  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between height of cutting and filling as well as the height of slope of roadsides. It also suggests the rational height of slope to minimize topographical damage in road construction. Hence, in this study, 44 cases of expert's opinions related to height of slope in Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) for road construction projects are reviewed, and 23 cases of data related to height of cutting and filling in EIA for road construction projects are used for analyzing relationship between height of slopes and height of cutting or filling of roadside. The results are as follows; Most of heights of cutting, filling and slope in EIA for road construction are over the required standards 20 or 30m(in case of cutting) and 10 or 15m(in case of filling). It also shows that there is high-level correlation between height of cutting and filling and height of slope of roadside. According to regression analysis, it is suggested that the general standard of each heights of cutting and filling are 25.33~33.23m(in case of cutting) and 14.56~18.08m(in case of filling), but it should be considered in EIA review for road construction projects that these heights suggested in this study are over the required standards.

  • Large landslides have occurred more than 100 times each year by the influence of cyclones and torrential rain each year in Vietnam. Nevertheless, they $don^{\circ}$Øt have a scientific management system to prevent the landslide disaster in advance. In this study, we acquisited the risk factor and damage factor about each slope throughout basic survey at Hoang Sa Costal Road, Danang and at Ho Chi Minh Road, Quangnam. The priority of investigation technique considering of the exposure characteristics of the road slope in Vietnam developed by the empirical analysis with the acquired data. As a result, we can set the foundation of scientific management for the road slope management system in Vietnam.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest objective basic data for the design and management of the national park roadside slopes through the quantitative analysis of the visual quality included in the physical environment of the Chi-ri national park, for this, visual volumes of physical elements have been evaluated by using the mesh analysis, spatial images structure of physical elements have been analyzed by factor analysis algorithm, and degree of visual quality have been measured mainly by questionnaires. Result of this thesis can be summarized as fallows. Visual volumes of the naked, rock, ground cover of seed spray, and artificial planting are found to be the main factor determining the visual quality. Factors covering the spatial image of the national park roadside slopes landscape have been found to be the overall synthetic evaluation, spatial, appeal, physical, openness and dignity factors such as the overall the spatial, physical and openness yield high factor scores. As for the factors determining the degree of visual quality of the roadside slopes, variables such as the summit, the constructions management, harmony of landscape, visual stability of roadside slopes, suitable artificial planting and suitable constructions.

  • Prevention plans for landslide and slope disasters should be appropriate for a country's budget when considering a systematic investment plan. The systematic management of slopes adjacent to national highways should incorporate reasonable investment risk and the expected degree of damage should be calculated by considering the investment priorities. In terms of priority of investment, the major factors used to determine the degree of hazard are gradient, soil characteristics, RMR (Rock Mass Rating), stability interpretation, type of discontinuities, and history of collapse, among others. The likely consequences of slope failure can be determined by considering traffic volume, the number of lanes, and average vehicle risk. We performed such calculations regarding the priority of investment and performed a regression analysis for 392 slopes located in Yeongseo region, Gangwon province. The calculation results show that collapsed slopes have a higher priority for investment, as do slopes with a high proportion of dangerous sections and locations in valleys.

  • A standard slope stability analysis was undertaken for new railway sections, based on the slope of sedimentary rock layers and filling material (sand), to evaluate the stability of the cut-off slope in the section passing through a zone of sedimentary rock. The stability analysis was undertaken during the dry and rainy seasons, accounting for earthquake occurrence, based on slope design criteria. It was found that if the slope of the sedimentary rock formation was <10°, the effect on the safety rate of the cut-off slope was insignificant. Furthermore, a slope relief of 1:1.0 or more should be applied with slopes of 10~20°, and 1:1.2 or more with >20°. This study provides an important reference for evaluation of slope stability when railway and road construction is undertaken in areas of sedimentary rock.

  • On September 2007, numerous slopes at Jeonranam-Do collapsed as a result of rainfall related to Typhoon Nari. Failure occurred at a road cut-slope on the ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ detour road, damaging transport infrastructure. This study aims to determine the cause of failure based on field investigations, the geotechnical properties of soil, clay mineral composition, and quantitative analysis. The studied cut slope consists of weathered soil that originated from volcanic rocks, and minor faults and a mafic dyke. Surface water tends to seep into the soil because the roadway is not sealed and because of poorly installed drainage. Sieve and XRD analyses indicate that soils in the failure zone are ML and CH, which are prone to swelling due to the presence of clay minerals such as smectite and vermiculite. The slope failed due to the improper construction of drainage facilities, the presence of geological weak zones, and high soil contents of swelling clay.

  • The slope stability method using the soil stabilizer is a way to ensure that the slope stability from reinforcing method is environmentally friendly. However, the reinforcing method does not ensure slope stability for lack of research on the reinforcement effect of the mixture with soil. So the application of this method implies difficult technical issues. In this research, reinforcement effect is investigated according to the different ratio of mixture. And the optimum reinforcement depth is proposed according to the height of slope from numerical analysis. The results show that approximately the soil strength increases from two to three times. From numerical analysis, it is possible to estimate the optimum height according to the height of slope. It is anticipated that the use of soil stabilizer will increase the slope stability.

  • To develope the fundamental models suitable for slope stabilization and scenic effect improvement of the roadside slopes, this study has continuously been conducted for last about 10 years through the field survey and observations on the roadside slopes of 100 plots located in the Capital region. The results obtained could be summarized as follows: 1) In general, due to unsuitable treatments and constructions to the man-made bare slope characteristics of the roadsides, the treatment aims for stabilizing and improving the scenic beauty of the slopes have not been successfully reached in the surveyed regions. 2) Particularly, because of insufficiency of the follow-up maintenance techniques to the roadside slopes treated, denudations of slope scenery established as well as the withering of the vegetation planted have been accelerated for the most part of the slopes treated. 3) 6 fundamental models for the roadside slope treatments have been developed and could be edaptable to the nation-wide purposes. The fundamental models are the model of forest scenery match plantation, roadside scenery establishment, denuded land rehabilitation, rock slope greenification, absolute stabilization, and environmental plantation belt establishment, respectively.
