abundance were comparatively high in warmer months, and a resident species Cynoglossus joyneri and migrants such as Johnius grypotus and Argyrosomus argentatus were predominated. In cold months, the number of species and abundance were low, and Chaeturichthys stigmatias and Zoarces gillii were dominated. The relative abundance in major species of the present study shows a similar seasonal trend to that obtained in 1995. The relative abundance of major species occurred in the shallow coastal waters of southwestern Korea was highly correlated to the tidal velocity. J. grypotus and C. stigmatias declined in abundance while C. joyneri increased as the tidal velocity increased. This trend in abundance of the major fishes seems to be related to the form of body. The characteristics being flat of C. joyneri could be the major cause of sustaining in the water of high tidal mixing.

  • To improve the effectiveness and economics the bridge design methodology considering the bridge/rail longitudinal analysis and bridge/vehicle dynamic effect suggested in this study. The reliability-based Life-Cycle Costs(LCC) effective optimum design is applied to a 2-main steel girder bridge, 5$\times$(1@50m) for comparison with conventional design, initial cost optimization and equivalent LCC optimization. As a result of the optimum design based on reliability, it may be stated that the design of High-Speed railway bridges considering the bridge/rail longitudinal analysis and bridge/vehicle dynamic effect are more efficient than typical existing bridges and LCC optimization without respect to bridge/rail longitudinal analysis and bridge/vehicle dynamic effect. The result of optimization design considering the interaction, design methodology suggested in this study, is higher than result of initial cost optimization design in initial cost, but that has the advantage than result of initial cost optimization design in expected LCC.
