Measurement of R-134a Leakage from Vehicle Equipped Mobile Air Conditioning(MAC) System (실차를 이용한 자동차 에어컨 냉매 누출량 평가)

  • CFC-12 used in mobile air conditioning(MAC) system has been replaced by R-134a, a type of HFC refrigerant, from 1991 to 1994. R-134a has since been widely used as a refrigerant of a mobile air conditioner. However, it is one of the six main green house gases listed in Kyoto Protocol, which makes it imperative to regulate its emission and develop alternative refrigerants. In this study, the concentration of leaked R-134a was measured using VT(Variable Temperature) shed and Running loss test shed to analyze the level of air conditioner refrigerant leaked in a vehicle. According to the analysis of the concentration of R-134a leaked from a vehicle parked, annual leakage amount of R-134a was in the range of 6.46~13.28 g/yr. The figure was similar with the leakage from the mobile air conditioning system currently used. In a study using the same vehicle model, a vehicle equipped with dual evaporation system had a higher leakage rate of refrigerant than a vehicle with a single evaporation system. It appears that the added fittings and joints of the dual evaporator system led to higher leakage rate. Besides, the analysis of the change in R-134a concentration under various car speed found that more refrigerant leaked under high speed(100km/hr) and but the volume of the wind did not affect to the variation of refrigerant leakage.

  • The goal of this paper is to measure and compare the performance of solar heat pump for school classroom heating. To accomplish the goal, solar heat pump with alumium roll bond type evaporator and indoor heat exchanger(condenser) was built and fully instrumented with thermocouples and pressure transducers etc. The test results showed that the COP and capacity of R-134a($CF_3CH_2F$) were higher than those of R-12($CF_2Cl_2$). The solar heat pump system for room heating was designed to show the best efficiency that the room temperature make $18{\sim}20^{\circ}C\;and\;23{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ in Seoul during November, December, and January.

External Condensation Heat Transfer Coefficients of R22 Alternative Refrigerants and R134a According to the Saturated Vapor Temperature Change on a Smooth Tube (수평관에서 R22 대체냉매 및 R134a의 포화증기 온도변화에 따른 외부 응축 열전달계수에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) were measured on a horizontal smooth tube at the saturated vapor temperature of $30^{\circ}C,\;39{\circ}C,\;and\;50^{\circ}C$ for R22, R410A, R407C, and R134a with the wall subcooling of $3\~8^{\circ}C$. The HTCs of all refrigerants are the highest at $30^{\circ}C,\;39{\circ}C,\;and\;50^{\circ}C$ in order. This trend is due to its excellent thermodynamic properties of the liquid phase. The measured data of HTCs were compared with the calculated ones by Nusselt's equation for a smooth tube. Measured HTCs of R22, R134a, R410A are $4.2\~7.5\%$ higher than prediction respectively while those of R407C are $15.6\~28.9\%$ lower than the prediction.

Performance of R1234yf and R1234yf/R134a Mixture under Mobile Air-conditioner Operating Conditions (R1234yf와 R1234yf/R134a의 자동차 에어컨 작동 조건에서의 성능 평가)

  • In this study, performance of R1234yf and R1234yf/R134a mixture is measured on a heat pump bench tester in an attempt to substitute R134a used widely in mobile air conditioners (MACs). The bench tester is equipped with a open type compressor providing a nominal capacity of 3.5 kW. All tests are conducted under the summer cooling and winter heating conditions of 7/4 $5^{\circ}C$ and $-7/41^{\circ}C$ in the evaporator and condenser, respectively. For R1234yf/R134a mixture, measurements are made at 5%, 10%, and 15% of R134a by mass. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) and capacity of R1234yf are up to 2.7% and 4.0% lower than those of R134a, respectively. For R1234yf/R134a mixture, the COP and capacity are up to 3.9% lower and 3.6% higher than those of R134a. For R1234yf and R1234yf/R134a mixture, the compressor discharge temperature is $4.1{\sim}6.7^{\circ}C$ lower than that of R134a while the amount of charge is reduced up to 11% as compared to R134a. 90%R1234yf/10%R134a is a better refrigerant than pure R1234yf in that it is less flammable and more compatible with existing R134a system. Based upon the results, it is concluded that R1234yf and R1234yf/R134a mixture are long term environmentally friendly solutions to mobile air-conditioners due to their excellent environmental properties with acceptable performance.

  • This study presented the feasibility of R152a refrigerant as an alternative of R134a which is used in the current automobile air conditioning system. The performance of air conditioning system installed in the actual vehicle was tested using the climate wind tunnel. The experiments were conducted at various refrigerant charge quantities and various driving conditions such as city traffic, highway traffic and parking. Same components and lubricant were used for both R134a and R152a system. The effects of air set values of thermal expansion valve on the performance were also investigated. In case of the R152a system, refrigerant charge quantity can be reduced about 20%, better performance and superior compressor durability is expected due to the lower discharge pressure compared to the R134a system.

Performance evaluation of R22 alternative refrigerants (R22 대체냉매의 성능 평가)

  • In this study, 14 refrigerant mixtures composed of R32, R125, R134a, R143a, R152a, and R1270(Propylene) were tested in a breadboard heat pump in an attempt to replace R22 used in most of the residential air conditioners and heat pumps. The heat pump was of 1 ton capacity and water was employed as the secondary heat transfer fluids. All tests were conducted under ARI test A condition. Ternary mixtures composed of R32, R125, and R134a were shown to have 4∼5% higher COP and capacity than R22 and hence they seem to be very promising candidates to replace R22. On the other hand, ternary mixtures containing R125, R134a, and R152a have lower COP and capacity than R22. R32/R134a binary mixtures show a 7% increase in COP and have the similar capacity to that of R22 and hence they are also good candidates to replace R22. Special care must be exercised when a suction line heat exchanger is used with these mixtures in air conditioners. Finally, the compressor discharge temperatures of all mixtures tested were lower than those of R22 by 15.g∼34.7t, which indicates that these mixtures would offer better system reliability and longer life time than R22.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of an autocascade refrigeration system using the refrigerant miktures of R744 (carbon dioxide) and R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) as working fluids by simulation and experiment. Cycle simulation using a constant UA model in heat exchangers has been performed for R744/134a mixtures of the compositions in the range of from 10/90 to 30/70 by weight percentage. Variations of mass flow rate of refrigerant, compressor work, refrigeration capacity and COP with respect to mass fraction of R744/134a mixture were presented. Performance test has been executed in an autocascade refrigeration system by varying secondary fluid temperatures at evaporator and condenser inlets. Experimental results show similar trend with those from the simulation.

Studies on the Performance of a Cam Driving Electronic Expansion Valve for Vehicles (캠구동 방식을 적용한 자동차 공조시스템용 전자팽창밸브의 성능에 관한 연구)

  • Air conditioning part designs are moving towards higher efficiency and productivity. The expansion device is one of the core parts of an air conditioning system and controls the refrigerant quantity, evaporation load, compression capacity, and condensation capacity. In this study, an electronic expansion valve for two working fluids ($CO_2$ and R134a) was developed for air conditioning systems in vehicles. The valve uses an eccentric cam driving structure instead of a lead screw to decrease manufacturing costs and increase productivity. The pressure resistance and flow rate performance was evaluated using numerical analysis. At maximum operation conditions and burst pressure conditions with $CO_2$, the maximum stresses on the valve model were about 98 MPa and 223 MPa, respectively. The maximum flow rates of $CO_2$ and R134a with different orifice openings were about 550 kg/h and 386 kg/h, respectively. The performance with R134a was verified by experiments.

Study on the Performance Improvement for an Automobile Air Conditioning System Using Alternative Refrigerant R1234yf (대체냉매 R1234yf를 적용한 자동차용 에어컨 시스템의 성능 향상에 관한 연구)

  • The performance of automobile air conditioning systems of R1234yf was evaluated and compared with that of R134a. In particular, the performance evaluation was carried out by installing an internal heat exchanger in order to improve the performance of the system used in R1234yf. A performance comparison between the R1234yf and R134a for automotive air conditioning revealed that the cooling capacity and COP of the 1234yf system without the IHX decreased by up to 7% and 4.5%, respectively, but those with the IHX decreased by up to 1.8% and 2.9%, respectively.
