This paper aims to offer a conceptual framework in the context of culture-driven city branding through strategic design from a cross-disciplinary approach. The key findings identified the followings: Firstly, the phenomenon of culture-driven city brand creation and the use of design value of primary attractions. Secondly, the impact of the design contents of new media in supporting city brand creation. Lastly, the importance of image/text relationships through applying coding theory to enhance city brand communications.

1989년 9월5일 출판문화산업단지 건설추진위원회 발기인대회가 열린 이래 약 15년이 흐른 지금 총 47만4백평 규모의 파주출판도시 조성사업의 1단계 작업(26만4800평)이 막바지에 다다랐다. 이에 본지에서는 사업 입안에서부터 현재에 이르기까지 파주출판문화정보산업단지사업협동조합과 고락을 함께 하며 파주출판도시의 실질적인 설계자 역할을 해온 이기웅(도서출판 열화당 대표)이사장을 만나 지금까지의 소회와 파주출판도시의 비전에 대해 들어봤다.

Tokyo! is a 2008 French / Japanese / South Korean / German anthology film containing "Interior Design" by Michel Gondry, "Merde" by Leos Carax, and "Shaking Tokyo" by Joon-ho Bong, all of which were filmed in Tokyo. This cinematic triptych of three Tokyo-set stories is concerned with how the experience of self-alienation is related to urban life, that is, how to survive in a city as a self. The problem of life is the struggle for self-preservation. In Tokyo! the three film directors have shown that urban life is both self-deconstructing and self-preserving. In this paper, our purpose is to examine different modes of urban life by using two concepts reformulated by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida: the urban ipseity and auto-immunity. According to Derrida, ipseity is a system subjected to a circular structure. Such a system cannot avoid the general logic of auto-immunity; i.e., the structure of ipseity functions as both self-deconstructing and self-preserving. The three episodes contained in Tokyo! testify, each in its own way, to the function of that logic. In bringing to light the three modes of self: appropriation, dis-appropriation, and in-appropriation, we claim that the modality of urban life is confronted with the autoimmune reaction.

월간 <건축사>가 지난 2월 15일 김경민 서울대 환경대학원(도시계획) 교수를 만났다. 서울대 지리학과를 졸업한 김경민 교수는 UC버클리에서 정보통신 석사학위를 받고 실리콘밸리에서 소프트웨어 엔지니어로 근무했다. 이후 하버드대에서 박사 학위를 취득하고 보스턴 상업용 부동산 리서치회사 PPR(Property & Portfolio Research) 선임연구원으로 재직하는 등 다양한 분야의 지식과 경험을 갖추고, 현재 서울대 환경대학원 도시계획전공 교수로 부동산 트렌드와 건축과 공간의 동인이 될 만한 요소들을 분석·발표하며 방송 출연, 도서 집필, 인터뷰 등을 통해 다양한 매체에서 활발히 활동하고 있다. 김경민 교수는 본지와의 인터뷰에서 도시의 장소성·역사성을 이어나가면서 도시의 미래를 구현할 수 있는 새로운 거버넌스 체계의 구축, 도시개발의 비전을 제시할 공공 디벨로퍼와 도시개발청의 필요성을 언급하고, 도시·건축의 변화를 위한 네거티브 시스템 도입을 제안했다. 또 단순히 설계뿐 아니라 인문·역사적 이해를 바탕으로 금융 분야에서도 전문성을 갖춘 도시계획 플랜을 세우는 게 중요하다고 설명했다.

미국에서는 1998년 워싱턴주 시애틀에서 '만약 시애틀 전체 시민이 같은 책을 읽는다면 (if All of Seattle Read the Same Book)${\cdots}$'이라는 프로젝트로 시작한 '한 도시, 한 책' 운동이 2001년 일리노이주 시카고에서 '한 책, 한 시카고(One Book, One Chicago)'로 본격화되었다. 국내에서는 2003년 충남 서산에서의 '한 책' 시범 운영 후 김해와 순천, 부산, 청주, 대전, 용인, 부천 등 여러 도시에서 '같이 또 다르게' 진행되고 있다. 김해에서도 2007년 '책 읽는 도시-김해'를 선포하면서 시작한 "김해의 책"이 올해로 5년째를 맞는다. 그간의 활동을 정리하며 "김해의 책"이 갖는 비전과 사회적 책읽기로서의 가능성에 대해 전망해 본다.
