  • People collectively understand and often use information and knowledge as terms in a variety of contexts without concern nor discussion of their many competing conceptual and theoretical definitions. The concepts of information and knowledge are intrinsically linked and suffer some of the same problems when scholars try to define them, especially when truth is a prerequisite. This theory paper presents a simple thought experiment that relates the reliabilist and truth-tracking analyses of knowledge with the physical and cognitive paradigms of information, respectively. The results of the thought experiment are discussed within the context of the Post-Truth era, with implications and applications for information literacy.

  • This study suggests the method of converting thesauri to SKOS step by step and it is formalized in three stages of the conversion process. The study develops output and guidelines for each stage. The converting stages are: (1) Collecting and analyzing thesauri for understanding about structure of terms and semantics of relation. (2) Defining the conversion method and creating ontology of the thesauri. (3) Examining the preservation of forms and various semantic relations between the thesauri and then creating SKOS ontology. This method can be applied to the thesauruses with complicated relations in concepts. In the future, it is needed to have an embodiment of conversion after making the algorithm of conversion by stage with the method suggested in this research.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the structure and pattern of conclusions chapters in research articles selected in four representative journals published in Korean LIS. To analyse the structure and pattern five categories and eleven elements drawn from RA conclusions were used such as 'Drawing Attention', 'Summarizing', 'Discussing', 'Applying' and 'Extending'. The Findings are as follows. 'Conclusions' was the most used title of the chapter, and then 'conclusions and suggestions'. The conclusions sections were consisted averagely 4.2 elements. 'Summary of findings' was the most frequently elements, followed by 'summary of research process', 'suggestion of further research' and 'implication'. Also, 'summary of findings' was the most used in lengths. 'Summarizing' was the highest frequency in five categories, followed by 'Extending', and 'Applying'. The dominant first element begun conclusions sections was 'summary of findings' and the final element closed conclusion was 'suggestion of further research'. 'Summary of research process - summary of findings' order was found in the most frequent pattern of conclusions. 'Summary of findings' and 'summary of research processes' in 'Summarizing' were found as essential functions, while other elements, such as significance, 'application', 'limitations' in 'Applying' and 'Extending' were found as optional functions in the conclusions of Korean LIS research articles.

  • The digital copying and digital transmission are rapidily Increasing with the innovation of information technology and the development of networking technology. But It Is Inevitable to limit copyright for the public benefit and cultural development In the digital environment in like manner with the analog environment. First, this study examinated the international trends and legulations relating to the copyright limitations In the U.S. and Japan for the fair use. Second, it dealed with the problems of the digital copying relating to the temporary storage In RAM and screen display that are recently becoming international issues. Third, it concretely explored and analyzed the problems according to the application of the fall use of the private copying, the library copying, and the copying for the purpose of school education in the network environment. In conclusion, to solve these problems that Is occurred from legulations In the analog environment Is needed the revision of the existing copyright law in Korea. Finally, this study suggested 'the copyright collecive management system' and 'the private copying levy system' as the systemic devices to control the digital private copying.

  • The purpose of this study is investigate to compare with knowledge classification and library classification system of botany. First, the knowledge field of botany is mainly classified in morphology, physiology, ecology, taxonomy, genetics, evolution and others by the study object of plants. Second, the division of plants is treated in the field of taxonomy, that is, a lower subdivision study of botany, and Engler's classification is still prevalent in the taxonomy. Third, in library classification, KDC, NDC, UDC and CC adopted the Engler's classification, but DDC and LCC was taken of the Bentham & Hooker's classification. In the Engler's classification, plants are arranged by evolution's order, from lower vegetation to higher vegetation, but Bentham & Hooker's classification is arranged in the reverse order. Forth, it is desirable that every plants(482-489) of KDC' botany are subdivided by the attribute or structure of plants being treated in the general botany as if they are subdivided in the DDC or CC.

  • Information Feature Visualization integrates the traditional information retrieval techniques and visualization techniques and reduces the time and effort from searching for requested information by promoting apprehension from the wide and various internet information. It's used to understand the related information tendency by supporting the statistic materials for retrieved results. It's useful to catch a tendency regarding information over the search process. Recently, by increasing interest in the information visualization in the library system, The research about various visualization technology and searching system has been developed by many researchers. So, to describe systematically and visually the feature of information, we'll make the element of information visualization uniform by various views and suggest paradigm renewing retrieval technology using information outlining techniques by developing search tool to improve apprehension about information and navigate more easily among information. We can improve user's apprehension about search information and search more usefully.

  • This study aims to develop metadata elements and vocabularies of 'Chosunsibo' issued in Korea during the Japanese colonial era. Despite the vast amount and historical values, newspaper articles in Chosunsibo are still unsearchable and difficult to access. To the end, this study includes as follows: (1) analyzed the DB construction and metadata elements of newspapers issued in Korea during the Japanese colonial, (2) investigated the morphological characteristics and content of 'Chosunsibo', and (3) derived metadata elements, encoding schemes and controlled vocabularies for 'Chosunsibo'. The final draft was verified in three methods: (1) review and revise through data input tests, (2) consulting by a DB expert agency, and (3) drawing up of crosswalks with metadata standards and related cases. The scope of this study is to design the metadata schema of the historical newspaper 'Chosunsibo' and develop a data input system based on that schema.

  • In our knowledge-based society, a corporation's main growth engine consists of its unique core competences and how these are organized rather than materialized competitive advantage. Intangible factors such as creative organizational culture, learning capability, brands, marketing ability and technology are notable examples of such core competencies. To ensure constant development of a corporation, it is important to understand the environment in which these factors operate. Drawing on literature research, this paper looks at organizational culture and change, and employees' attitudes and resistance factors to such change. To strengthen the explanation of this study the Korea Asset Management Corporation was used as a case study. From the point of view of information science, knowledge has been viewed as that which is found in books and databases. Such "knowledge" is storable, passive and unchangeable. However, more recently it is seen by many researchers that this approach is limited in that it ignores the knowledge that "sits" in human "bodyminds" and organizations. Such knowledge forms the backbone of organizational culture and should be considered in any meaningful study of information.

  • The core version of UDC(Universal Decimal Classification) is available in an electronic form called MRF(Master Reference File) which supports the maintenance of the quality of the scheme as a working tool for the UDCC(UDC Consortium) by annual reviewing its content and initiating revisions and extensions. In this paper, we discuss outcomes of our in-depth analysis of the geography, biography and history disciplines in UDC focused on the its evolutions and characteristics, including the common auxiliaries of place, the common auxiliaries of time and the common auxiliaries of race, ethnic grouping and nationality. Based on the in-depth analysis, we suggested some ideas which can be applied into the history class of KDC(Korean Decimal Classification). In particular, its principle of combination methods in the history of individual regions, the way of its assignment of physical geography and human geography in the same division, the possibilities of the extension of the table of geographical division and the adaptation of the table of chronological division in KDC.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the association among the subject areas of big data research papers. The subject group of the units of analysis was extracted by applying co-citation networks, and the rules of association were analyzed using Apriori algorithm of R program, and visualized using the arulesViz package of R program. As a result of the study, 22 subject areas were extracted and these subjects were divided into three clusters. As a result of analyzing the association type of the subject, it was classified into 'professional type', 'general type', 'expanded type' depending on the complexity of association. The professional type included library and information science and journalism. The general type included politics & diplomacy, trade, and tourism. The expanded types included other humanities, general social sciences, and general tourism. This association networks show a tendency to cite other subject areas that are relevant when citing a subject field, and the library should consider services that use the association for academic information services.
