  • In the Fourth Industrial Revolution, students are required to develop in areas such as communication, logic, and creative thinking. Therefore, the university libraries need to develop new services so that students can grow up to be suitable for the new social situations. Havruta is an educational approach that can meet these needs and is one of the measures the university libraries want to apply. Thus, through 1) the investigation of the concept of Havruta, 2) the case study of domestic and foreign university libraries, and 3) interview of the Havtura-based service, this study 4) proposed the Havruta service applicable to the university libraries and 5) conducted a survey of operators and users on the awareness of the Havruta service, space, and contents of the Havruta service, and the willingness of the Havruta service. Results of the survey analysis revealed implications for the areas of the Havruta service - Havruta theme, group organization, textbook rental, simplication of space reservation, data sharing and motivation system.

  • The roles and services of a library have historically been influenced and developed by the change of information technologies. The ubiquitous technologies have been widely studied for medical area, construction, commerce, broadcasting, telecommunication and so on. The ubiquitous technologies have extended to the roles and services in a library. The development of ubiquitous IT, the roles and functions of a library and information center should be changed. To adjust evolving environment, this study focuses on concept and definition of ubiquitous computing and networks. Especially, with requirements and essential technologies which can be a technological infrastructure for ubiquitous life, library services and roles in ubiquitous life are discussed by literature review, case analysis and expert interview. With the results, this study proposes that library services and roles in ubiquitous life should be considered in two ways which are network and physical spaces. Also, roles of a library in ubiquitous life will be extended to culture and education center including traditional information center. To perform those roles and services, a library should develop various service programs relating culture and education such as personalized service and educational program.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of school library services using the RGT (repertory grid technique), and to examine whether there are differences in the perceptions and internal experiences of school library services between human resources (librarian teachers, subject teachers, and librarians). I used indicators such as element intensity, construct extremity, discrepant constructs, and implicative dilemmas to analyze the characteristics of school library services. The elements of the repertory grid were set to 9, and 14 constructs were set through focus group interviews with 3 librarian-teachers. The GRIDCOR 6.0, which can be accessed online, was used to complete the repertory grid for 30 graduate students of the College of Education, and 6 of them were selected and analyzed, considering the demographic characteristics. From the perspective of element intensity, it was found that the following school library services are important and influential: resource management, teacher-librarian collaboration, and reading and information counseling services. The clarity of one's role, the actual performance, and self-regulatory ability were ranked high from the perspective of constructs intensity.

  • A status analysis and focus group interviews with librarians, school librarians and experts were conducted to find a new direction for revitalization of 19 public libraries affiliated to the Chungcheongnam-do Office of Education in the context of the advent of a new educational environment following the 4th industrial revolution. Through the research method, the knowledge experience edu library through the library community school was set as the vision of a public library belonging to the Chungnam Office of Education. The direction of public library service as an edu-library was divided into specialization as an educational library, life cycle customized service, knowledge experience-oriented service, and 4th industrial revolution intelligent information society service. Based on the traditional functions of the library, the space that the future public library should have was presented as an experiential learning space. In this study, a specialized direction for strengthening the educational function of libraries belonging to the Chungnam Office of Education was presented, which will contribute to finding ways to cooperate with schools and school libraries, and will provide a basis for preparing directions for libraries belonging to other regional offices of education.

  • Recently, the emphasis on self-directed learning and lifelong education is increasing the importance of school libraries in the curriculum. Accordingly, various studies have been conducted mainly from a structural, institutional and operational point of view. However, more research is necessary on the micro topics such as school library users' autonomous intrinsic motivations in the sense that school libraries play key roles in autonomy-based self-directed education. This study aims at finding out what types of school library use motivations are more important and the degree to which the use motivations affect the school library service quality based on the self-determination theory. In addition, this study examines how the use motivations and the perceived service quality vary depending on the school grade of the library users. Based on a focus-group-interview pilot study, a questionnaire survey was administered on the effects of school library motivations on perceived library service quality to 588 students from 5 high schools and 2 middle schools in Seoul. When the service quality and its components, service affect, information control, and library as place were set as dependent variables, in all these four cases, intrinsic motivations were more significant than extrinsic motivations. In addition, when middle school students and high school students were selected as separate analysis target groups, the results of both analyses show that the higher the intrinsic motivations were, the higher the perceived service quality was. The contribution of this study is that it applies the self-determination theory to school library service, measures the influence of motivation type based on the theoretical basis, and focuses on micro aspects to improve school library services.

  • Recently, public libraries have increased in quantity, while various problems have arisen regarding the operation of public libraries, such as lack of librarian manpower and facilities. Additionally, an increase in the number of public libraries does not correlate to an increase in the utilization of public libraries, and thus developing various services is needed to maintain the continued use of public libraries. This study examined which types of use motivations affect the intention of knowledge exchange in public libraries when using public libraries based on the self-determination theory. It also looked at how the use motivations and the intention of knowledge exchange vary depending on the frequency of public library use. According to an online survey of 230 users of public libraries, extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, autonomy, competence, and relatedness as independent variables had a positive impact on the level of knowledge exchange. In addition, the higher the frequency of public library use, the higher the needs for autonomy and relatedness were. Based on the results, it was suggested that the knowledge exchange needs to be established as a new service of public libraries by offsetting extrinsic motivation that emerged from by negative influences and promoting intrinsic motivation, autonomy and competence.

  • This study tends to apprehend how much public library contributes to a role of upbuilder of digital integrated local society through a survey. For this, I performed the survey on 935 organization of public library in the whole country registered in national library statistical system. As a result, firstly, it's apprehended that equipment infra, Internet infra, etc like computer, laptop, scanner, tablet PC, etc are in relatively high level. Secondly, service or resource like electronic book, digital and virtual reference service, library service mobile App, etc that users can use are in relatively high level but software supporting cooperation and group task, fusibility of participating space, etc are shown very low level. Thirdly, the rate of literacy training relating to technology were only 22.4%, education subject focused on resource searching subject and somewhat future-oriented technical education like directions of video conference technique, cloud computing application education, etc wasn't conducted. Finally, we should consider expansion of providing technology and equipment and provision of future-oriented service and education according to a flow of the time that needs to seek change in various roles of library as enjoying culture space or creative space.

  • The purpose of this research is to explore young adults (YA)' perceptions, use, and needs of public libraries, as well as to find out how to make effective YA sections within public libraries. Two public libraries with separate YA sections were selected and a total of 126 YA users participated in the survey. The survey showed 86.5% of participants used the YA section and the main reasons for use were reading for leisure, study area use, and seeking information for school assignments. 64.8% of participants agreed that separate YA sections are needed at public libraries. The areas most in need of improvement were expansion of seats of YA section, lack of digital devices, and expansion of group study and meeting spaces. This research highlights for space composition policy as YA's needs, creating a balanced environment for physical facilities, and YA oriented service. As well, a need for improved opening hours, and expansion of multi-use spaces for seats of the YA section.
