  • Coupled shear walls can provide an efficient structural system to resist lateral force. However, the reinforcement detail for diagonally reinforced coupling beams required by ACI-318 often causes the difficulties in construction due to the reinforcement congestion and interference among reinforcement. This paper is to evaluate cyclic behavior of High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cement Composite (HPFRCC) coupling beams having reduced transverse reinforcement around the beam perimeter. Experimental test was conducted using three specimens having a beam aspect ratio 2.0. Test results showed that HPFRCC coupling beams with half of transverse reinforcement required by ACI-318 provided similar energy dissipation capacities compared with the coupling beams having reinforcement satisfy the requirement of ACI-318.

  • In this study, seismic control performance of friction dampers installed in a reinforced concrete shear wall-moment frame system, of which main lateral force resisting system is a shear wall, is investigated. Three configurations of friction dampers are investigated. One is a diagonal brace type reinforcing the shear wall directly, another is a diagonal brace type reinforcing the moment frame without the shear wall, and the other one is a vertical boundary element type installed at both ends of the shear wall. In addition, various levels of the total friction force and its distribution methods are examined. Time history analysis considering material nonlinearity is conducted for seismic loads increased by the enhanced design code compared to the initial design loads, and energy dissipation, lateral loads and structural member damages are analyzed. As a result, the shear wall-reinforcing diagonal brace type with the total friction force of 30 % of the reference friction force gives the best performance on the whole, and the distribution methods of the friction force do not have remarkable difference in effects. Also, concentrated installation in adjacent four stories shows just a little compromised control performance compared to the entire story installation.

  • A study was conducted to secure structural performance as well as improve workability by improving the reinforcement details of special shear wall and coupling beams. Based on the specimen in which the existing diagonal bundle reinforcement and shear reinforcement were placed, the specimens replaced with thick diagonal reinforcing bars and the specimens replaced with horizontal reinforcing bars were selected as variables. As a result of the experiment, the specimen, which replaced the existing diagonal reinforcement with a thick-diameter reinforcement, showed a similar behavior to that of the basic specimen, and it was evaluated that it can be applied as an alternative to the details.

  • Coupled shear walls are effective lateral force resisting system in which coupling beams link individual walls. For improving the energy dissipation capacity of coupling beams, diagonal reinforcement details were developed. However, it is difficult to construct diagonal reinforced coupling beams due to the congestion of reinforcement in the beam. For resolving the problem, this study developed precast coupling beams with bundled diagonal reinforcement. To reduce the reinforcement congestion, bundled diagonal reinforcement were placed in the coupling beam. To evaluate the cyclic performance of coupling beams with bundled diagonal reinforcement, experimental test were conducted. For this purpose, two slender specimens with an aspect ratio of 3.5 were made and tested. It was observed that the cyclic performance of the coupling beam with bundled diagonal reinforcement was similar with that of the coupling beam with normal diagonal reinforcement placed according to design code to ACI 318-11.

  • Coupling beams serve as primary source of energy dissipation in coupled shear wall systems during large earthquakes. However, the overestimation of the shear strength of diagonally reinforced coupling beams may be adverse effect on the seismic performance of coupled shear wall systems. In order to force coupling beams to properly work during earthquakes, coupling beams should be designed with accurate shear strength equations. The objective of this study is to propose the accurate shear strength equation for slender diagonally reinforced coupling beams. For this purpose, experimental tests were conducted using three diagonally reinforced coupling specimens with different amount of transverse reinforcement under reversed cyclic loads to evaluate the hysteretic behavior of the specimens. The test results show that transverse reinforcement of slender diagonally reinforced coupling beam affects the maximum strength and drift ratio.

  • In this paper, a bundled diagonal reinforcement using high performance steel fiber was proposed to enhance the construct ability and seismic performance. Experiments of coupling beam was composed of four specimens and the hysteretic behavior evaluated for reverse cyclic loading to specimens using high performance steel fiber. The main variables of the experiment is a amount of stirrup and bundled reinforcement, depending on whether the mix of steel fiber. Specimen which criteria was applied 100% of stirrup and bundled diagonal reinforcement of ACI318 criteria. With this, by appling same diagonal reinforcement, two specimens were created by adjusting stirrup of 75%, 50%. So, a total of four specimens were produced. When coupling beam was placed concrete, this experiment was mixed in a content of steel fiber 1%. All the specimens were produced by aspect ratio 3.5(l/h=1050/300) to a half-scale. In this result, two specimens as reduced to stirrup of 75%, 50% was no significant difference in the strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity, respectively compared to the stirrup of 100%.

  • Coupling beams posses proper strength, stiffness and ductility capacities to resist efficiently under seismic loads. The strength, stiffness and ductility capacities for special diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beam with a span-to-depth ratio 2.0 or less is higher than those of coupling beam with conventionally reinforced concrete coupling beam. However, diagonally reinforced detailing creates major construction problem. In this study, design alternatives for diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams were experimentally investigated. The results show that angle reinforced coupling beam(specimen SA) exhibited a better stable behavior in comparison with non-diagonally coupling beams(specimens SB-series) and sustained corresponding drift ratio, peak-to-peak stiffness and cumulative dissipated energy in comparison to diagonally coupling beam(specimen CA).

  • The current seismic design code prescribes that coupling beam should be reinforced using diagonally bundled bars. However, the use of a diagonally bundled bars has a negative effect on constructability and economic efficiency. In the present study, the seismic performance of 4 coupling beams with the different details of reinforcement was evaluated through a cyclic reversal loading test. The specimens were constructed to measure the results of the experimental variable regarding the details of shear reinforcement. Next, the seismic performance of the coupled shear wall system evaluated by methods proposed in the FEMA P695. The cyclic reversal loading test results of this study showed that the performance of coupling beams with relaxed reinforcement detail was almost similar to that of a coupling beam with the ACI detail and meet the level which requested from standard. The result of the seismic evaluation showed that all coupling beams are satisfied with the design code and seismic performance.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural performance of doubly reinforced composite beams with steel fiber concretes and steel angles. For this purpose, total 6 specimens whose variables are shear span-to-depth ratio, existence of shear reinforcement, and shear reinforcement details, are made and tested. All specimens are constructed of steel fiber concretes with specified compressive strength of 30 MPa and steel fiber volumn content of 1%. From the experimental results, structural performance of doubly reinforced composite beams are evaluated in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility, and energy absorbing capacity. For the better structural performance, it is recommended that the composite beam is designed with diagonal shear reinforcement.
