  • Camera monitoring of topographical changes of intertidal flat was performed at Daehang-ri mud flat outside Semangeum sea dike No. 1, where creation of mud flat was reported after sea dike construction. Ground survey on the mud flat is often limited only to points or few line surveys because of difficulty of walking and limitation of working hours by flood/ebb. This study uses natures of tide that the water lines moving on the intertidal flat during a flood indicate depth contours between low and high tide. Ground coordinates for the water lines extracted from the consecutive images of intertidal flat are calculated and information of topography is acquired by integrating all the water line data. Analysis of 6 camera monitoring data between September 2005 and September 2009 shows 0.127 m deposition per year on the average and variation of deposition/erosion in space and time.

  • A new formulae for the estimation of the exposure duration in the inter-tidal zone are developed. The exposure duration is one of the most important factors influencing the habitat distribution of the benthic organisms. The formulae can estimate the exposure duration only using the four major tidal harmonic constants available in almost coastal areas. It is easier than the existing method using the frequency analysis of the hourly tidal elevation data. The estimation results by using the formulae suggested in this study are compared with the value by using the observed tidal elevation data analysis in the west coast, Korea. The mean RMS (root-mean squared) errors ranged form 0.8 to 1.4%. It can be used to simply estimate the accurate exposure duration in the region not having the longterm hourly tidal elevation data.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the application techniques, such as geometrical correction, image overlapping etc., of LANDSAT Thematic Mapper image data especially useful to the geomorphological study of tidal flats. The developed processing techniques were applied to the Kum river estuary. The results of this study are as follows. 1) According to the analysis of the distribution and topographical profiles of the tidal flats, the geomorphological characteristics of the study area seem to be different depending on their location. 2) Even though the geomorphological changes were not always observable on the satellite images, several areas of undoubtful short-term deposition could be detected on the analytical map-image which compares two different situations of tidal flats. 3) Even though a further ditailed study is necessary, the distribution and dispersal patterns of suspended materials and sea surface temperature distribution patterns due to tidal and other meteorological conditions were analyzed by LANDSAT TM channel 3 and 6.

  • The tidal creek dependent mass transport characteristic in Gyeong-Gi Bay (west coast of Korea) was studied using field measured data and numerical model. Gyeong-Gi Bay consists of 3 main tidal channels and contains a well-developed vast tidal flat. This region is famous for its large tidal difference and strong current. We aim to study the effect of tidal creek in the tidal flat on the mass exchange between the estuary and the ocean. For numerical application, the application of unstructured grid feature is essential, since the tidal creek has complicated shape and form. For this purpose, the FVCOM is applied to the study area and simulation is performed for 2 different cases. In case A, geographic characteristics of the tidal creek is ignored in the numerical grid and in case B, the tidal creek are constructed using unstructured grid. And these 2 cases are compared with the field measured cross-channel mass transport data. The cross-channel mass transport at the Yeomha waterway mouth and Incheon harbor was measured in June, 9~10 (Spring tide) and 17~18 (Neap tide), 2009. CTD casting and ADCP cross-channel transect was conducted 13 times in one tidal cycle. The observation data analysis results showed that mass transport has characteristic of the ebb dominance Line 1 (Yeomha waterway mouth), on the other hand, a flood dominant characteristic is shown in Line 2 (Incheon harbor front). By comparing the numerical model (case A & B) with observation data, we found that the case B results show much better agreement with measurement data than case A. It is showed that the geographic feature of tidal creek should be considered in grid design of numerical model in order to understand the mass transport characteristics over large tidal flat area.

  • A two-dimensional numerical analysis is performed for the simulation of intertidal-flat and analysis of hydraulic characteristics during seadike construction in Sae-Man-Keum tidal basin. The shallow water equations are selected as a mathematical model and the Leendertse's ADI scheme is used as the corresponding numerical model. The simulated results of tide and current by the present model agree welt with the experimenta1 results by the hydraulic Lab. or ADC (1989). In the application of the model, the possibility of rapidly varied flow analysis and the introduction of turbulence model required for more accurate hydraulic calculation at closing gap are described. The successive simulation of flooding/drying effects by a modification of the method by Stelling et al. (1986) can easily be used for the intertidal-flat analysis during tidal reclamation.

  • Intertidal algal community of Muchangpo in western coast of Korea was investigated qualitatively and quantitatively. Seasonal changes of algal occurrence, dominant species in cover, vertical zonation pattern and biomass were analysed. A total of sixty-four species of marine algae, one blue-green alga, three green algae, nineteen brown algae and forty-one red algae, were identified. The dominant species in cover were Sargassum thunbergii, Gelidium divaricatum and Pelvetia siliquosa throughout the year. Gloiopeltis furcata was abundant at upper and middle littoral zones and Corallina pilulifera at lower littoral zone. Classification by unweighted pair-group average method and ordination by reciprocal averaging based on the cover data indicated that, on the whole, the intertidal algal vegetation showed different patterns along tidal levels. Seasonal fluctuations of mean biomass were 57.2~92.8 g-dry/$m^2$, and the highest in summer and the lowest in spring season. Seasonal change of community structure was also discussed.

  • The water line moving on the intertidal flat during a flood indicates depth contours between low and high water lines. The water lines extracted from the consecutive images are rectified to get the ground coordinates of each depth contour and integrated to provide three dimensional information of Intertidal flat topography. The tidal flat outside Saemankeum-1 sea dike shows the most obvious changes of tidal flat topography after the construction of sea dikes. This tidal flat topography was observed using digital camera images, and the calculated depths were very similar to in-situ measurement data. Topography changes obtained from two different period data were also examined.

  • This study investigated the depositional environment of the area of Anmyeondo in the mid-western coast of Korea. A total of 142 surface sediments were analyzed, and leveling survey was conducted as well in 12 transects at the sandy tidal flat in the area. The surface sediments are classified into several different types (slightly gravelly Sand, Sand, slightly gravelly sandy Mud, etc.) and they show fining-distribution toward the offshore. Textural parameters are characterized by being coarse, well sorted, positively skewed in the supratidal and intertidal flat, whereas being finer, poorly sorted, negatively skewed in the subtidal flat. According to the C-M diagram, the sediment transport modes are characterized by the mixed mode of bedload and graded suspension in supratidal and intertidal flat, and by graded suspension or uniform suspension in the subtidal flat. Histogram shows a bimodal distribution in the lower subtidal flat which is indicative of two sediment transport modes.

  • The west seacoast has approximately 83% of tidal flat in Korea. Gyeonggi-do and Inchon has 35.1%. This study was carried out to understand depositional environment and properties of tidal deposits that distributed in the Gyeonggi bay. On the basis of observation and description on mineralogical, geochemical, physical properties, detailed sedimentary unit has been respectively distinguished Based on. stratigraphic position, facies and unconformity, the intertidal zones are classified into four sedimentary units, and bedrock over the units has been developed in the order of Unit 4${\rightarrow}$Unit 3${\rightarrow}$Unit 2${\rightarrow}$Unit 1. The intertidal sediment deposits of Gyeonggi Bay were compared with those of west coast. In Cheongra area all strata of Unit 4-Unit 3-Unit 2-Unit 1 appear. In Yeongjong-do Unit 2-Unit 1, in Incheon Bridge and Songdo area Unit 4-Unit 3-Unit 1 are observed. In Daesan area Unit 4-Unit 3-Unit 1 are observed. Average clay mineral content ratio is 8.2% in Cheongra area, 2.9% in Yeongjong Island, 18.4% in Incheon Bridge, 24.6% in Songdo area.
