The Effect of Private Tutoring Expenditures on Academic Performance: Evidence from Middle School Students in South Korea ('학교교육 수준 및 실태 분석 연구: 중학교' 자료를 이용한 사교육비 지출의 성적 향상효과 분석)

  • This paper examines the effect of private tutoring expenditures on academic performance of middle school students in South Korea, using data from "Analysis of the Level of School Education and Its Actual condition: Middle School". In the face of endogeneity of private tutoring expenditures, the paper employs an instrumental variable (IV) method and a nonparametric bounding method. Using both methods we show that the true effect of private tutoring on middle school students remains at most modest in Korea. The IV results suggest that a 10 percent increase in tutoring expenditure for Korean, English and math raises a student's test score of the subject at the largest by 1.24, 1.28, and 0.75 percent, respectively. The bounding results also fail to show evidence that an increase in tutoring expenditure leads to economically and statistically significant improvements in test score.

  • 간호사가 사용하는 중재로서 관심을 표현하는 방법이며 의사소통의 통로인 접촉의 한 형태로서의 마사지가 이완과 안녕감을 증진시킬 수 있는지를 알아보기 위해 간편하면서도 장소에 거의 구애를 받지 않는 손마사지를 미국 미네소타주에 살고 있는 22명의 한국 이민노인에게 시행하였다. 자료수집 기간은 1992년 12월부터 1993년 6월까지 약 6개월이 소요되었다. 편의표출방법으로 대상자를 선정한 원시실험연구설계로, 독립 변수로 손마사지를 사용하였고 이완행동, 수축기혈압, 이완기 혈압, 맥박수로 측정한 이완의 정도와 안녕감을 종속변수로 사용하였다. 손마사지는 Snyder등이 개발한 방법으로 한 손에 2분 30초씩 5분이 소요되는데 이틀에 한번씩 6회 실시하였다. 안녕 감을 측정하는 Cantril ladder는 10개의 사다리로 된 도구로 첫번 마사지전, 세번째 마사지후, 그리고 여섯번째 마사지후에 대상자로 하여금 직접 사다리 점수를 매기도록 하였다. Luiselli등이 개발한 이완행동 측정도구로 각 마사지 전후에 대상자의 이완정도를 관찰하였고, 마사지 전후에 혈압과 맥박수를 측정하였다. 자료는 paired t-test와 ANOVA, repeated measures ANOVA로 분석하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 1-6회 동안의 마사지전의 이완점수의 평균값과 1-6회 동안의 마사지후의 이완점수의 평균값을 비교한 결과 마사지후에 이완의 정도가 유의하게 증가하였고 (t=10.70, p=.000), repeated measures ANOVA로 검증한 시간에 따른 효과도 유의한 차이를 보였다. 2. 1-6회 동안의 마사지전의 수축기 혈압의 평균값과 1-6회 동안의 마사지후의 수축기 혈압의 평균값을 비교한 결과 마사지후에 수축기 혈압이 유의하게 저하되었 다(t=6.09, p=.000). 3. 1-6회 동안의 마사지전의 이완기 혈압의 평균값과 1-6회 동안의 마사지후의 이완기 혈압의 평균값을 비교한 결과 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다(t=.27, p=.793). 4. 1-6회 동안의 마사지전의 맥박수의 평균값과 1-6회 동안의 마사지후의 맥박수의 평균값을 비교한 결과 마사지후의 맥박수가 유의하게 감소하였다. (t=4.45, p=.001). 5. Cantril 안녕감의 점수는 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다(F=2.42, p=1.01)

  • The diffusion of new technology has traditionally focused on the adoption perspective. Researchers refer this use-diffusion paradigm to behaviors of use after adoption. This study intends to analyse the influential factors of use-diffusion and continual use of website and applications in medical service. To achieve this a use-diffusion model as a conceptual frame work is suggested. Medical information quality, personal innovativeness and subjective norm are assumed as antecedent variables medical website and application's rate of use, variety of use, and continued use intention as result variables. According to the empirical study results medical information quality, web based application usability, personal innovativeness, and subjective norm have a meaningful influence on medical service consumer's use-diffusion patterns. Also pattern of use influences the continued use intention. This study provides an opportunity to understand medical service consumer's behavior after website and application use adoption and suggests further directions for establishing medical service online marketing strategy by determining influential factors of use-diffusion and continued use of medical online marketing tools.

Differential Effects of Humor Advertising by Expression Type and Receivers' Temperament (유머광고 표현유형과 수신자의 기질에 따른 유머광고의 차별적 효과)

  • The current study analyzed the relationship between expression type of humor ads and their advertising effects and the differences in advertising effects by expression type according to temperament as categorized by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Expression type of humor was classified into arousal-, incongruity-, and superiority-type humor ads. Advertising effects were measured by consumers' cognitive, affective, and conative responses. Three ads were created based on expression type of humor. A personality type, as measured by the MBTI, was categorized into four types of temperament, namely SP, SJ, NF, NT and used as moderating variables. As a result, the advertising effects varied according to the expression type of humor advertising. Interaction effects between ad expression type and temperament on ad feeling and ad preference were also found.

  • Kim et al. (2006) analyzed the donation data surveyed by Voluneteer 21 in year 2002 at South Korea using a Poisson regression based on the mixture of two Poissons and detected significant variables for affecting the number of donations. However, noting the large deviation between the predicted and the actual frequencies of zero, we developed in this note a Poisson regression model based on a distribution in which zero inflated Poisson was added to the mixture of two Poissons. Thus the population distribution is now a mixture of three Poissons in which one component is concentrated on zero mass. We used the EM algorithm for estimating the regression parameters and detected the same variables with Kim et al's for significantly affecting the response. However, we could estimate the proportion of the fixed zero group to be 0.201, which was the characteristic of this model. We also noted that among two significant variables, the income and the volunteer experience(yes, no), the second variable could be utilized as a strategric variable for promoting the donation.

The Effect of the Perception on the Physical Environment in Discount Stores on Customer Satisfaction and Intention (대형할인점의 물리적 환경에 대한 지각이 고객만족과 의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Since discount stores should be operated mostly by the non-human resources regarding the natural characteristics of the business, it is possibly said that their physical environments have been extremely significant. This study attempts to develop the measurement items and construct factors which are especially relevant to the physical environments of the discount stores and examine how the customer satisfaction and intention influence on these construct factors. These provide a useful framework for understanding the problems of measuring and evaluating the physical environments of discount stores. The final factor analysis for each construct factors resulted as four factors, and two categories(amenity and convenience) represented the characteristics of same construct such as the visibility. Then convenience is eliminated, and an attempt was made to add the new variable what is called the visibility. As a result, final construct factors that would be used in this study are made of four items; amenity, accessibility, POP and visibility. This study utilizes the LISREL 8.12 to evaluate the validity of factor structures and measurement model involving the physical environment in discount store. Finally, for the success of the projects, I think that it is necessary to provide comprehensive efforts continuously.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the Government's entrepreneurial support policy(educational support, financial support and marketing support) on entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial intention. This study examined educational support, fund support and marketing support as the The Government's entrepreneurial support polity variables and innovativeness, progressiveness and risk-taking as entrepreneurship variables. The sample of this study was composed of 331 existing and potential entrepreneurs selected from the national panel of a online web survey research firm. Data were collected using self-administerd structured questionnaires and analyzed employing structural equation modelling techniques. This study found that three entrepreneurship variables(innovativeness, progressiveness and risk-taking) had positive direct effects on entrepreneurial intention and that three Government's entrepreneurial support policy variables (educational support, financial support and marketing support) had positive direct effects on entrepreneurship, whereas these three variables had positive indirect effects on entrepreneurial intention. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings were discussed and the directions for future research were suggested.

  • Explosive blasting is a very useful tool for mining and civil engineering applications. It, however, may cause severe environmental hazards on adjacent structures due to blasting impact. Blast engineers try to make optimum blast design to provide efficient performance and to minimize the environmental impact as well. It requires a pre-assessment of the impacts resulting from the blasting operation in design stage. One of the common procedures is to evaluate the proposed blast pattern through a series of test blasting in the field. Another approach is to evaluate the possible environmental effects using the numerical methods. There are a number of input parameters to be prepared for the numerical analysis. Some of them are well understood, while some are not. This paper presents some results of sensitivity analysis of the basic input parameters in numerical modelling of blasting problems so as to provide sound understanding of the parameters and some guidelines for input preparation.

  • The separation and purification of succinate are necessary for the succinic acid production by a fermentation process. Among the purification processes, desalination of succinate is inevitable. In this work, electrodialysis was selected as a desalination method and its operating parameters affecting the degree of desalination and energy consumption were examined. Commercialized electrodialysis apparatus was used in this work and its optimum operating parameters were determined by using design of experiment (DOE) method. Voltage, concentration of succinate, and pH were selected as main parameters. Among them, voltage seemed to be the most important one. The final conversion of succinate to succinic acid was calculated when the operating parameters were optimized. Finally, the effect of impurities, such as corn steep oil, yeast extract, and dextrose on the electrodialysis efficiency was also studied.

Java Automatic Identifier Renaming Technique and Protection Method (자바 자동 식별자 리네이밍 기법 및 보호 방법)

  • This paper introduces a proper renaming service using variable action and security services against the analysis techniques in Java code. The renaming service that is introduced is separated into API pattern and loop condition. We present our scheme algorithm with known Java obfuscation techniques and tools in order to help readers understanding, and implement prototype to prove practicality in this paper. Test result using prototype shows 73% successful variable renaming rate. Using our scheme, cooperators can intuitionally understand all of code. Also, It helps malware analysts to predict malware action by variable name. But application source code that is developed by Java is exposed to hackers easily using our scheme. So we introduce Java application code protection methods, too.
