  • Distribution and habitat characteristics of Zostera (Zosteraceae) in the eastern coast of Korea were examined along with plant monohology, sediment composition and physicochemical factors of seawater from June 1998 to July 2000, The results showed that three species, Zostera marina, Z. asiatica and Z, caespitosa were found in specific habitats. The depth of habitat for Z. asiatica was deeper ($8.5{\~}15.0 m$) than that of Z. marina ($1.3{\~}5.6 m$) and Z. caespitosa ($3.2{\~}5.2 m$). Z. marina beds were observed at brackish-water, port and inner bay with the sediment type of sand or muddy sand. Habitats of Z. asiatica were restricted to the open bay with the sediment type of sand, Zostera have been described with regard to different growth forms of vegetation, flowering shoot and life history. Vegetation and flowering shoot length varied significantly with habitats; values ranged $66.8{\~}110.0 cm$ and $128.0{\~}217,8 cm$, respectively. Morphology of Z. marina varied with water depth and different substrates. Morphological characteristics of Z. asiatica showed a new phenotype at the deeper water depth. Vegetation and flowering shoots of Z. caespitosa were not significantly different between study sites (values ranged from 64.9 cm to 70.3 cm). Nutrient concentrations of seawater were higher at southern part than at middle part of the eastern coast of Korea. Distribution of Zostera in the eastern coast of Korea was dependent upon differences in water depth and habitat environments, by which affected the morphological differences were affected.

  • To serch the origin of the cold water mass along the east coast of Korea its characteristics are inrestigated based upon Cooperative Study of Kuroahio and Fisheries Research and Development Agency data. In the southwestern part of the Japan Sea the North Korean Cold Water sinks at the front and flows southwards on top of the Japan Sea Proper Water. it is found that the sunken North Korean Cold Water il high in the content of dissolved oxygen and less saline compared with the Japan Sea Proper Water. It is highly likely that the cold water mass off the Jugbyeon-Chuksan coast in summer il the North Koreah Cold Water and not upwelled Japan Sea Proper Water. It os shown that the Notth Korean cold Water Flows strongly in summer and its scuthern limit is generally off Chuksan-Janggigab and occasionally off Gampo as observed in 1973.

  • Large-scale earthquakes are occurring globally, especially in the South Asian crust, which is experiencing a state of tension in the aftermath of the 2011 East Japan Earthquake. Uncertainty and fear regarding the possibility of further seismic activity in the near future have been on the rise in the region. The National Disaster Management Research Institute has previously studied and analyzed the overflow characteristics of a tsunami and the rate of flood forecasting through tsunami numerical simulations of the East Sea of South Korea. However, there is currently a significant lack of research on the Southern Coast tsunamis compared to the East Coast. On the Southern Coast, the tidal difference is between 1~4 m, and the impact of the tides is hard to ignore. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the impact of the tide propagation characteristics on the tsunami. Occurrence regions that may cradle tsunamis that affect the southern coast region are the Ryukyu Island and Nankai Trough, which are active seafloor fault zones. The Southern Coast has not experienced direct damage from tsunamis before, but since the possibility is always present, further research is required to prepare precautionary measures in the face of a potential event. Therefore, this study numerically simulated a hypothetical tsunami scenario that could impact the southern coast of South Korea. In addition, the tidal wave propagation characteristics that emerge at the shore due to tide and tsunami interactions will be analyzed. This study will be used to prepare for tsunamis that might occur on the southern coast through tsunami hazard and risk analysis.

  • This study analyzes and compares the geomorphic characteristics and environmental changes of coastal plains such as the Anju and Hamheung Plains located in the west and east coasts of North Korea, respectively, based on topographic maps of the 1910s and satellite images of the 2000s. The Anju Plain, so called by as Yeoldusamcheonribeol, can be divided into alluvial plains, coastal plains and erosional plains. The Hamheung Plain can be regarded as alluvial plains formed by Seongcheon-river. Approximately 84.98$km^2$ tidal flats have been reclaimed to farmlands and saltpans, and the most channels of medium and small rivers have been straightened at the Anju Plain during the last one hundred years. At the Hamheung Plain, on the other hands, approximately 3.40$km^2$ land has been increased by the advances of coastal line of the Seongcheon-river delta with a maximum of 800m, and channels of Seoseongcheon-river which showed anastomosing channels have been disappeared by reclamation. Gwang-po has been decreased by artificial reclamations and river sedimentary processes.

  • During the last few decades, the ever-increasing knowledge of coastal morphogenic processes has made marine terraces the most recognizable, widespread and scientifically reliable records to determine both qualitatively and quantitatively the vertical movements that have affected the tectonically active coastal regions during the Quaternary. This study first aims to address the marine terrace records from Suje-ri to Suryum-ri along the coast of Gyeongju, SE Korea. Eight distinct flights of terraces, including HH YC, elevated up to 160 m above present sea level have been mapped along the coast of the study areas, and are designated $L_{II}$ to HH YC from the youngest to oldest. Based on the elevation of paleo-shoreline and inferred formation age for HH YC uplift rate since the middle Pleistocene has been estimated at 0.23 mm/year. Establishing the nature and timing of the uplift history derived from marine terraces provide a better understanding of neotectonic framework for explain enigmatic, complex landscape evolution in the Korean peninsula.

  • Although most species in genus Zostera inhabit shallow coastal areas and bays with weak wave energy, the Asian eelgrass, Zostera asiatica is distributed in deep water depth (8-15 m) unlike other seagrasses on the eastern coast of Korea. To examine factors limiting distribution Z. asiatica in relatively deep coastal areas, a transplantation experiment was conducted on October 2011, in which Z. asiatica shoots were transplanted from the reference site (donor meadow, ~9 m) to the shallow transplant site (~3 m). We compared shoot density, morphology, and productivity of Z. asiatica as well as environmental factors (underwater irradiance, water temperature, and nutrients) between the reference and transplant sites from October 2011 to September 2012. Shoot density and shoot height of transplants dramatically decreased within a few months after transplantation, but were similar with Z. asiatica in the reference site during spring. Shoot productivity were significantly higher in the transplant site than in reference site because of high light availability and nutrient concentrations. Transplants showed photoacclimatory responses such as higher rETRmax and Ek and lower photosynthetic efficiency in the transplant site than those in the reference site. Most of Z. asiatica transplant in the shallow transplant site disappeared in summer, which may be due to the high wave energy and physical damages induced by typhoons (TEMBIN and SANBA) in August and September 2012. According to the results of this study, Z. asiatica could not survive in shallow areas despite of more favorable light and nutrient conditions. Thus, Z. asiatica may restrictively occur in deep areas to avoid the intense physical stresses in the shallow area on the east coast of Korea.

  • This paper concerns the receding of the eastern coastline of Korean peninsula at a macroscopic point of view, the result is as following. 1. Eastern coast is gradually developed from maturity stage to full maturity stage. 2. The coastline recession due to sea level rise is amounted to the receding distance, x=0.045 m per yr. 3. The author proposes another classification from the new view point, which is classified by comparing quantities between river supplying sediment loads, and the littoral drifting due to wave actions. According this, eastern coast is receding(Type Q-A), and we could find it's geomorphological characteristics. 4. The general piofile of eastern coast sand beach is erosional storm profile(Type I) which accompany offshore bar. 5. From the wave measuring data of eastern coast(Hoopo port), I can derive the linear regression line of the exceedance probability of wave height from the log-normal distribution. $z=O. 113+4.335 log_lo H, r=0.983.$ Above equation made it possible to estimate $\omega[=P(H>H_c)]for the effective wave height H_c=2. Om4, 4. Om and their corresponding values are considerable (7.8%, 0.3%) 6. Eastern coastline certainly have the tendency of erosive and receding, owing to the sea level rise, poor sediment source and effective wave actions. It's very desirable to survey coastline evolution for a long time systematically, in order to make more elaborate diagnosis.

  • Using multi beam echo sounder, side scan sonar and scuba diving equipment, ceramic type, uneven type and semicircle-ramus type reefs into sandy bottom were ascertained, the depth of submersion in 7.2-10.3m on the coast of Gangneung, East of Korea, forty uneven type artificial reefs(AR) were totally buried into the sandy bottom. Two of five semicircle-ramus type ARs had only of their top area exposed. For most of the 45 ceramic reefs, only the upper 25-150cm of ARs were visible. The burial pattern is different in west and east side of the reefs, where the east side is deeply buried compared to the west side. From these results. it is recommended that sufficient analysis of bottom structure and materials especially in the sandy sea area should be undertaken in order to determine the best type of artificial reefs to be deployed and the best location for depoloyment.

  • In January the clo-values show two characteristic patterns on the insulation, Samjiyon has the highest clo-values while Changjon has the lowest in North Korea, and the coastal areas are lower than in the interior areas. This regional difference is a result of predominant temperature, wind speed and orographic effects. Particularly, in August the coastal areas are generally lower than the interior areas because of orographic effects(wind direction, wind speed). All regions except Samjiyon legions and northern interior regions have low values during the period from the early August to the middle of August. These are largely derived from the stable weather with the highest temperature, humidity and strong radiation by the North Pacific Anticyclone appears in Eastern Asia.

  • In order to secure the safety of coastal areas from the continuous storm surge in Korea, it is important to predict the wave movement and properties accurately during the storm event. To improve the accuracy of the storm simulation, and to quantify coastal risks from the storm event, the dependencies between wave height, wave period, and storm duration should be analyzed. In this study, therefore, copulas were used to develop multivariate statistical models of sea storms. A case study of the east coast of Korea was conducted, and the dependencies between wave height, wave period, water level, storm duration and storm interarrival time were investigated using Kendall's tau correlation coefficient. As a result of the study, only wave height, wave period, and storm duration appeared to be correlated.
