  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of optimism on stress on happiness index. The subjects were 3 and 4 grade students who had clinical practice experience among 3 nursing students at G university, and 362 questionnaires were used as research data. The data analysis used regression analysis, SPSS macro and bootstrapping methods to examine the mediating effects of optimism on college students' stress and happiness. The results showed that stress, happiness, and optimism were significantly correlated, and stress had a direct effect on college students' happiness. In other words, the higher the level of stress, the lower the happiness index of college students. The optimism was partially mediated between stress and college students' happiness index. Therefore, in order to increase the happiness index of college students, it is necessary to develop and implement a program for happiness enhancement as one of the program strategies that can enhance stress.

We performed a survey targeting undergraduate students in two Universities at D city and S city, between April 8th and 30th of 2016. After receiving informed consent, a total of 166 university students were recruited. They were asked to fill in a self-reported questionnaire about optimism, emotional-intelligence, and depression. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS version 22.0. The data analysis results showed that the mean score for optimism was $3.67{\pm}0.51$, $3.66{\pm}0.49$, and $3.69{\pm}0.55$ for overall undergraduate students, undergraduate nursing students, and undergraduate non-nursing students, respectively. Moreover, the mean score of emotional intelligence was $3.56{\pm}0.49$, $3.53{\pm}0.49$, and $3.60{\pm}0.51$, respectively. In addition, the mean score of depression was $8.28{\pm}7.48$, $10.97{\pm}7.65$, and $5.50{\pm}5.54$, respectively. It was revealed that a strong negative correlation exists among optimism, emotional intelligence, and depression. This correlation was stronger for undergraduate nursing students than undergraduate non-nursing students. Optimism and emotional intelligence were key factors influencing depression. The degree of this influence was higher for undergraduate nursing students than undergraduate non-nursing students. In conclusion, a program that empowers optimism and emotional intelligence is necessary to manage depression for undergraduate students.

This study seeks to investigate practical measures that can promote optimism utilizing games in a more casual environment based on the research of Seligman(1990), which claimed that the optimism can be learned regardless of temperaments. In Study1, the level of optimism increased from M=-4.7(t1) to M=12.8 in t2(p<.001). In Study2, a control group(n=22) was added with the experiment group(n=21). The level of optimism increased from M=-2.4(t1) to M=11.5(t2) in the experiment group(p<.001), whereas there was no difference in the control group.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of optimism, academic resilience, and major satisfaction of nursing students, and identify influencing factors of major satisfaction. The study was a cross-sectional descriptive correlational design. A convenience sample of 286 nursing students was conducted from a university in Busan. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierachical multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS version 23.0. The average score of optimism, academic resilience and major satisfaction in nursing students were 3.85±0.54, 3.87±0.52 and 3.75±0.63 respectively. The degree of major satisfaction was positively correlated with optimism and academic resilience. The significant predictors of major satisfaction were optimism(β=.385, p<.001) and academic resilience(β=.356, p<.001), explaining 49.2% of the independent variables. Accordingly, in order to increase the major satisfaction level of nursing college students, it is necessary to develop a program that can improve optimism and academic resilience, and apply it in the nursing curriculum.
