  • The purpose of this study is to figure out gifted elementary science students' improvement in performing open inquiry after peer review. In this study, gifted fifth-grade students performed open inquiry and review of each other as peers after the inquiry. Students' inquiries were evaluated and the influences of the feedback from the peer reviews were analyzed in relation to the inquiry performances. As a result of this study, three key points were discovered: First, the evaluation score increased with frequent feedback or long discussions. On the other hand, with less feedback, the evaluation score didn't rise. Second, there were three types of improvement in inquiry related to peer review: No. 1 was improvement after feedback given by themselves. No. 2 was reflection of feedback given to other groups. As a last type, No. 3 was that the students learned from other groups' presentation without any feedback and improved their inquiry. Third, there were five kinds of giving feedback; (1) feedback understanding the inquiry correctly, (2) insufficiency of peer's inquiry without deep thought. (3) on the usefulness of the inquiry, (4) on the scientific and logic validity through critical thinking, and (5) how to develop the inquiry. In these kinds of feedback, the fourth kind of feedback (4) occurred most frequently but the fifth (5) occurred rarely. It means peer review helps students develop their critical thinking ability and teachers should encourage students to give peers feedback of the fifth kind.

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of mathematical communication-centered teaching using peer feedbacks on students' mathematics achievement and mathematical dispositions toward mathematics, and then this study examined the characteristics of feedbacks used by students. To do this study, two sixth grade classes selected from an elementary school in Seoul participated in the current study; one class for a treatment group applying mathematical communication-centered teaching using peer feedback, and the other for a comparison group applying traditional teaching using teacher-centered communication. The results of this study showed the fact that a treatment group of mathematical communication-centered teaching applying peer feedback scored statistically higher than a comparison group applying teacher-centered communication with respect to both students' mathematical achievement and disposition. Especially, this communication-centered teaching program focused on peer feedback was more effective to middle or lower level students than higher level students. In addition, mathematical communication-centered teaching applying peer feedbacks helps students reflect their own thinking process about problem solving, and students experienced the improvement of their confidence about mathematics from opportunities to provide peers with feedbacks. Finally, the present study suggests the important role of communication in mathematics learning, particularly student-to-student feedbacks rather than teacher-to-students feedbacks. That is to say, students need to have many opportunities to represent their own mathematical thinking processes using mathematical language.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of pre-service secondary English teachers on peer feedback in English composition. For this purpose, a total of 37 students who took the English composition class for 15 weeks participated in the survey. After completing the survey, data were analyzed to find out the students' perception on peer feedback performed in their English composition class through frequency analysis and descriptive statistics. The findings of this study are as follows: First, the students showed positive attitudes towards on peer feedback activities. Second, the participants had received considerable help in the content, ideas and organization of their composition. Third, noticing that they all have made similar mistakes in their writing, the subjects were relieved to know that they are not falling behind their other colleagues. Fourth, the subjects did not trust the feedback contents among the peers, which were found in both the feedback giver and receiver. In particular, feedback from peers who had low English proficiency was rarely helpful. Fifth, the students were afraid that their relationship might become uncomfortable with peers when they pointed out peer's writing errors or made specific suggestions about their peer's writing. Finally, pedagogical implications were discussed based on the research findings.

  • This study was a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent pre-post test that verified the effect of formative feedback practice on practice satisfaction, learning motivation and academic self efficacy for nursing students. 37 were assigned to an intervention group and 41 to a control group. Formative feedback practice was applied to intervention group and peer review smartphone videos was applied to control group. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. There was no significant difference in learning motivation between the groups, but there were a significant difference in practice satisfaction(t=-2.79, p=.007) and academic self efficacy(t=2.30, p=.024) between the pre-post scores of the experimental group. This is meaningful in that it is more effective to provide formative feedback practice than to provide peer review smartphone videos. Therefore, it is necessary to consider formative feedback practice for the acquisition of core fundamental nursing skills of nursing students.

  • This study aims at investigating students' perceptions and peer feedback to practicum for teaching English in the English Department at a Korean university. The participants were forty-two students at an elective course, 'Method for teaching English', and the data comprised questionnaire, 12 teams of practicum, and 15 sets of PF. A 'Word Count System (WCS)' was adopted to analyze the data. The findings show that students regarded 'practicum' (52.4%) as more important than 'teacher's lectures' (42.8%), and most students (80%) applied more than 70% of lesson plans to their practicums. The practicum gave them experience of a teacher, development of confidence, recognition on their weaknesses and values of teaching. While the strengths shown in PF were mainly 'teaching methods and technique', 'use of multimedia', and 'teaching materials', the weaknesses were 'classroom interactions', 'teaching methods and techniques' and 'use of blackboard'. Overall praises were 1.8 times more than the matters which needed to be developed. The conclusion suggest that the students had their own insights toward teaching practices and how learners can be motivated.

  • The goal of this study was to investigate the differences in the effect of feedback from different providers on elementary school students' science achievement and to examine the responses of the students regarding the feedback. Three 6th grade classes were chosen to be assigned as experimental group 1, experimental group 2, and control group, respectively. In experimental group 1, the teacher provided feedback with students concerning the formative evaluations which were conducted periodically. Experimental group 2 was the one in which students were organized into small groups to compose and exchange feedback with one another. No feedback was of offered to students in the control group. The results of the science achievement test indicated ,that the provision of feedback by the teacher resulted in more gains in student academic achievement. The interviews with students revealed that the learners made positive responses to the feedback provided by the teacher while they showed negative attitudes toward the feedback exchange among students. There were also differences in student responses to feedback between high and low achievers in science. Implications for science lessons and science education research were presented and discussed.
