Neuroethics and Christian Education (신경윤리와 기독교교육)

  • Christian communities have long sought to find what type of moral judgment is appropriate and what the Christian behavior is, by taking the church's ethical norms and behavior patterns as objects of reflection. In the same context, Christian education also tried to base the psychological rationalism of J. Piaget and L. Kohlberg, but the reason-centered structural development theory was not the answer. In fact, the structural development theory, which emphasized autonomy while excluding emotions from the moral judgment process, over-emphasizing cognition or reason, eventually led to moral relativism, unlike what was intended. In addition, it was criticized for not being able to adequately elucidate the gap between human moral reasoning and behavior, and for attempting to interpret morality excessively within the context of social culture. Recently, these limitations of structural developmental theory have been reinterpreted by neuroethics, especially moral psychology theories, which claim that moral judgment ability is physically wired in the brain and relies heavily on networks between cortical and limbic system. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the newly emerged research themes of neuroethics, and then to discuss two main theories that explain morality in the perspective of neuroethics and the implications that Christian education should pay attention to.

The review of neural basis for prosocial moral motivation and moral decision-making (친사회적-도덕적 동기 및 도덕적 의사결정의 신경학적 기제에 대한 개관 연구)

  • In order to do morally right behavior that we cognitively know, prosocial moral motivation is necessary. Previous studies revealed emotion is important for prosocial moral motivation. This was supported by cognitive neuroscience studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) in which the activity of ventral striatum(VS) was observed when people made moral decision. VS was originally known as the core area of reward process but recently VS was found to respond also to social reward and even feeling of prosocial emotion itself. However it is not clear why VS was activated when people experience prosocial moral sentiments. The aims of this review article were to find situations in which people are prosocially and morally motivated and to understand more about the role of emotion as a moral motivator by examining evidence regarding the neural network, including VS, of prosocial moral motivation and moral decision-making.

The Development and Validation of the Workplace Bullying Bystander Behavior Scale (직장 내 괴롭힘 주변인 행동 척도 개발 및 타당화 연구)

  • This study was conducted with the aim of developing and validating a measure of the workplace bullying bystander behavior. For the purpose, items were developed by referring to previous studies related to workplace bullying, and behavior subtypes were defined as pro-bullying, defending, and bystander behaviors. After confirming the content validity with the help of experts, a total of 31 preliminary items were composed. The final 26 items were selected by conducting an exploratory factor analysis and verifying the validity and reliability of the scale with a survey of 288 office workers who have directly or indirectly witnessed workplace bullying over the past three years. In this process, it was confirmed that defense behavior was distinguished into two types: Active and supportive. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted with data from 518 office workers who have directly or indirectly witnessed workplace bullying over the past year, and the validity and reliability of the developed scale were confirmed. As a result of comparing the competing models to reconfirm the subtypes, it was confirmed again that active defense behavior and supportive defense behavior were distinguished. The criterion-related validity of all subtypes was confirmed by setting the criterion variables for workplace bullying behavior, altruistic behavior, pro-social behavior, fear of intervention, moral disengagement, guilt, and moral identity. Based on the result of this study, follow-up research tasks related to workplace bullying bystander behavior scale were suggested and the methods to prevent and intervene in workplace bullying while utilizing workplace bullying bystander behaviors were discussed.

Clarifying the concept of praxis in Family and Consumer Science Education -In focusing of the concept of phronesis in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics- (아리스토텔레스의 덕론에 기초한 가정과교육에서의 실천 개념 고찰을 위한 시론 (I) -실천적 지혜(phronesis)와 다른 덕과의 관계에 대한 논의를 중심으로-)

  • This study approached the concept of practical or praxis in Family and Consumer Science based on the review of the concept of phronesis in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Aristotle divided human soul into rational part and irrational part. A virtue related with rational part is intellectual virtue and a virtue related with irrational part is moral virtue. Rational part is divided into calculative part and scientific part. Phronesis is one of an intellectual virtue in calculative part of soul. Aristotle defines phronesis as a state of soul that issues in praxis. Phronesis in narrow sense is a virtue which leads to praxis and it is differ from either sophia or techne. Phronesis in broad sense it includes both praxis and poiesis. Phronesis is closely related with moral virtue. Because moral virtues are habits according to right reason, hence right reasons should be considered, and this is intellectual virtue. It is called for attention that what the concept of practical or praxis in Family and Consumer Science Education should be for the determination of the relation with Practical Arts and Technology. This study proposed a tentative conceptualization of praxis and phronimos in context of Family and Consumer Science Education.clothing planning and the most categories(83.3%) had connections of repetitions. The Relationships among Leader-member Exchange(LMX), Leader Integrity, Perceived Team Efficacy, Organizational Citizenship Behavior (LMX, 리더 도덕성, 지각된 팀효능감 및 조직시민행동의 관계)

  • This paper investigates the relationships between leader-member exchange(LMX), perceived team efficacy, and organizational citizenship behavior(OCBI, OCBO) in the Korea Post. Also the study investigates the moderator effect of leader integrity and the mediator effect of perceived team efficacy in the relationships between LMX and OCB(OCBI, OCBO). The multiple regression analysis were employed to test the hypotheses. The main finding of this study was as follows: First, LMX had a positive effect on the perceived team efficacy. Second, the perceived team efficacy had a positive impact on OCB(OCBI, OCBO). Third, the perceived team efficacy completely mediated effect on the relationship between LMX and OCBI. Also the perceived team efficacy partially mediated effect on the relationship between LMX and OCBO. Fourth, the positive relationships between LMX and OCB(OCBI, OCBO) were stronger when leader integrity was high rather than low. In particular, this review concludes with implications for future research, limitations of this study, and practical application.

Exploring framing effect and repetition effect of the persuasive message on moral decision making in conflict of interest (이익충돌 상황에서 설득 메시지의 프레이밍 및 반복에 따른 도덕적 의사결정 탐색)

  • Conflict of interest (COI) is one of the dominant circumstantial factors of moral corruption across various fields. Several management strategies have been proposed to prevent self-interested decision making in COIs. Among these strategies, message persuasion has been considered as a practical and effective approach. Prior studies have found that framing and repetition are two of the major factors in the persuasion effect of message. However, their effect on moral decision making in COI has not been well explored. The purpose of this study was to compare the differential effects of positively framed message and negatively framed message, and secondly, to investigate how the effectiveness of persuasive message changes through repetitive exposures. A total of 63 participants were randomly assigned to one of 3 framing conditions: positive framing, negative framing, and no-message condition. Prior to the on-line experiment involving a consultation task, differently framed persuasive message were presented to the participants. This process was repeated four times in a row. The results showed that participants with positive-framing message were less likely to provide self-interested consultation than participants in the no-message condition. Also, a U-shaped quadric relation between repetition and self-interest consultation was found. Implications and limitations are further discussed.

A Study on the Revitalization of the Blood Donation among College Students Majoring in Public Health-Related Subjects (보건관련학과 대학생들의 헌혈활성화 방안 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the difference and relations on frequency of blood donation, self-esteem and moral behavior of college students majoring in public health-related subjects. 400 college students were surveyed using structured questionnaires for a period from March to June 2014. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient with the SPSS program. There were significantly differences in frequency of blood donation according to gender, grade, blood donation experience of family members and self-esteem. There was a significant positive correlation between frequency of blood donation and self-esteem. However, there was no significant correlation between frequency of blood donation and moral behavior. In conclusion, it has found out that the frequency of blood donation of college students majoring in public health-related subjects was related with gender, grade, blood donation experience of family members and self-esteem. Therefore, it is recommended to consider that encouragement of participation in blood donation to family members would be an effective way to increase frequency of blood donation and then It would be ideal to utilize in establishing policies and promotions towards revitalization of the blood donations.

A Program Development and Application on Educating Sport Ethics (스포츠윤리교육 프로그램 개발 및 적용)

  • This study aims to develop an educational program of sport ethics which would enhance moral autonomy on the part of athletes. First, based on James Rest's Four Component Model of moral behavior, this study has analyzed prior studies and built educational contents. Then, it used dilemma discussions among peers for disequilibrium of cognitive structure. Last, this program has been tested and proven by college students who were thoroughly interviewed afterwards. After joining the program, the student-athletes showed a positive change of thought and action in relation to sport ethics. I hope that this study will contribute to enlarging the field of sport ethics education.

The Consumer Perceived Value in Taekwondo Performance Spectators: Scale Development and Validation (태권도 공연 관람자의 인지된 가치 척도 개발 및 적용)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a valid, reliable instrument to measure perceived value for Taekwondo performance spectators. The perceived value scale for Taekwondo performance spectators was developed in eight phases. For the development spectators perceived value scale (1) literature review, (2) preliminary factors and items selected, (3) assessment of the items, (4) pilot test, (5) data sampling, (6) validity of development scale, (7) assess reliability of items and, (8) predictive validity of development items. Based on three processes, a new perceived value of Taekwondo performance spectators scale with six factors(cultural, social, hedonic, aesthetic, moral and utilitarian value) and 19 items were developed. The result of predictive validity of development items: first, cultural, social, aesthetics, moral of perceived value had significantly influence on spectators attitude. Second, social, hedonic, utilitarian of perceived value had significantly influence on spectators satisfaction. Third, cultural, social, aesthetics perceived value had significantly influence on future consumption behavior of spectators.
