The purpose of development new variety 'Miho' (Hordeum vulgare L.) is a favorite with livestock feed and develop varieties resistant to disease and lodging. 'Miho' was carrying out the growth habit of group III with green and mid-wide leaf. Awn that is related to preference of livestock is a semi-smooth awn. This cultivar had 96 cm of culm length, 650 of spikes $per\;m^2$. Heading date of 'Miho' was April 27, and maturing date on May 30, which were later than cultivar 'Youngyang'. It also showed strong winter hardiness, and similar resistance to shattering and bariy yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) compared with those of check one. The best thing among the traits of a good quality with the plant green at the latter growing period. The average forage dry matter yield in the regional yield trial was about 13.1, 12.1 MT per ha in upland and paddy field, respectively, which were 9%, 2% higher than that of the check cultivar. It's also showed 6.8% crude protein, 27.1% ADF (acid detergent fiber), and 67.5% TDN (total digestible nutrients), including higher silage quality for whole crop barley. This cultivar would be suitable for the area whose average minimum temperature was above $-8^{\circ}C$ January in Korean peninsula.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of seeding date on agronomic characteristics, productivity and feed value of Italian ryegrass, barley and rye during cropping after rice in Suwon, middle region of Korea, during 2004 and 2005. In general, early seeding (26 September) showed longer plant length and branch numbers per square meter than late sowing (11 October). Italian ryegrass had more early seeding effect than barley and rye. The yield of each plant was affected by sowing date in all experiments: the earlier seeding had higher yields than late seeding. In case of Italian ryegrass and barley as late-heading varieties showed more early seeding effect than rye. On the other hand, feed value tended to respond differently to yields. The feed value of each plant were based on liquid swine manure (12%) > composted cattle manure (7%) > composted swine manure (2%). The present results highlight the earlier planting obtained higher yield compared to those planted conventionally.

A new barley(Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar 'Dachung' having high forage yielding and good silage quality was developed at National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2015. This cultivar was derived from a cross of the 'Sunwoo' and 'Keunalbori1ho' in 2002. And it's promising line showed both high yield and lodging resistance through the preliminary and advanced yield trials(PYT, AYT) at Iksan from 2010 to 2012. It was designated as the 'Iksan479'. 'Iksan479' was conducted to regional yield trials(RYT) in six locations around Korea for three years from 2013 to 2015. And it was released as the name of 'Dachung'. It has erect plant type, growth habit of IV and green leaf. In the paddy field its heading date was April 24 and maturing date was May 26, same day with 'Youngyang'. Plant height of 'Dachung' was 99cm. Dachung's spikes per $m^2$ was 625. It has high rate of leaf blades, resistance to BaYMV(Barley Yellow Mosiac Virus) and better winter hardiness than that of 'Youngyang'. The average dry matter of 'Dachung' was about $11.9ton\;ha^{-1}$ in paddy field. And average feed quality of 'Dachung' was 9.0% of crude protein content, 31.3% of ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber), 54.4% of NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber), 64.0% of TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients). 'Dachung' had grade I of silage quality. This cultivar would be suitable for the area above the daily minimum temperature of $-8^{\circ}C$ in January in Korean peninsula.
"Hyedang", a new covered cultivar derived from the crosses between "Suwon300" and "Haganemugi//CI08397/Haganemugi" developed at the Honam Agricultural Research Institute (HARI), NICS, RDA in 2007. The origin of "Hyedang" is "Iksan 407" (SB951033-B-B-B-72). The initial cross was made in 1995 and the selected line showed a high yield and good quality characteristics under yield trial test in 2004. "Iksan407" consistently performed well for three years (2005-2007) from the four locations of regional yield trial (RYT) in Korea and released as "Hyedang". The characteristics of "Hyedang" were the following: rate III growth habit, green leaf and stem, compact spike and with long rough awns. The heading date was April 25 in upland and April 17 in paddy field, which was 2 and 3 days earlier than that of check cultivar, "Olbori". The culm length was 80 cm which was 8 cm shorter than those of check cultivar. It showed spike length of 4.3 cm and 696 spikes per $m^2$, 51 grains per spike, 35.0 g of 1,000 grain weight and 704 g of test weight. It showed stronger winter hardiness and higher resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) than those with check cultivar. It showed similar protein content and higher whiteness than those of the check cultivar and diastatic power was higher than that of Olbori. The average yield of the pearled grain in the RYT was $4.17ton\;ha^{-1}$ in upland and $4.27ton\;ha^{-1}$ in paddy field, which was 23% and 9% higher than that of the check cultivar, respectively. This cultivar would be suitable for the area above the daily minimum mean temperature of $-8^{\circ}C$ in January in Korean peninsula.
We developed a new barley cultivar "Dami" (Hordeum vulgare L.) with the auricleless gene lig (al, li, aur-a). The characteristic of auricleless is a spontaneous mutant type which has known as a monogenic recessive gene. The plant with the gene has erect leaf blades because of no auricle. The cultivar was derived from a cross between 'BGS60' and 'Kangbori'. 'BGS60' has the auricleless gene (li), while 'Kangbori' showed a high biomass with winter hardiness and resistance to BaYMV (Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus). Subsequent generations were handled by the bulk method in a pedigree selection program. A promising line showed both high yield and lodging resistance in the yield trials at Iksan in 2003 to 2004, and designated as Iksan414. The line was subsequently evaluated for winter hardiness, earliness, and yield in the seven locations around Korea for three years from 2005 to 2007 and was designated as "Dami" and released. It has the growth habit of III, erect plant type, green leaf and stem similar to the check cultivar 'Sunwoo' Its heading date was April 30, and maturing date May 31 in paddy field conditions, which were similar to those of 'Sunwoo' respectively. The cultivar Dami was 97 cm in culm length, had 643 spikes per $m^2$ and higher leaf dry weight, and better adaptability to dense planting, winter hardiness, and resistance to BaYMV than the check cultivar did. The average forage yield of "Dami" was about 12 ton $ha^{-1}$ in dry matter (33 ton $ha^{-1}$ in fresh matter) in paddy field. "Dami" also showed 7.5% of crude protein content, 28.5% of ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber), 50.1% of NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber), and 66.4% of TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients), including higher grade of silage quality for whole crop barley. This cultivar would be suitable for the area where the daily minimum temperature of January is above $-8^{\circ}C$ in Korean peninsula.

This study was carried out to find out the effect of seed date and rate on the agronomic characteristics and yield of forage barley in paddy field of Suwon, from 2001 to 2003. The main plots were consisted of different seeding dates such as 5th and 20th October and 5th November. The subplots were consisted of different seeding rates of barley such as 160, 190 and 220 kg/ha. Plant height was increased at the early seeding. Dry matter(DM) percentage of barley was decreased as the seeding date was delayed. Dry matter percentages of 5th and 20th October and 5th November were 47.4, 41.5 and 34.5%, respectively. Fresh matter yield of barley decreased from 30,092 to 16,018 kg/ha as the seeding date was delayed. And fresh matter yield of barley was significantly increased with the increase in the seeding rate. Dry matter yield of barley decreased from 14,230 to 5,521 kg/ha as the seeding date was delayed. And dry matter yield of barley was significantly increased with increase in the seeding rate(p<0.05). The results obtained from this study indicate that both the seeding date of 20th October and seeding rate of 220 kg/ha would be recommendable for forage yield of barley in paddy field.

This experiment was conducted to compare the agronomic characteristics and productivity of barley at paddy field of Iksan (National Honam Agricultural Experiment) from 1998 to 2001. The most fast 50% heading stage date variety was Keunalbori, Tapkolbori and Sodunchalbori, but Kinssalbori was very late as 3th May. The average dry matter (DM) content of naked and hulled barley were 37.9% and 37.1%, respectively. Saessalbori and Naehanssalbori of naked barley showed the highest in DM yield by 11,260 kg/ha and 11,160 kg/ha but the DM yield of Kinssalbori was low by 7,530 kg/ha. And Milyang 92, Keunalbori and Tapkolbori of hulled barley showed the highest in DM yield by 12,730 kg/ha, 12,320 kg/ha and 12,300 kg/ha but the DM yield of Olbori was low by 6,660 kg/ha. Acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and total digestible nutrient (TDN) content of naked varieties was 30.3%, 60.8% and 65.1%, and ADF, NDF and TDN content of hulled varieties was 33.6%, 61.1% and 62.4%, respectively. And Tapkolbori showed the highest grain yield by 6,370 kg/ha. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested that "Milyang 92, Keunalbori and Tapkolbori" would be recommendable for fall sown barley cultivar for at paddy field in Honam region.
The studies were performed to obtain the basic informations on the influence of weather condition for grain yield and yield components in barley. The data of Olbori tested in 9 sites for 12 years were used in the studies. Milled grain yield was decreased in paddy field after rice harvested comparing to the upland condition, and yield potential was differed by test sites with the most stable yield in Gyeongnam. The coefficients of variation analyzed for milled grain yield by years were 12.2-42.6% with the differences between high-yield and low-yield year. Heading date was earlier in high-yield year and southern part compared to the low-yield year and middle part of the Korean peninsular showing the negative correlation between grain yield and heading date. High-yield year showed longer in culm length, shorter in spike length, almost same in number of grains per spike, and lower in 1,000grain weight compared to the low-yield year. Correlation analyzed between number of spikes and grain yield showed positive relationship. Temperatures affected to the grain yield analyzed by high in vegitative growth stage, low in alternative growth stage, and almost same in reproductive growth stage in high-yield year comparing to the low-yield year, however no remarkable differences of temperatures affected were detected in over wintering stage between high-yield and low-yield year. Precipitation amount in high-yield year was lesser in sowing time, more in seedling time, and lesser in over wintering time than those of the low-yield year. Correlation between rainfall amount in the early of April and grain yield showed significant negative correlation with the remarkable affects to the grain yield. Sunshine hours in high-yield year were longer in sowing time, shorter in over wintering time, and after the over wintering time to harvesting time was longer than those of the low-yie-ld year.

To clealify the cause of barley and wheat sterility that occurred 77 / 78 cultivation period in Yeongnam area, a few environmental conditions were analyzed. The results are summarized as follows; 1. During the important growing stages such as meiosis and heading stages of barley encountered with severe droughtiness and unusual low temperature. 2. Soil moisture contents in the double cropping paddy soils were higher than cultivated uplands, and in the subsoils than the surface soils, in the clay soils than the sandy soils, in the northern aspect than the southern aspect of slope, respectively. 3. The sterilizing percentage of barley in the double cropping paddy fields were lower than cultivated uplands, in the alluvial fans and plains were lower than cultivated uplands, in the alluvial fans and plains were lower than in rolling or in foot slopes and the northerm aspect of slopes were lower than southern aspect. 4. The sterilizing percentage in the sandy soils were higher than clay soils and in the soils that have shallower plowing layer and shallower available depth had higher sterility. 5. The sterilizing percentage of barley had negative correlation with soil moisture contents in the surface and subsoils in both of cultivated upland or double cropping paddy fields. 6. The droughtiness that prevailed over reproductive growing stages of barley might be cause the sterility and the severe coldness also could be accelerate the phenomenon.
To determine the optimum harvesting date with good grain yield and quality, six different harvesting dates were tested from 25 to 50 days heading with five days intervals, using two varieties of Baekdong, naked barley and Olmil, wheat. The dates when grain yield, 1,000 grain weight and grain/whole spike weight ratio were reached to the highest were 35 and 40 days after heading for Baekdong and Olmil, respectively. Various grain qualities such as unhulled grain, plumpness, protein content and whiteness of grain were also very good at that times. One day earlier harvesting before the optimum dates resulted in yield decreases by 3.9% for Baekdong and 4.4% for Olmil. And it might be delayed for each 5 days with Combine harvesting.
