Recommendations on the Public Library Services for Older Adults (공공도서관 노인 서비스를 위한 제언)

  • The purpose of this study is to recommend on the public library service for older adults through the analysis of the perceptions of older adults and librarians. To achieve the study purpose, interview method was employed. The interview questions are composed based on the ALA guidelines. According to the study results, the following ten factors were recommended by older adults: 1) various customized life long learning programs for older adults, 2) highly qualified staff for the public library life long learning programs and regular evaluation for the staff, 3) provision of various and new information resources, 4) promotion of public library services and programs, 5) public library staff's kindness and professionalism, 6) regular reeducation of the public library staff, 7) library user education, 8) customized resources, facilities, and equipments for older adults, 9) provision of the library space, and 10) customized library services for older adults. In addition, the following four factors were mentioned by librarians: 1) customized services and programs for older adults, 2) customized collection, facilities, and equipments, 3) adequate budget for public library service for older adults, 4) professionals for the public library service for older adults. The followings were recommended by both the older adults and librarians: 1) Customized library services, programs, collection, equipments, facilities for older adults, 2) Professionals for the public library service for older adults and Regular reeducation for them.

  • As the social environment changes, the public library's services for older persons need to be improved from a new perspective. Therefore, this study analyzed the relationships among user satisfaction of major services, overall service satisfaction, service quality components (i.e., service affection, information control, and library as place), and re-use intention according to demographic characteristics by evaluating the public library's services for older persons with applying LibQUAL+ and surveying the user satisfaction. This study proposed to provide appropriate information and service according to the changes of the elderly user environment, develop the library collection according to the diversified information needs by older users, and allocate personnel who could offer a service to older people.

A Study on the Current State and Improvements of the Public Library Services for Older Adult in Korea (우리나라 공공도서관 노인서비스 현황과 개선방안에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted with the aim of identifying the current state and improvements of the public library services for older adult in Korea. According to the online survey of public libraries in urban areas across the country, a total of 172 libraries responded. Research shows that public libraries generally recognize the importance of elderly users, but there are limitations in active efforts. The priority area for library collection and space/facilities was to be strengthened by the expansion of large type and voice books/periodical books, as well as the need to ask librarians for help to find books in high bookshelves. In the case of library services/programs, the areas that need to be strengthened first were analyzed as social participation programs and humanities programs. The librarians in charge of information services expressed their opinions that more specialized services and programs should be planned and subdivided for the elderly generation in order to provide older adults' services unique to other older adults' service institutions.

A Study of the Spatial Composition Strategy for Older Adults in the Public Library (공공도서관 노인서비스 공간 구성방안에 대한 연구)

  • This study attempted to find ways to recognize public libraries as social institutions with spatial functions to integrate generations for older adults in the face of Korea's entry into a super-aged society. In particular, the goal of this study is to find out the implications and strategies for the design of libraries and facilities for older adults. And to this end, major guidelines related to senior citizens' service spaces and facilities were analyzed to derive implications for senior citizens' services. In addition, an in-depth interview survey was conducted on elderly users with experience in using library services to identify the priorities of creating spaces and facilities for the elderly. As a result, "Open elderly service space" and "Integrated elderly service space" were proposed as a way to organize the elderly service space in public libraries.

The Study on the Policies far Public Library Services to Older Persons (공공 도서관의 노인 서비스 정책에 관한 연구)

  • UN has decided to observe the year 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons (IYOP). Since that year, older persons should have equal access to information in order to function effectively in an information society for all. Public library should be a important access point for older persons, and above all, be a leading ole to bridge digital devide in the regional community. There are, however, few policies or guidelines for public library services to older persons in Korea. This is a time fur developing these ones at the national level. In this study, the draft for public library services to older persons is suggested.

A Study on the Establishment and Management of a Library for Older Adults (노인도서관 설립과 운영에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a plan to establishment and management for a library for old adults. Therefore, the library for old adults defined to the concept of providing a specialized service by providing the necessary material with an elderly user over 65 focus. And presenting the basic direction and specific direction, organizational plan, and ordinance on establishment and management of a library for older adults. In addition, after conducting a semi-structured interview based on a pre-prepared questionnaire targeting 30 elderly people aged 65 or older who had experiences using public libraries, the results were analyzed, and 20 responses indicated that the purpose of using the library was a way to participate in the program as an essential service for the elderly. 12 respondents stated that the purpose of using the library was possibly a necessity for such things as writing autobiographies and reflections of historical events. Lastly, investigating the operational cases of two public libraries that already utilize elderly learning and health information rooms, it was concluded that the operation of the elderly library also needs to reflect the regional differences and characteristics unique to older adults.

A Study on the Development of Internet-based Information Services for the Older Adults (노인들을 위한 인터넷기반 정보서비스 구축에 관한 연구)

  • Information service for the aged is a new challenge for public libraries in Korea. To develop an internet-based information service at public library perspectives, information sources, information need, and information seeking and using behavior are investigated. Interview survey is performed to 1060 adults aged 60 and over. Finding revealed that the respondents led to few channels to information except for mass media and informal oral communication. It ascertain ways in which 23% of the respondents currently use internet, and identify barriers of nonusers. The information need of the elderly are diverse, but health/medicine, news, hobbies, religion, leisure/travel are most identified need in descending order. Based on data analysis and previous research results, a cooperative service model consisting of information contents, online reference, interface design, and education is developed. Finally problems and suggestions for future improvement are discussed.

A Study on Considerations of the Library Policy Establishment to Resolve Digital Divide of Older Adults (노인의 정보격차 해소를 위한 도서관 정책수립의 고려사항)

  • As our society enters an aged society, it is becoming increasingly important to resolve digital divide of older adults. However, the digital divide of the older adults are generally neglected compared to other information poor. The aim of this study is to propose considerations for library policy development in order to resolve the digital divide of the older adults. The study examined regulation of the Framework Act on National Informatization and the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Employment and Labor. Also it investigated guidelines and current status of services to older adults in the library. The study suggested that public libraries should be used as a basic base for the services to resolve the digital divide to older adults across the country, and the services should be organized systematically and sustainably through public libraries.
