  • This study intends to investigate the everyday information behavior of Korean residents in Tokyo area. The discussion includes a comparative analysis on the differences between Korean residents in Tokyo and those in Osaka, with an emphasis on the relationships between demographic characteristics and information behaviors of the Two resident areas. Employing survey and interviews methods, it attempts to illustrate some features in their everyday information need and seeking pattern, and to scrutinize major factors influencing their information seeking behavior. In details, the discussion includes (1) the types and characteristics of their everyday concerns and agony (2) the attitudes and methods to meet with such concerns and agony, (3) the types and characteristics of information sources which they prefer to satisfy with their information needs, and finally, (4) the factors which have impacts on their information needs and seeking behavior.

  • The hydro-dynamical and ecological coupled model were applied in the Tokyo Bay, to evaluate the flow pattern including water quality parameters and the distribution of biomass flux, and to compare with the results obtained from the satellite data during March 2001. The flow pattern and salinity distribution obtained from the present model were nearly identical with those of the previous studies. SST from NOAA/AVHRR was $2.5^{\circ}C$ higher than model results in the mouth of bay and $0.5^{\circ}C$ lower than model results in the inner bay, respectively. It was found that the concentration of chlorophyll-a estimated from SeaWiFS was considerably higher than that of model result, regardless similar distribution pattern. This disagreement will be studied through the more elaborate investigation in the future.

  • Daehoon Ham's novel 'Cheongchunbo' features a studier as the main character who majored in Russian literature and admired the culture of the Soviet Union. From his viewpoint, the novel reproduces North Korean society before and after its independence from Japan. In this regard, it shows multilayered presence related to Russian culture and Soviet Russia. Such an aspect is based on the sense of sympathy that the main character has. The sense of sympathy is originated from the main character's admiration for the exoticism of Soviet culture which was forbidden during the late Japanese occupation. After Korea's independence from Japan, Russian was replaced by English. Such change also occurred in the main character's viewpoint. He underwent a change in his integrative viewpoint on Russian and Soviet under the name of Red Army. After defecting to South Korea, he began to put Russia down as a den possessed by the devil called 'communism.' In the meantime, Russia and Soviet have been separated from each other in ideological terms. The novel 'Cheongchunbo' stresses that the decisive cause of such changes is argued over trusteeship. The main character, fascinated by the presence of exotic Soviet, predicates that Soviet is a political symbol around the national division caused by the trusteeship. His change alluded to the life path of Korean authors who translated Russian literature after independence. During the Japanese occupation, Russian literature translated into Korea was a longing for forbiddance and admiration for Russia. However, the Russia presented in Daehoon Ham's novel before and after independence implies that the romantic translation has ended.

  • Optical properties of sea water were studied in the entrance of Tokyo Bay, Japan, based on the data obtained from six oceanographic stations in April, 1985. The observation of surface irradiance and underwater irradiance of sea water for eight kind of wavelengths (378, 422, 481, 513, 570, 621, 653, 677 nm) of sun light was conducted using the underwater irradiameter (Isigawa # SR-8). The mean attenuation coefficient of the sea water was appeared to be 0.300 (0.034-0.774) and the attenuation coefficient of the sea water for wavelength appeared such as 0.230 for 378 nm, 0.258 for 422 nm, 0.266 for 481 nm, 0.213 for 513 nm, 0.195 for 570 nm, 0.378 for 621 nm, 0.402 for 653 nm, 0.498 for 677 nm. The transparency was 7.2 m (6-9.5 m) and water color was 9 (6.5-10.5) in the study area and the sun's altitude 52.56$^{\circ}$(31.68-66.76$^{\circ}$). The relationship between attenuation coefficient (K) and transparency (D) was K=2.61/D (1.76/D-4.13/D). The rates of light penetration for eight kind of wavelengths (378, 422, 481, 513, 570, 621, 653, 677 nm) were computed with reference to the surface light intensity respectively. The mean rates of light penetration in proportion to depths were 69.30% (57.33-77.40%) in 1 m layer. 17.66% (6.3-27.90%) in 5 m layer, 4.47% (0.60-9.17%) in 10 m layer, and 0.77% (0.02-1.97%) in 20 m layer. The rates of light penetration at the transparency layer with reference to the surface light intensity was shown as 9.91% (0.51-22.99%).

  • In Korea, the use of world geodetic system(WGS) has been mandated in year 2010. Accordingly, the national geographic information institute(NGIS) provides the digital maps according to the WGS. Nevertheless, most of the digital geological maps are still based on the Tokyo Datum(TD). Therefore, users should conduct 2D/3D geological spatial analysis after converting the coordinates of digital geological maps to WGS. The conversion process is often tedious and troublesome for certain users. Therefore, in this study, the method to transform coordinate from TD to WGS using ArcToolbox is introduced for users not familiar with the process. For a better appreciation, the Chungju and Hwanggang-ri digital sheets of 1:50,000 scale was chosen as an example. Here, Chungju and Hwanggang-ri sheets were defined based on the TD-central origin and TD-east origin, respectively. The two sheets were merged after the transformation of TD-east origin of Hwanggang-ri to the TD-central origin, and eventually transformed to WGS-central origin. The merged map was found to match exactly with the digital map(Daeso 367041). The problem of coordinate determination in previous digital geological maps was solved effectively. The proposed method is believed to be helpful to 2D/3D geological spatial analysis of various geological thematic maps.
