  • In animation, 'laughter' is an important factor for the fun. Dreamworks' animation is a successful popular animation. It has four series and spin-off animations, and settled as a successful case that created fun with strategic use of parody throughout the productions. Most preceding studies on this animation have focused on its humor, parody, and satire. However, not many studies have discussed its independent comedy as a piece of animation that satisfies the needs of public. This study considered that viewers' desire to watch an animation comes from their fantasies to discuss the comedy of based on its animated characters. Animated characters communicate with the public with wits that ignore the rules of reality. The characters that do not exist in reality are created and animated to turn the world of reality upside down. The comedy in comes from the entertaining deformation of the society's fixed ideas and prejudices. It is a fun variation of the ideology behind fairy tales created by the Disney animations to challenge Disney in the animation market in reality, and twisted the world of fairy tales in the story to quench the thirst of the public. 'Shrek', a monstrous character, stands in the center of the story. A monstrous character that always played an anti-role has become the main character to break the rule of fairy tales. This is the subjectivation of anti-character. Second, it is a new anti-character with an exaggerated and distorted body. Lord Farquad, who looks abject compared to the monstrous character for a person with so much power and ambition, brings laughter. Third, it is the variation of various characters from fairy tales. The conventional fairy tale characters, both animals and non-living things, come out of the box and appear as humorous characters that bring life to the story. uses comedy characters in the process of reinterpreting the fixed ideas, prejudices, and ideologies of the real world created by fairy tales. I hope that it helps Korean animations establish a successful format for creating characters that bring life to the stories.

  • The present study examines the transnational "Hallyu" (the Korean wave) phenomenon after the 1990s in the context of a solidarity movement of East Asian women. It also focuses on the passion for the world stage given the cultural industry was supported by the government as a "chimney-less factory" during the IMF financial crisis. Over the past twenty years and through Hallyu 1.0, Hallyu 2.0, and Hallyu 3.0, "K-entertainment" has been advocated, as a concept that encompasses K-drama, K-pop, etc. in the cultural industry. Furthermore, everything Korean, through K-culture, is being put at the forefront. However, there is insufficient discussion regarding the actions of the women who led the Korean wave. This paper examines the female fans and girl groups who played leading roles in the rise of popular culture and its transnational prominence within the context of the female agency and female labor involved. The lack of acknowledgment of their roles is linked to the current erasure of the discussion on the female youth. Discussion on "woman" is still limited to the domain of reproduction in the generational discussion that has replaced the existing nation-state or class led discussions in the current era of neoliberalism. However, since The reboot or the popularity of feminism in recent years, the interest in the female narrative, in works such as 'Kim Ji-young, Born 1982' has been expanding beyond East Asia to the rest of the world. Just as Hallyu was created by women in the beginning, there is a new trend in which women across national borders are joining in solidarity. As such, the present study attempts to prove that the female fan, girl group, and female youths must be one meta-narrative through a feminist reading, rather than individuals with separate identities.

  • The objective of this study is to systematically understand the swiss graphic style and examine the design ideology of designers and the visual features, with the focus on the posters that played the largest role in the formation and settlement of the swiss graphic style. Although through other visual designs such as editorial design, from the outside beyond posters, the swiss graphic style has evolved to exert a large influence around the world, based on the posters that served as the main medium for expression by designers and that were used the most in instigating the public, this study aims to cast light on the swiss graphic style, which has become recognized as the textbook of the graphic design around the world since the mid 20th century. First, the study casts light on the meaning of the creation of the graphic style through the background and the formation process, aiming to examine the visual features of the swiss graphic style and how they are integrated through the posters of Swiss designers. The personal activities and efforts of individual designers contributed significantly to the formation and development of a certain design style; however this study intends to identify the other equally important elements: the underlying social and cultural influence, the legacy of previous design styles and ideologies, the collective enthusiasm of designers, and the active progress of experimental research.

  • Science reporting is easier to lead to failure than other news reporting because it needs higher professionalism. According to Actor-Network Theory(ANT), not only research results(artifacts) of scientists but also science articles are hybrid networks. Namely, they are connected by human actors(scientist, reporter, etc.) and nonhuman actors(press releases etc.). When the process of science reporting is examined on the view of ANT, it is the process that scientists' results translate the media via press releases as intermediaries and expand their network to the public. This study aims at making an ANT analysis of how research results of Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute(ETRI) scientist Hyun-Tak Kim were reported by lots of media, focusing on the rhetoric of ETRI's press release. It can reveal the reason for the science reporting's failure and hint at the better science journalism.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of books selected for 'The Big Read' community reading initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts from 2006 to 2017 and its relation with 'One Book, One City' community reading campaign in the U.S.A. An analysis of 1,407 TBR programs and 745 participating communities, and 56 books from TBR Library shows that TBR expands and complements 'One Book' reading campaigns, and confirms the sustenance of this innovative model. TBR Libray books were selected with TBR's own criteria, but their features are generally very similar to those of 1,102 books selected for 'One Book' programs. They often reflect some interests in such universal values as coming of age, justice, integrity, etc. and diverse cultural experiences and life. The outcomes of 'One Book' and TBR cannot be qualitatively measured, but their sustainable value of communication through one selected book has been well proved.

  • As an art, Korean dance is a history, a tradition, and a continuing activity of consciousness. It is a present and future activity in the past that will continue the identity of Korean people. So storytelling is not just a description of the historical background, but of eternity that is being recreated. From this study, the inquiry of artistic beauty of Korean traditional dance is questioning the original essence and value of 'storytelling' through old tradition and historical art. If the study of the Korean dance among them was a study of the theorists for the aesthetic essence or the ideological system, the point of view of the storytelling of the Korean dance is that the public understanding about the core structure and reason of Korean dance and the study of the humanistic value It reminded me of a desperate attitude. The meaning of this study is to verify the usefulness of storytelling as a way to construct various contents of Korean dance in conceptual definition of storytelling. In the symbolic meaning of Korean dance, Cheoyongmu text formed the deep meaning network of the original art beyond the linguistic narrative structure and suggested the importance of storytelling development as DB of original contents.

  • In various directions of cartoon, vertical stroll direction is opposite to the page direction of existing published cartoon with the popularity of webtoon and established new genre. Lots of studies on published cartoon focus on the cut direction by page, but webtoon doesn't have any concept of page. The pivot of cartoon oriented people is changed from paper to computer monitor as times go by, characteristics of media are changed and media is gradually diversified. Like the strengthening of mobile caused by smart phone's popularity, tablet PC's propagation in public education, etc. cartoon is included to the environment of media which is rapidly changed. In this situation, one of cartoon's unchanged important identities can be the direction made by harmony between picture and text. This thesis analyzed symbolic characteristics and effective value of hyogwatae, mimetic words of cartoon, focusing on works of Heo, Young Man. Hyogwatae just delivers not only sound but also shape, feeling, status, etc. and has significant characteristics by invoking the imaginary structure of literature. Strengths of modern Korean, various linguistic expressions and syllabic systems, let people feel minute feeling of language and difference of emotion and remember the memory through the direct and indirect experiences, so it makes it nuance. Because of the characteristics, representative works of Heo, Young Man have commercialization and writer characteristics, have communicated with people for a long time and have plentiful knowledge of Korean cartoon. The characteristics of hyogwatae in Heo, Young Man's cartoon make a lot of effects for the expression and delivery of cartoon more than the general expectation. When conducting the study focusing on the symbolic process of language, uncertainty and vague standard of judgement caused by the wide factors of study on the direction of general cartoon could be endured. And, through the Heo, Young Man's deep analysis on hyogwatae's direction, readers enjoy the process while inferring actually and intellectually between pictures and sentences. In the process, the equipment stimulating imagination more than pictures, effects and dialogues is hyogwatae. It's reader's equipment of active participation and its strength is symbolic structure.

  • As a type of mass media, cartoon has been changed by political, economic, and social cultural influences. Certainly, sports cartoon also has been influenced by them. Ever since Park Ki Jung's cartoon came out, which was assumed as the first sports cartoon in Korea, sports cartoons had been used as a means of vicarious satisfaction until 1980s. Sometimes they reflected the phases of the era that struggled to overcome poverty, and adversity followed by war. Sometimes they showed people's suppressed feelings against their society. However, in modern society, the perspective of readers changes in various ways because of the influence by postmodernism. They put more weight on individualism rather than on group, they consider individual tastes very important since personal tastes and diversity has been one of significant factors. For these reasons, sport cartoons were no more what they had used to be. By 1990s, sports cartoons had attracted readers' attention again by presenting distinctive characters, and describing fancy sports skills in cartoons trying to escape from cliche story plots such as stories about rivals, competitions, winners-losers composition, and characters' diligence. Moreover, some sports cartoons contained professional contents focusing on expert sport knowledges, and deepen information of sports. From the point of cultural industries view, these tendencies are heavily affected on sportainment industry which stands out as an emerging industry recently. The ultimate purpose of sportainment industries is making a profit by providing entertainment and amusement for their readers beyond sports games. This study focused on influences that the transition of sports cartoons affects sportainment through concrete cases in context of cultural industries since 90s. The study will analyze the concept of sportainment industries, and discuss the process of sports cartoons' transition. Once sports cartoons keep trying to challenge, and make a progress with aggressive changes, it would give great influences not only to sportainment industries but also to other kinds of pop cultural industries.
