  • This experiment was conducted to compare the change of growth and canopy photosynthesis between transplanting and direct seeding on paddy surface in rice. Total tiller number by the early vegetative growth stage was significantly higher in the direct seeding flooded paddy surface, while it was reversed from later vegetative growth stage in terms of tillering ability per unit period. But total panicle number was higher in direct seeding on paddy surface. Leaf area index, nitrogen content in leaf blade and canopy photosynthetic ability at later vegetative growth stage were lower in direct seeding on flooded paddy surface than transplanting. Biological yield at harvest stge, leaf area index and conopy photosynthetic activity at heading stage were gradually increasing according to nitrogen level increased both transplanting and direct seeding on paddy surface. Leaf area index, canopy photosynthetic activity, however, were lower in direct seeding on paddy surface than transplanting in the same nitrogen level. Nitrogen content per unit leaf area was high in transplanting.

  • Performance of a rice breeding line, Milyang 95 was evaluated at four cultural methods, direct seeding on dry soil covered by making ridges (DS ridged), direct seeding on dry soil covered by rotortilling (DS rotary), direct seeding on flooded soil (FS), and machine transplanting (MT). Days from seeding to emergence in both DS ridged and DS rotary was 15 days. The number of seedlings at DS ridged and DS rotary was lower than that at FS. Heading was earliest at MT, latest at DS rotary and DS ridged, and that at FS was between them. Days from seeding to heading was 115 days at MT, 94-95 days at DS ridged and DS rotary, and 87 days at FS. Lodging index was similar among the cultural methods and lodging was not occurred in the field although fresh weight of tillers and breaking strength at MT were higher than those of direct seedings. Yield and most of yield components were similar among the cultural methods although the number of spikelets per panicle at MT was higher and 1,000 grain weight at FS was lower compared to other cultural methods. Grain appearance (rusty, chalky abortive rice), protein and amylose contents and alkali digestibility were observed.

  • This study analyzed stratification and destratification processes in the Kangjin Bay (KB), South Sea, Korea, driven by the Nam Gang Dam water discharge based on numerical modeling experiments. Model performances were evaluated in terms of skill scores for elevation, velocity, temperature and salinity, with scores mostly exceeding 90%. The models reproduced the tidal current, density-driven and wind-driven current. The stratification by fresh water input and destratification by the wind mixing was assessed in terms of the characteristic Richardson number (Ri) in that Ri increased from 0 to 7~20 during the Dam water discharge period, while vertical mixing and destratification followed by the typhoon passage showed Ri, 0 to 2.

  • This paper presents the seasonal variation of distribution and flushing time of the fresh water in Suyoung Bay based on the monthly observation from May 1989 through April 1990 and Pusan City Report of Suyoung Bay. Most of Suyoung river water was trapped inside of the bay west of the Dong-Baek Island located. Low salinity water lies dominantly on the right hand side of the Suyong river. Salinity structure of the bay is the well mixed type in summer and the partially mixed type in other season. The fresh water fraction varied in an exponetial manner from unity at the head of bay toward a value of zero at the its mouth. The calculated average flushing time during a year was about 10-15days. About 1.5 days was in summer because the strong fresh water discharge from the river was dominated in the bay.

  • The Relative weight index is an index for evaluating nutritional condition of fish by calculating a ratio of observed weight to standard weight. The purpose of this study is estimating standard Length-Weight relationships (standard LWRs) to calculate standard weight for application of relative weight index and analyze frequency distribution of relative weight index of 10 freshwater fish in the South Korea. The standard LWRs for each species was calculated by the Length-Weight data sets from 798 times of captures at 141 sites. The correlation of determination (r2) for all species was over 0.9 and values of parameter b were within the expected range according to Froese (2006). We calculated in increments of 10 from 10 to 90 percentile of relative weight index for each species, and it could be used as a standard for quantitative assessment of nutritional condition of freshwater fish.

  • This study presents the alteration of flow regime by effects of dams and water use in the Geum River Basin. The surface water use rate and the Impounded Runoff (IR) index were examined to assess the pressure indicators of the flow alteration. We applied the flow duration curve, flow regime coefficient, flood and low-flow frequency analysis as well as Range of Variability Approach (RVA) to investigate the quantitative changes in natural flow regimes. The results indicate that the high flow decreased and low flow increased respectively compared to the natural flow regimes at eight gauging stations. The Geum river is regulated by 139 dams and reservoirs storing 24% of the annual mean discharge and has high surface water use rate of 36%. These indicators are main pressure factors to alter flow regimes.

  • As a parameter for hydrodynamic modeling to define the range of seawater intrusion, dispersivities are frequently determined from pre-experiments or theoretical studies because field experiments need a lot of time and expenses. If the dispersivities are inadequate for an aquifer, the numerical results may have some errors. We examined the validity of longitudinal dispersivities by comparing the ranges of seawater intrusion with numerical modeling, field data and apparent resistivity sections. In the numerical modeling the TDS distributions simulated by the Xu's longitudinal dispersivity are more similar to the values of TDS measured at monitoring wet]s and boreholes than those by the Neuman's longitudinal dispersivity. The ranges of seawater intrusion by numerical simulations using Xu's longitudinal dispersivity show that the contour line of 1000 ㎎/L. as TDS is located at 480 m from the coast in May, while at 390 m in July. The difference is originated from the shift of the interface between seawater and fresh water. It moved toward the coast in July because of the seasonal increase of hydraulic gradient according to rainfall. A contour line of 15 ohm-m was used to define the range of seawater intrusion in apparent resistivity sections. From this criterion on the interface between seawater and fresh water, the range of seawater intrusion is located at 450 m from the coast. This result is similar to the range of seawater intrusion simulated by the numerical modeling using Xu's dispersivity. Therefore the range of seawater intrusion shows the difference due to the dispersivities used for the hydrodynamic modeling and the dispersivity generated by the Xu's equation is considered more effective to decide the range of seawater intrusion in this study area.

  • Fish fauna and community structures in freshwater were analyzed in the streams (12 stations) of the Bogil Island from May to September 2015. Total numbers of the sampled species and genus (9 families) were 21 and 17, respectively. Gobiidae was the most dominant taxa, which accounted for 47.6% (10 species) of the total species, and the relative abundance, based on the number of individuals, was 60.4% (1,157 individuals). Subdominant families were three taxa of Cyprinidae (3 species; 500 ind.), Mugilidae (2 species; 168 ind.) and Mugilidae (2 species; 128 ind.). The dominant species, based on the relative abundance, was Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (20.7%) and the subdominant species were Gymnogobius urotaenia (19.5%), Leucopsarion petersii (17.2%) and Chelon haematocheilus (8.5%). These species were composed of upstream-resident fish as well as migratory fishes, so the streams of the Bogil Island had unique characteristics in the fish compositions. Based on all the species sampled, 9 species (42.9%) were primary freshwater fishes, 11 species (52.4%) were peripheral fishes and 1 species (4.8%) was amphidromous fish. Korean endemic species and exotic species were not found in the streams of Bogil Island. According to the analysis of fish community structure, species richness index and species diversity index were highest (1.831, 1.957) in the Site 8 and lowest in the Site 4. In the meantime, the dominance index was highestin the Site 4 (1.00) and lowest in theSite 8 (0.17).

  • The location and the shape of freshwater-saltwater transition zones in coastal aquifers are affected by many hydraulic variables. To date most work to determine the effects of these variables are limited to qualitative comparison of transition zones. In this work characteristics of transition zones (maximum intrusion length, thickness, and degree of stratification) are quantified, and effects of principal hydraulic variables(velocity and dispersivity) on these characteristics are studied using a numerical model. Dimensional analysis is used to assemble entire model results. Effects of velocity and dispersivity are seen clearly. From this study, increase in velocity is found to cause shrinkage of transition zones. This observation contradicts claims by some that, because dispersion is proportional to velocity, increase in velocity would cause expansion of transition zones.
