  • In this paper, the results of monotonic loading analysis with four steel models and one composite model were shown. The effect that moment transfer efficiency of a web and strain concentration at a steel beam-to-column connections was investigated. Analysis results showed that the moment transfer efficiency of the analytical model with box-column was poor when comparing to model with H-column due to out-of-plane deformation of the box-column flange. The presence of scallop, thin plate of box column and floor slabs was also a reason of the decrease of moment transfer efficiency, which would result in a potential fracture of the steel beam-to-column connections. Analytical results were compared with experimental results based on previous test. As a result, the deformation capacity of connections with a box-column or a floor slab decreased due to the poor moment transfer efficiency and the strain concentration of beam flange in the vicinity of the steel beam-to-column connections based on the experimental data.

  • High Performance Fiber-reinforced Cement Composite (HPFRCC) shows the multiple crack and damage tolerance capacity due to the interfacial bonding of the fibers to the cement matrix. For practical application, it is needed to investigate the fractural behavior of HPFRCC and understand the micro-mechanism of cement matrix with reinforcing fiber. This study is devoted to the investigation of the AE signals in HPFRCC under monotonic and cyclic uniaxial compressive loading, and total four series were tested. The major experimental parameters include the type and volume fraction of fiber (PE, PVA, SC), the hybrid type and loading pattern. The test results showed that the damage progress by compressive behavior of the HPFRCC is a characteristic for the hybrid fiber type and volume fraction. It is found from acoustic emission (AE) parameter value, that the second and third compressive load cycles resulted in successive decrease of the amplitude as compared with the first compressive load cycle. Also, the AE Kaiser effect existed in HPFRCC specimens up to 80% of its ultimate strength. These observations suggested that the AE Kaiser effect has good potential to be used as a new tool to monitor the loading history of HPFRCC.

  • Flat plate are being used more in buildings requiring a high level of technical installations or in buildings needing changeable room arrangements during their life time such as office buildings. The main problem in flat plate is its weak resistance against a punching failure at its slab-column connections. Therefore, in this research, an experimental study on full-scale interior slab-column connection was performed. Three types of shear reinforcements were tested to prevent brittle punching shear failure that could lead to collapse of the structure. A series of four flat plate specimens including a specimen without shear reinforcement and three specimens with shear reinforcements were tested. The slabs were tested up to failure using monotonic vertical shear loading. The presences of the shear reinforcements substantially increased punching shear capacity and ductility of the interior slabcolumn connections. The test results showed that a slab that did not have enough bond length failed before shear reinforcement yielded due to anchorage slip. Also, FEM analyses were performed to study an effect of slab thickness and concrete compressive strength on the flat plate slab. The analytical study results were used to propose a method to calculate performance capacity of shear reinforcement in slab-column connection.

  • In this study, the structural experiment was conducted with two types of specimens to investigate the mechanical behavior of the column-rafter-purlin connection of an arch-type greenhouse under monotonic loading. Based on the experimental results, the flexural performance was analyzed for two types of connections, and connection classification was attempted. Type B showed 77% of flexural performance compared to Type A, and both types showed that the rigidity and flexural strength did not reach the level of the full rigid. The behavior of the column-rafter-purlin connection was dominated by local buckling due to deformation of the weld and fasteners. As a result of connection classification by AISC standard, both Type A and B connections showed a result that did not meet the rigid connection performance assumed during design, and were classified as simple connection. Therefore, the connection performance evaluation and classification results show that the greenhouse design should be made in consideration of connection performance and in order to design a reliable greenhouse structure, a study on establishing clear design standards for the greenhouse connection is necessary.

  • Among many connection methods of reinforcing bar, the grout-filled splice sleeve system is very effective method of precast concrete construction due to its superior construction efficiency, such as large allowable limit to arrangement of reinforcing bars, good application of large sized reinforcing bars. In this study, totally 20 full-sited specimens were made and tested under monotonic and cyclic loading in order to extend the usage range of grout-filled splice sleeve system. The experimental variables adopted in this study are size of reinforcing bars embedded in upper and lower part of sleeve and compressive strength of filled mortar etc. After test was performed, the results were compared and analyzed with respect to previous test of author. Following main conclusions are obtained : 1) The structural performance of splice sleeve system is improved with increasing compressive strength of filled mortar. And also it was verified that the splice sleeve system with over 700 kgf/㎠ mortar compressive strength and over 6.54 development length of reinforcing bar retains the structural performance of over A class(AIJ Criteria). 2) In the case of using different size of reinforcing bars embedded in upper and lower part of sleeve, the result show that splice sleeve matching with large sized reinforcing bar must be used. And also up to 2 level smaller size of reinforcing bar compared to large reinforcing bar embedded in sleeve can be used.

  • The seismic performance of a column splice fabricated with PJP (partial joint penetration) welds for special moment frames was experimentally evaluated in this study. The steel materials that were used for the specimens included SHN490 and SN490 steel, or the newly developed structural steel for seismic application. Fabricating the column splice with PJP welds is highly attractive from the perspective of reducing the welding cost and the construction time. PJP welds in column splices are viewed apprehensively, however, because several tests have shown that PJP welds in thick members tend to become brittle under tensile loads. The column splices in this testing program were designed for the expected plastic moment of the column that current seismic codes typically require. The design strength of partial-penetration welded joints was determined according to the 2005 AISC-LRFD Specification. Three-point loading was applied monotonically, using a universal testing machine, such thatthe column splice joints were subjected to pure tension. The test results showed that the PJP welded splices, if designed properly, can develop a strength exceeding that of the actual plastic moment of the column. The specimen made of the SM490 rolled section, however, showed a brittle fracture at the splice soon after achieving the actual plastic moment of the column. The tensile coupon test results also showed that the material properties of SM490 steel are more unpredictable. Overall, although the test data are limited, the SHN490 and SN490 steel specimens showed a superior and reliable performance.

  • A steel-plate concrete composite beam is composed of a steel plate, concrete and shear connector to combine inhomogeneous two materials. The steel plate is assembled by welding an existing composite beam. In this study, new steel-plate concrete composite beam, called a SPC Beam, was developed to reduce the shear connector and improve the workability. The SPC Beam was composed of folding steel plates and concrete, without a shear connector. The folding steel plate was assembled using high strength bolt instead of welding. To improve the workability in field construction, a hat-shaped Cap was attached to the junction with a slab. Monotonic load testing under two points was conducted under displacement control mode. The flexural strength of the specimen for positive moment and negative moment was calculated using the plastic stress distribution method. The test results showed that the flexural strength of the new SPC Beam had 80% of the strength of a complete composite beam. In addition, increasing the composite ratio was possible through clearance controls of the cap. In this study, the performance of the SPC Beam was verified through additional experiments and analyses with the cross-sectional shape and cap as variables, because the representative shape in the positive negative moment region is targeted.

  • To investigate the enhancement in strength and deformation capacities of concrete confined by FRP composites, tests under axial loads were carried out on three groups of thirty six short columns in circular section with diverse GFRP confining reinforcement. The major test variables considered include fiber content or orientation, wrap or tube type by varying the end loading condition, and continuous or discontinuous confinement depending on the presence of vortical spices between its two halves. The circumferential FRP strains at failure for different types of confinements were also investigated with emphasis. Various analytical models capable of predicting the ultimate strength and strain of the confined concrete were examined by comparing to observed results. Tests results showed that FRP wraps or tubes provide the substantial increase in strength and deformation, while partial wraps comprising the vertical discontinuities fail in an explosive manner with less increase in strength, particularly in deformation. A bilinear stress-strain response was observed throughout all tests with some variations of strain hardening. The failure hoop strains measured on the FRP surface were less than those obtained from the tensile coupons in all tests with a high degree of variation. In overall, existing predictive equations overestimated ultimate strengths and strains observed in present tests, with a much larger scatter related to the latter. For more accuracy, two simple design- oriented equations correlated with present tests are proposed. The strength equation was derived using the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, whereas the strain equation was based on entirely fitting of test data including the unconfined concrete strength as one of governing factors.
