  • Lucie Rie as an individual ceramist in terms of contemporary meaning was influenced by early 20th century's academic education and the ideology of modern formative arts. Modernity in her ceramic works has had a dramatic exert on numerous potters. Also, she is highly required to be studied in the history of modern pottery as a potter who took the initiative of studio pottery by the individual artistic handicraft. This paper considered an analysis of characteristics and techniques of 20C Modernistic ceramist Lucie Rie's works and activities. The body of this research investigated classification by chronicles and stylistic characteristics of her activity in the background of early 20th century European Modernism which influenced her formative arts. In addition, this article attempted to build up more specific comprehension on Lucie Rie's works and production process through an analysis of her techniques and artistic know-how..

The Effect of Ceramic Activities on Elderly Depression and Life Satisfaction (도예활동이 노인의 우울정서와 생활만족도에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of ceramic activities on elderly depression and life satisfaction. The research design was based on one group, with a pre and post-test study design. The subjects of this study included twelve elderly from anelderly daytime care center in Yang-san. Instruments used in this research were KGDS (Korea Form of Geriatric Depression Scale) developed by Jung et al., and a form of life satisfaction developed by Youn. A one-hour ceramic activity was offered to participants weekly, for five weeks. The results showed that depression and life satisfaction changed after the ceramic activities. The participants produced results of emotional aspects for demented old people. More specifically and significantly, positive emotions such as pleasure, in-terest, and tranquility were increased, while negative emotions such as anger or depression were significantly decreased through the ceramic activities. Thus, this study's ceramic activities program appeared to have beneficial effects on elderly depression and life satisfaction.

A Study on Korean Contemporary Crafts in 1970 Age (1970년대 한국현대공예의 동향 연구)

  • From the middle of 1970s were founded new basis for the development of craft through the co-operation of the civilians and the authorities. First, Korean Culture and Art Foundation founded in 1973 held the 'Invitation Exhibition for the Craft Artists All over the Country' in 1974 and 1975 and The National Museum of Modern Art held the 'Exhibition of Modern Korean Handicraft Art' in 1975. Second, the policy emphasizing the export and tourism provided the basis for the development of design for export goods and souvenirs of tour. H\therefore the exhibitions of such goods were held by many organizations. ] In 1970s departments of craft and design were newly established in the universities so that the third generation of Korean craft was on the rise and their groups began to hold exhibitions in commercial galleries. Reflecting on such circumstances, 1970s was the period of blossom for Korean craft while 1960s was a sprouting season.
