Development of the Expected Safety Performance Models for Rural Highway Segments (지방부 국도의 사고예측모형 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The past researches on roadway segment safety estimation focused on intersections, which are the primary traffic accident regions. The past researches on roadway segments, However, analyzed the effects of certain factors on the traffic accident occurrence rate by organizing the individual geometric structures of the roads, and there is still a dearth of researches on the development of a traffic accident estimation model for rural roadway segments. Therefore, this research focused on rural two-lane and multilane roadway segments and developed traffic accident estimation models through the application of statistical techniques. This is required to explain such high frequency of zero counts in the traffic accident data. In this research, it was found that the Hurdle model is more suitable than the Poisson or negative binomial-regression model for explaining the excess zeros case. In addition, main variables were chosen to estimate their effects on traffic accident occurrence at rural roadway segments, and the safety at such rural roadway segments was estimated. In this research, it was assumed that there are different factors that affect the safety at two-way lane and multilane roadway segments, and a traffic accident estimation model was developed by dividing the two-way lane and multilane roadway segments.

  • 건설산업은 국가발전의 초기 단계에서 유통망의 확보 및 제조시설의 확보과정에서 대단히 중요한 역할을 담당한다. 현재 우리나라는 국가 도로망의 정비가 일정수준이상 진행된 상태이며, 제조시설 역시 IMF이후 시설 투자가 감소하면서 건설경기가 침체되어 있는 것이 사실이다. 따라서 대규모의 건설현장은 감소하고 소규모의 도로망 확장공사 및 공동주택 재개발등이 건설경기의 맥을 겨우 잇고 있는 것이 현실이다. 건설경기의 침체와 더불어 안전시설 투자와 안전관리의 공동화현상이 빚어지고 있으며 이로 인해 안전사고가 급증하고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 안전시설투자에 대한 부담을 줄이고 안전교육의 효율을 극대화함으로써 안전사고를 예방할 수 있는 방법을 연구 하고자 한다.(중략)

A Meta Analysis of the Effects of Road Safety Facilities on Accident Reduction: Focusing on Signalized Intersection (도로안전시설의 사고감소효과 메타분석 : 신호교차로를 대상으로)

  • The number of traffic accidents at intersections has been increased over the past decade, and in 2014, accounted for 44% of the total traffic accidents. In addition, since most of road accident black spots include signalized intersections, the improvement of safety on signalized intersection is top priority for national road safety program in Korea. For the decision of most effective action plan for the safety of signalized intersection, this study conducted meta-analyses to assess the effects of various road safety facilities at signalized intersection on traffic accidents. We selected 19 articles regarding the prediction of traffic accidents at signalized intersection and calculated 34 individual effect sizes on 8 variables included in the articles. The results found that there was a statistically significant negative relationship between the occurrence of traffic accident and the presence of all of road safety facilities except an exclusive left turn bay. It shows that most of the road safety facilities could prevent traffic accidents, and intersection channelization has the most effective on the reduction of traffic accidents followed by left-turn acceleration lane, lightning, crosswalk, exclusive right-turn lane and median barrier.

A Study on Comparison of Road Surface Images to Provide Information on Specific Road Conditions (도로 상태 정보 안내를 위한 도로표면 영상 비교에 관한 연구)

  • On rainy days, water films form on wet road surfaces and reduce the braking force of vehicles, which often ends up in accidents. For safe driving, the road information signage provides information on road and weather conditions warning drivers of wet road conditions. Still, current information on road conditions is neither localized nor detailed but universal. The present study used the images on CCTVs installed on roads to compare the images of road surfaces in an attempt to suggest a mechanism determining factors that hamper safe driving based on the images. In the image comparison, a normal road image taken on a sunny day is used as an original image, against which road conditions occurring on rainy days are categorized and determined on a case-by-case basis to provide drivers with early warning for the sake of safe driving.

Improvement of Flexural Structural Performance and Applied Section Shape for Sound Proof Wall Structures Using Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer(GFRP) (GFRP를 활용한 도로 방음벽 구조물의 구조성능 및 단면형상 개선에 관한 연구)

  • This research presents the structural performance and an improving technique for flexural capacity of road safety facilities based on the damage cases by wind pressure. Among road safety facilities, a support frame of soundproofing walls is considered as a prototype structure and its corresponding structural behaviors and section design are performed mainly by analytical and experimental studies. On the basis of analytical results, glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) with an epoxy matrix which is high stiffness-to-weight ratio was used for applied one of strengthening techniques and their results shows that support frame strengthened by GFRP is the most effective compared to other cases proposed in this research for advancing its flexural improvement, Finally, optimum section design was performed analytically to evaluate wind-resistance capacity and its result would be very useful for developing a practical design guideline for Road safety facilities under strong wind.

A Study on the Improvement Plan of Speed Limit and Road Service Quality according to the Implementation of Safety Speed 5030 Policy (안전속도 5030 시행에 따른 제한속도 및 도로서비스 질의 개선방안에 관한 연구)

  • The safety speed 5030 policy, which is currently being implemented nationwide, tends to increase citizens' dissatisfaction due to reduced mobility and inconvenience. In order to successfully promote the Safety Speed 5030 policy, it is important to collect various opinions of citizens who use roads by deviating from quantitative policy evaluation criteria such as traffic accidents and traffic speed. Therefore, in this study, citizens who use roads were classified into a driver group and a non-driver group, and civic consciousness analysis such as adequacy evaluation of speed limit, satisfaction evaluation of road service quality (MDS), and importance-satisfaction analysis (IPA) was conducted. As a result of the analysis of civic consciousness, in particular, satisfaction with mobility, economy, and environment was low. Accordingly, it was intended to promote the successful implementation of the Safety Speed 5030 policy by presenting measures to improve the speed limit and quality of road service for roads with low satisfaction.

  • Highway geometric design aims to provide drivers with safe and efficient road conditions. Highway design method of Korea doesn't consider demand characteristics of drivers, vehicles etc. Therefore there is a gap between designer's expectation and user's behavior and it hinders to make safer roads. It is required to develop the geometric design criteria and design method based on driving characteristics to provide safe and flexible design. This study suggested a geometric design method of horizontal curves on rural 4-lane highways based on speed distribution.
