A Study on the Characteristics of Global FDI on China's Balanced Development Strategy : Focusing on Korean FDI Characteristics by Major Cities in China (중국지역균형발전전략에 미치는 글로벌 FDI 특성에 관한 연구 :중국주요도시별 한국FDI 특성을 중심으로)

  • This study estimates the technical efficiency and total factor productivity(TFP) of and analyzes the relationship between TFP and exports for Korean manufacturing companies from 2000 to 2016. Specially, TFP is decomposed into Technical Change(TC), Technical Efficiency Change (TEC), and Sale Effect(SE), and compared between large and small enterprises. First, in the case of technical efficiency, the Korean economy has been very vulnerable to external shocks, such as the sharp decline following the 2008 financial crisis. The efficiency of the electronics, automobile, and machinery sectors is low and needs to be improved. In addition, the technological efficiency of large enterprises is higher than that of SMEs in most manufacturing sub-sectors except for non-ferrous metals. In the case of TFP, most changes are due to TC, and the effective combination of labor, capital and the effect of scale have little effect, suggesting that improvement of internal structure is urgent. In addition, volatility due to the impact of the financial crisis in 2008 was much larger in SMEs than in large companies, so external economic impacts are more greater for SMEs than large enterprises. The relationship between TFP decomposition factors and exports shows that TC has a positive effect only on exports of SMEs. Therefore, in order to increase exports, in the case of SMEs, R&D support to promote technological development is needed. In the case of large companies, it is necessary to establish differentiated strategies for each export market, competitor company, and item to link efficiency and scale effect of exports.

  • The main aim of this article is to identify the fundamental reason for changes in the geography of Korean foreign direct investment (FDI) in China. More specifically, the article argues that changes in the industrial sectors and the location of FDI resulted from the transition of strategies for Korean FDI in China since the late 1990s is not based on ownership specific advantages, internalization advantages and locational advantages (OIL), but on changes in site where both the needs of Korea and China are articulated, i.e. the strategy for business integration, centering on market, institution and technology. In other words, changes in the location of Korean FDI in China have been the result of changes in the Chinese market structure, institutional changes in Chinese inward FDI incentives and regulations and the accumulation of Korean technology capability since 2000. In addition, by investigating production networks in China, this article attempts to identify the relationships between changes in Korean FDI location and changes in market, institution and technology. Therefore, the empirical evidence provided by the case study of CDMA (code division multiple access) mobile communications FDI since 2000 in China is used to identify the impact of market, institution and technology on the location of Korean FDI in China.

  • 한국산업연구원에서 발표한 '2008년 중국경제 전망'에 따르면 중국은 10%대의 성장세를 유지하면서 물가는 4%대로 안정되고 과다한 무역수지 흑자로 위안화 환율 절상 폭이 확대될 전망이다. 따라서 한국 기업들은 중국 수출 둔화에 대비해 대중국수출을 중국 내수용으로 전환하는 전략이 필요하다. 또한 외자기업의 투자환경 악화에 대비해 대중국 투자전략을 재점검하고 중국경제에 대한 민관 상시 모니터링 시스템을 구축.강화하고 이에 대한 우리정부의 정책적 지원강화도 이뤄져야 하겠다.

A Methodology for Defining the Study Impact Area Using Mode Diversion Trip Rate in Rail Infrastructure Feasibility Study (철도사업에서의 수단전환통행비율을 고려한 분석영향권 설정방법론의 개발)

  • The current Korean preliminary feasibility study guidebook provides a simple method for determining the impact area of a transportation project without taking its characteristics into account, which often leads travelers to switch their travel modes. Hence, this study develops a comprehensive methodology for defining the impact area when evaluating railroad projects, which can significantly affect travel mode choice behaviors. To develop the methodology, a hypothetical project was devised. The analysis results show that the convergence of mode-diverted trip rates is improved from 76% to 93% by implementing the proposed method. In addition, there was a significant difference in benefits (about 10.9 billion won) between adopting the current method and the proposed method.

A Study on Factors Determining the M&A and Greenfield of Korean Firms in China (한국기업의 대(對)중국 M&A 및 신설투자에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 비교 연구)

  • This study analyzes the impacts on the M&A and greenfield of macroeconomic variables of home and host countries, after identifying current status and characteristics of the M&A and greenfield related to the entering way of Korean firms in China. Main empirical results are summarize as follows. First, as for foreign exchange variable, the decreased value of Korea won shows the negative correlations with both of the greenfield and M&A. Second, the real interest rate of Korea to measure the cost of capital is not significant statistically. Third, while the host country's stock market index, Shanghai Comprehensive Index, shows the expected negative correlations with the investment in the case of small & medium firm and light industry, it shows the positive correlations which is not consistent with general expectation in the case of large firm and heavy industry. Fourth, the openness of host country shows the positive correlations with both of the greenfield and M&A. Finally, in regard to the M&A, China's GDP to measure the market size of host country is not significant statistically while it shows the strong positive relationship with the greenfield investment.

  • The trend of China's industry has been changed from manufacturing industry based on cheap labor market to service industries gradually as a whole. The investment of Korean corporations toward Chines service industry is gradually being increased. The importance of Chinese service industry related taxations such as business tax and value-added tax are growing. This study, therefore, examines the changes of investment environment and does the business tax and VAT of growing importance in China. From the point of view that the taxation on services is mainly related to the business tax or VAT, this study, also, examines the changes of present condition of investment and corresponding trends of the Korean corporations, in accordance with the domestic investment environment changes tied to the business tax and the VAT in China. With regard to the business tax and the VAT, this study looks into their features and tax requisition and also makes comparison between them and VAT of Korea. This study examines the problems and situations from the cases of separation, integration and trial integration of the business tax and VAT, and also does the development direction of the above two taxation and the corresponding strategy of Korea and her companies The purpose of this study is to provide information about the changing trends of investment environment and the business tax and VAT and to present corresponding plan for the corporations advancing into China.

Non-linear effects of demand-supply based metro accessibility on land prices in Seoul, Republic of Korea: Using G2SFCA Approach (서울시 수요-공급 기반 지하철 접근성이 토지가격에 미치는 비선형적 영향: G2SFCA 적용을 중심으로)

  • Cities around the world have paid attention to public transportation as an alternative to reducing traffic congestion caused by automobile usage, excessive energy consumption, and environmental pollution. This study measures accessibility to subway stations in Seoul using a supply-demand-based accessibility technique. Then, the impacts were analyzed through land prices by use and segment. As a result of analysis using the multilevel hedonic price models, accessibility considering both supply and demand for the subway had a positive effect on both residential and non-residential land prices. The effect was stronger for residential than for non-residential. Further, among the accessibility measured by the three functions, the accessibility by the Exponential function was most suitable for the residential land price, and the accessibility measured by the Power function for the non-residential land price had the highest explanatory power. Also, looking at the impacts by land price segments, it was found that higher access to metro stations had the greatest positive impacts on the most expensive segment of residential and non-residential land prices. The results of this study can be applied not only to identify the impacts of public investment on neighborhoods, but also to support real estate valuation.
