Comparison of the Pavement Performance for Concrete Overlay and Asphalt Overlay on Aged Cement Concrete Pavement (노후화된 시멘트 콘크리트 포장에 대한 콘크리트 및 아스팔트 덧씌우기의 포장성능 비교)

  • More than sixty percentage of highway in South Korea were constructed by concrete pavements and more than half of the concrete pavements were twenty years or older. Maintenance and rehabilitation of aged cement concrete pavements required early transportation opening due to difficulty of preparing bypass roads, given South Korea's transportation condition and so far, mostly asphalt concrete overlay has been used. However, asphalt concrete pavement maintenance and rehabilitation is costly because of early damage and at the same time, it causes inconvenience to the road users. Recently, as an effective method of rehabilitation for aged cement concrete pavement, bonded concrete overlay is being attempted. Therefore, utilizing various data on year-by-year basis is needed to rationally analyze of the damage on asphalt concrete overlay and bonded concrete overlay is necessary. However, in South Korea database of Serviceability damage on asphalt concrete overlay and bonded concrete overlay does not exist. In this research, performance is evaluated by the LTPP (Long Term Pavement Performance) Data of U.S.A, which accumulated various damage data of asphalt concrete overlay and bonded concrete overlay. However, the pattern distress of asphalt concrete overlay and bonded concrete overlay are different. Therefore, the pavement distress data of each section is collected into database and distress are calculated PCI(Pavement Condition Index) in order to compare life of asphalt concrete overlay and bonded concrete overlay.

  • More than sixty percentages of the highway constructed by concrete pavements in South Korea and over half of the concrete pavements were twenty years or older. The most of South Korea road is hard to provide a bypass in conditions of network of roads. Asphalt concrete overlay has been used for the overlay of aged concrete pavement. However, the cost of maintenance and rehabilitation in an asphalt overlay is expensive by early damage. Therefore, bonded concrete overlay was recently attempted in South Korea as an alterative method of rehabilitation for aged concrete pavement. Hence, it needed to investigate the factors to find performance of the bonded concrete overlay life. However, there is no performance data of the concrete overlay in South Korea. This study was to make a database of an affecting of the pavement life and draws statistical analysis of the performance data on the LTPP (Long Term Pavement Performance) database of U.S.A.

A Study on the Application of Very Rapid Hardening Acrylic Polymer Modified Concrete for Bonded Concrete Overlay Method (접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 공법을 위한 초속경 아크릴계 폴리머 개질 콘크리트의 적용성 연구)

  • Asphalt concrete overlay method is used by general maintenance and rehabilitation of construction for aged concrete pavement in Korea. However, in case of the AC overlay method to extend service life of the existing concrete pavements, various distresses of reflection crack, pothole and rutting are the typical problems of the asphalt overlay on existing concrete pavement since it has different physical characteristics between asphalt overlay and existing concrete pavement. To achieve this, application of concrete overlay method is required instead of AC overlay method. Concrete overlay method has advantages that can reduce maintenance cycle and costs since it has excellent bearing value for heavy vehicles and no rutting. However, technical problems of detour road construction, traffic control and other disadvantages happened by long curing time. Thus, in this study and experimental research were launched to evaluate the workability, durability and resistance against environmental loading of Very Rapid Hardening Acrylic Polymer Modified Concrete(VRH-APMC) for application of bonded concrete overlay method. Test results showed that the compressive and bond strength were exceed 21MPa and 1.4MPa of target strength after four hours for rapid traffic opening properties. And tests of resistance against environmental loading results showed that VRH-APMC secured excellent durability. Thus, it was known that VRH-APMC was suitable material for large scale bonded concrete overlay method, and it was possible to use maintenance and rehabilitation method which needs enough workability and rapid traffic opening.

The most of highway have difficulty in providing detour due to the traffic and road condition of South Korea. So far, asphalt concrete has been used for the overlay of aged cement concrete pavement. However, the frequent early damage and maintenance of typical asphalt overlay due to repetitive maintenance causes inconvenience of road users and expensive costs. It is necessary to investigate the factors affecting the performance of asphalt concrete overlay to improve the performance of asphalt overlay. However, the performance data of asphalt concrete overlay in South Korea does not exist. In this research, to investigate on the factors affecting the life of asphalt concrete overlay was attempted based on statistical analysis of the performance data of asphalt concrete overlay included in LTPP (Long-Term Pavement Performance) Database of U.S.A.

  • Latex modified concrete (LMC) is a successful polymer-portland cement concretes, which have been developed and used for many years, in overlaying bridge decks and resurfacing industrial floors. The excellent bond strength to substrate, easy application and high resistance to impact, abrasion, wear, aggressive chemicals and freeze-thaw deterioration have made this material used widely. The objective of this study was to determine experimentally the load-deflection response and ultimate strength of reinforced RC beams. The cracking patterns and the mode of failure were observed. Because of excellent bond strength and repairing effects, the RC beams repaired by LMC at compression or tension zone showed over 100% recovery from damaged structures. The RC beams overlaid by LMC showed significant improvement at load carrying capacity as overlay thickness increases. However, the beams repaired of tension zone without shear stirrups almost showed no strengthen effect, and indicated an interfacial failures. The interfacial behavior was estimated by numerical method adopting the concept of shear flow.

Early Age Behavior of Thin Bonded Continuously Reinforced Concrete Overlay on Aged Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement (노후 줄눈 콘크리트 포장 보수를 위한 얇은 연속 철근 콘크리트 덧씌우기 포장의 초기거동 평가)

  • Thin bonded continuously reinforced concrete overlay(CRCO) was constructed on He existing jointed plain concrete pavement(HCP) surface at Seo-Hae-Ahn express highway in South Korea in order to evaluate its applicability and performance. Two sections of road were considered for this evaluation. In the first section, the concrete overlayer was placed and cut down to the existing layer to form transverse joints while CRCO was constructed on top of the existing layer in the second section. Early strength concrete(Type III) was utilized for both overlay sections. The depth of milling and the thickness of overlaid layer were 5 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Several vibrating wire gauges(VWG) were installed to evaluate the performance of CRCO with respect to curling, delamination, and crack propagation. As a result of the strength test, it was found that strength of the material reaches the design criteria within 1-3 days. Analysis with vibrating wire gauge(VWG) showed CRCO effectively restricts joint movement. High adhesive strength also was observed from the material regardless of length of aging. Meanwhile, transverse cracks were observed on the middle of the section where JPCP overlay was applied whereas arbitrarily cracks in transverse direction were observed on the section where CRCP was applied.

재생아스팔트 포장의 구조설계 기술

  • 포장구조체에서 요구되는 강도를 갖게 하는 구조 설계의 방법은 경험적 절차부터 반역학적 절차까지 발전되어 왔다. 재생 가열아스팔트혼합물이 기존의 가열아스팔트혼합물(HMA)과 비교하여 비슷하거나 때에 따라 더 좋은 성능을 가져오므로, AASHTO설계지침서에서는 본질적으로 재생(recycled) HMA 재료와 신생(virgin) HMA 재료간의 차이가 없다고 기술하고 있으며, 기존 HMA 재료에 사용되는 덧씌우기설계법의 구조회복 분석방법(structural rehabilitation analysis method)을 재생포장설계에도 권장하고 있다. 재생 가열아스팔트의 설계를 위한 AASHTO 방법은 설계교통량, 교통량 및 수행능력예측의 신뢰수준, 공용기간, 그리고 포장상태 평가지수에 의하여 결정된 포장구조체에서 요구되는 포장두께지수(SN)에 기초한다. 포장두께지수(SN)는 포장층 두께, 상대강도계수, 각 층의 배수조건들의 곱의 조합으로서 나타내어질 수 있다. 덧씌우기로 간주될 수 있는 재생된 층의 포장두께지수(SN)는 기존 포장에서의 포장두께지수와 보강된 포장에서 요구되는 포장두께지수의 차이에 의하여 계산되어질 수 있다. 상대강도계수의 값은 AASHTO 설계지침에 명시되어 있다. AI 방법은 교통량, 노상의 회복탄성계수, 그리고 설계두께를 계산하기 위한 표층과 기층의 종류를 사용한다. 이 방법은 재생된 가열혼합물질과 기존의 가열혼합물질과는 거의 비슷한 성능을 나타낸다고 본다. 또다른 AI 방법에 의하면 재생된 층은 덧씌우기층이라고 간주하고, 현재의 포장두께와 요구되어지는 포장두께 사이의 차를 이용하여 재생될 층의 두께를 산정한다. 소요되는 덧씌우기 두께는 포장의 현장 상태지수(condition rating)와 각 종류에 따른 포장체와 포장재료가 아스팔트 콘크리트층의 등가두께로 전환되어 나타나는 방법에 근거하여 결정될 수 있다. 또 다른 방법은 포장체 각 층의 물성과 하중을 이용한 컴퓨터 프로그램에 의하여 산정된 하중-변형 응답에 의한 설계 방법을 포함한다. 이런 방법들에서는 포장체는 탄성이나 점탄성층 위에서 탄성이나 점탄성 거동을 보인다고 가정한다. 재생 상온혼합물에서의 AASHTO 설계 방법은 가열혼합물의 설계방법과 유사하다. 그러나, 재생 상온혼합물에서의 상대강도계수는 시공방법에 좌우되므로, 기술자의 판단을 근거로 하여 결정되어져야 한다. AI방법에서는 포장구조체를 다층탄성구조라고 보고, 노상의 강도와 설계 교통량을 근거로 요구되는 포장두께를 결정한다. 재생 상온혼합물 기층의 두께는 재생 상온혼합물 기충 위에서 가열아스팔혼합물에 대하여 산정된 덧씌우기 두께를 이용하여 결정할 수 있다. 아스팔트 표면의 재생은 기존 포장의 구조적 능력을 정상적으로 개선할 수 없으므로, 표면 재생의 두께를 설계하는 방법은 없다. 그러나, 임의의 덧씌우기 두께는 기존의 덧씌우기 설계법에 기초하여 산정 할 수 있다. 만약 덧씌우기가 승차감만을 개선시킨다고 여겨진다면, 혼합물에서 사용되어지는 최대 골재 크기에 기초한 최소 두께를 결정할 수 있다.

  • This study was carried out to select most efficient bonding methods of geogrid at the interface of old concrete pavement before placing asphalt overlay layer for reflection cracking retardation. Three bonding methods, a RSC-4 emulsified asphalt, a compound and an unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) were compared in this study. Three types of asphalt mixture (AC 60-80, RLDPE 8%, PG 76-22) and a dense-graded aggregate were used for overlay asphalt pavement. A reinforcing material which consists of a woven fabric underneath a glass fiber grid was used. An expedite test method which is for simulating mixed mode (mode I and II) fracture test was performed using a wheel tracker in laboratory. Cracking development by load repetition was measured as fatigue life (number of load cycle) and expansion of specimen body were measured for each test specimen. The results showed that UPR was the best and RSC-4 the next. But considering field applicability, RSC-4 was considered as an appropriate choice for bonding reinforcing material.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of various joint sealant on reducing the reflection cracking of asphalt concrete overlay on cement concrete pavement. The test method used was an accelerated reflection cracking test in shear mode, which was developed for evaluation of reflection cracking resistance of overlaid asphalt concrete in laboratory. The test results showed that use of joint sealants resulted in a significant reduction of reflection cracking. When sealant E was used, the fatigue life was the highest, with relatively larger horizontal deformation. When Sealant B was used, the dynamic stability was the highest with the smallest horizontal deformation. In general, the greater the tensile strength of sealant, the better the crack resistance of the mixture.

  • The lightweight bubble mixture soil are lightweight soft ground rear, which is used with the material filling. However, comparing with the general soil, it is not valuably useful from domestic. The utilization of the general soil which initial public corporation holds mainly few. The overlay method of general soil decreasing the number of layers increases according to use research study. From the research which consequently, BOX mechanical behavior materials rear executed LCC analyses the general soil which is a material filling and lightweight bubble mixture soil, discussed two kind alternatives and presents the analysis will be able to support the decision-making which is rational from the economics. The expense, which results from the resultant of lightweight bubble mixture soil maintenance, was fewer and was then analyzed with the fact that, will be able to secure an economical efficiency within 6 years.
