To evaluate the numerical method in simulation of diffusion flames and to see the effects of strain rate and fuel concentration on the flame radius and thickness, the nonpremixed methane-air counterflow flames in microgravity were simulated axisymmetrically by using the MST Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The $1000^{\circ}C$ based flame radius and thickness were investigated for the mole fraction of methane in the fuel stream, $X_m=20,\;50,\;and\;80\%$ and the global strain rates $a_g=20,\;60,\;and\;90s^{-1}$ for each mole fraction. The flame radius increased with the global strain rate while the flame thickness decreased linearly as the global strain rate increased. The flame radius decreased as the mole fraction increased, but it was not so sensitive to the mole fraction compared with the global strain rate. Since there was good agreement in the nondimensional flame thickness obtained with OPPDIF and FDS respectively, it was confirmed that FDS is capable of predicting well the counterflow flames in a wide range of strain rate and fuel concentration.

Consolidation of dredged fill has become important task for site treatment. The variation of stratum thickness during consolidation processing needs to be taken into consideration since hydraulic fill would go through a much larger scale strain than land soil when it is subject to a load. In this study, the consolidation period considering the variation of stratum thickness was analyzed and compared the results with those of existing consolidation studies which did not consider the variation of stratum thickness. According to the results of the study, the consolidation period of the ground with a larger strain was calculated more close to observed value in case of Mikasa theory which takes the variation of stratum thickness into consideration.

The original Mindlin-type degenerated shell element perform reasonably well for moderately thick shell structures. However, when full integration for analysis of thin shell is used to evaluate the stiffness matrix, the stiffness of shell element is often over-estimated due to shear or membrane locking phenomena. To correct this problem, the formulation of the new degenerated shell element is derived by the combination of two different techniques. The first type of elements(TypeⅠ) has used assumed shear strains in the natural coordinate system to overcome the shear locking problem, the reduced integration technique in in-plane strains(membrane strains) to avoid membrane locking behaviour. Another element(TypeⅡ) has applied the assumed strains to both of membrane strain and transverse shear strains. The improved degenerated shell element has been tested by several numerical problems of shell structures. Numerical results indicate that this shell element shows fast convergence and reliable solutions.

It this study, beam-type bend specimen is used to evaluate the interlaminar fracture toughness of laminated composite under mixed-mode deformations. The specimen is loaded under three-point bending and hence produced mixed-mode deformations in the vicinity of the crack tip according to the variation of the thickness ratio on delamination plane. Total energy release rate is obtained by elementary beam theory considering the effect of shear deformation. The partitioning of total value into mode-I and mode-II components is also performed. The mixed-mode interlaminar fracture toughness is evaluated by experiments on specimens with several thickness ratios of delamination plane. As the part of delamination plane is thicker, the effect of shear deformation on total energy release rate is increased. Beam-type bend specimen men may be applied to obtain informations on the mixed-mode interlaminar fracture behavior of laminated composites.

Electronic products utilizing flexible devices experience harsh mechanical deformations in real-use environments. As a result, researches on the mechanical reliability of these flexible devices have attracted considerable interest among researchers. This study employed previous bending strain models and finite element analysis to predict the maximum bending strain of metal films deposited on flexible substrates. Bending experiments were simulated using finite element analysis with variations in the material and thickness of the thin films, and the substrate thickness. The results were compared with the strains predicted by existing models. The distribution of strain on the surface of film was observed, and the error rate of the existing model was analyzed during bending. Additionally, a modified model was proposed, providing mathematical constants for each case.

This study is a part of research for developing the technologies of long life pavements having more than 40-year design life. The objective of this study is to develop the simplified design procedure for determining the layer thickness and modulus of the long life pavement. A synthetic database was established using the finite element program of a pavement structure with various combinations of layer thickness and modulus. The synthetic database includes the structural and material information, surface deflection, and critical pavement responses. Using the developed synthetic database, this paper suggests the minimum layer thickness and modulus for long life pavements bared on the limited strain level concept. Results demonstrate that the pavement greater than 410mm of total AC layer thickness is considered as the long life pavements regardless of the material characteristics and thickness in each layer. To become a long life pavement, a total thickness of AC layer should be greater than 250mm. The design procedure for determining the layer thickness and modulus of the pavements with AC layer thickness ranging from 250 to 410mm is also presented in this paper.

The main object of this research is to minimize the shock effects which frequently result in fatal damage in offshore wind turbine on impact of barge. The collision between offshore wind turbine and barge is generally a complex problem and it is often impractical to perform rigorous finite element analyses to include all effects and sequences during the collision. On applying the impact force of a barge to the offshore wind turbine, the maximum acceleration, internal energy, and plastic strain are calculated for each load case using the finite element method. A parametric study is conducted with the experimental data in terms of the velocity of barge, thickness of the offshore wind turbine, and thickness and Mooney-Rivlin coefficient of the rubber fender. Through the analysis proposed in this study, it is possible to determine the proper size and material properties of the rubber fender and the optimal moving conditions of barge.
The failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures, such as surface crack and peel-off failure in the contact zone, was investigated due to temperature shock(rainfall). To investigate this failure phenomenon, the surface tensile stress, and the shear stress, the vertical tensile stress in the contact zone were analysed using the non-linear stress-strain relationship of material such as strain-hardening- and strain-softening diagrams. Rainfall intensity, overlay thickness and overlay material were the main variables in the analyses. It is assumed that the initial temperature of overlaid concrete structures was heated up to 55$\^{C}$ by the solar heat. With a rain temperature 10$\^{C}$ and the rainfall intensity of nR=1/a, tR=10min, 60min, the stress states of overlaid concrete structures were calculated. The result shows that only fictitious cracks occurred in the overlay surface and no shear bond failure occurred in the contact zone. The vortical tensile stress increasing with overlay thickness was proved to be the cause of peel-off failure in the contact zone. The formulae for relationship between the vertical tensile stress and overlay thickness, material properties were derived. Using this formulae, it is possible to select proper material and overlay thickness to prevent failure in the contact zone due to temperature shock caused by rainfall.

Structural pavement analysis considering lateral loads of moving vehicle was carried out in order to simulate passing vehicle loads under various interface conditions. To verify of existing multi-layer elastic analysis of layer interface effect parameters, this study compared outputs by using ABAQUS, a three dimensional finite element program and KENLAYER, multi-layer elastic analysis as vertical load was applied to the surface of asphalt pavements. Pavement performance depending on interface conditions was quantitatively evaluated and fundamental study of layer interface effect parameters was performed in this study. As results of the study, if only vertical loads of moving vehicle is applied, subdivision of either fully bonded or fully unbonded is enough to indicate interface effect parameters. On the other hand, when lateral loads are applied with vertical loads, pavement behavior and performance are greatly changed with respect to layer interface conditions. The thinner thickness of the asphalt layer is and the smaller elastic moduli of the asphalt layer is, the more pavement behavior is influenced by interface conditions. In addition, regression analysis equation analytically computing tensile strain which was considered thicknesses and elastic moduli of the asphalt layer and layer interface effect parameters at the bottom of the asphalt layer was presented using database from numerical analyses on national pavement model sections.
