Traditional values refer to one's attitudes or perspectives developed by negotiating with oneself, others, society, world, nature and universe, which include thoughts on what is right, desirable, and what is dos and don'ts. The purpose of this study was to investigate values which Korean people traditionally emphasized, and their changes by epochal situation focused on the Choson Era. Also, this study intended to assist in finding values and meaning which should be passed down and manifested in contemporary society based on the study results. In this context, I select some positive values in the background of the Joseon dynasty. As traditional values or ethics in Korea destroyed and distorted going through the period of Japanese colonialism, all the existing social culture and traditional culture were denied, which resulted in vanishing common value which led community for several hundred years. The loss of common value caused community destruction and collapse, and made Korean people seek to survival, success and advancement in life as suffering from severe conflict of values. Experience of hollow state of mind caused by historical and cultural severance left distorted and degenerated values to Korea people, which made them pursue false values without realizing true meaning of traditional values. The true meaning of traditional values should be universal no matter how society changes, and could be milestone to contemporary people wandering aimlessly. Realizing and reconsidering the meaning of traditional values to found comtemporary values of Korean people by reflecting on history can produce significant results beyond age-old debate about East or West, and tradition or modernity.
This article is an exploratory study on the recent growth of short-hours part-time work in Korea. The short-hours part-time work has been rapidly growing among low-educated women over sixty, particularly among bereaved or divorced women, contrary to the expectation of the government that encouraged the part-time work by means of work-family balance for working mothers or middle-aged women who experienced career interruption. The short-hours part-time jobs are concentrated in social service industry, mostly elderly care service jobs, and their working conditions are extremely poor, mostly low-wage jobs with no social insurances except for health insurance. In this study, we discuss why the short-hours part-time work has grown so fast in Korea since the mid 2000s. Using various governmental statistics, we examine the effects of the labor demand and supply situations during the time period, the legal context that is related with the exempt clause of the labor law, and the institutional context related with the government's public job creation projects for the elderly. We suggest some public policies needed to slow down the growth of the short-hours part-time jobs and to elevate their working conditions.
Modern Neo-Confucianism was formed as a school by solving the modern problems in China through accepting western philosophies with Chinese basic philosophies since New Cultural Movement. Marxism, Liberalism, and Modern Neo-Confucianism are called three representatives of Chinese modern philosophies. Since the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, Modern Neo-Confucianists have tried to keep their philosophy and cultural conservatism in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Modern Neo-Confucianism which had been prohibited before 1978 was brought again to people's attention in the middle of 1980s by their active lectures and writings. Furthermore, the study on Modern Neo-Confucianism was supported by the Chinese government in 1987. China was trying to find the way to enhance Chinese tradition and to develop China to a modern society at the same time through the study on Modern Neo-Confucianism. The purpose of Modern Neo-Confucianism is to keep Chinese tradition which was broken off, to develop China to a modern society, to control the problems caused by capitalism socially, and ultimately to strengthen socialism in China in the political aspect. The study on Modern Neo-Confucianism in the 1980s focused on introducing, organizing, and understanding Modern Neo-Confucianism as its early stage. This study was led by Marxists with their methods and viewpoints. Even though the acceptance and understanding of Modern Neo-Confucianism was limited in a short period, the study on Modern Neo-Confucianism in the 1980s propagated Modern Neo-Confucianism. Modern Neo-Confucianism also played an important role to grow the argument about the critical succession of Chinese tradition and to reconsider the fact that modernization does not mean only westernization.
It is attempted here to explain change in welfare attitudes for two decades in 10 countries with the cohort effect, especially differences in societal values between generations. It was found that for the last 20 years pro-welfare attitudes of the public has been strengthened, on which the generation has impact, more by the cohort effect than by the age effect, and that the Millennials/Y-generation are the strongest supporters for the state welfare. Value-differences between cohorts, as a background factor for the cohort effect on welfare attitudes, are clear but show a kind of linear trend from the older to the younger cohorts. As for the cohort effect on welfare attitudes, it is expected, at least for the short-term future, in the direction toward supporting the expansion of the state welfare. Korean welfare attitudes show an exceptional pattern - preferring income inequality as incentives, and at the same time, the expansion of governmental welfare responsibility, which echoes recent arguments of contradictoriness and non-class-orientedness of Korean welfare attitudes. Especially, Korean Millennials/Y-G shows this contradictory welfare attitudes the most strongly, which is unique between 10 countries in this study, implying their fierce competition is being internalized. It is expected that the contradictoriness of Korean welfare attitudes may limit its possibility to back up welfare expansion in Korea.
This paper traces the historical genealogy of the subjectivity and the silsim (實心, true mind) that appear in Jeong In-Bo's "gukhak" (國學, the national learning) thought and illuminates its characteristics. In the modern East Asian history of thought, the beginning of the emergence of subjectivity and the silsim as the main philosophical topic comes from the Neo-Confucianism of Song Dynasty in China. Cheng Yi is the first thinker to emphasize subjectivity and consciousness. Zhu Xi and Wang Yang-ming inherit the Neo-Confucian thought based on Cheng Yi's principle of subjectivity, but only show difference in methodology. In the Chosun Dynasty, Jeong Je-Doo and his School were one example of the Neo-Confucian spirit of subjectivity and the silsim. Although Jeong In-Bo (鄭寅普) belongs to Jeong Je-Doo's school of Ganghwa in the school curriculum, he has only used it methodologically since he believed that Yangming's learning is more effective in the awareness and practice of the silsim. Especially noteworthy is that the principle of subjectivity led Jeong In-Bo to follow the frame of Zhu Xi's moral theory. Jeong's claim that selfish desire (jasasim 自私心) should be controlled by a conscious mind (silsim) being aware of the right and 'ought to do' corresponds to Zhu Xi's view that the moral mind (dosim 道心) should be selected in the conflict situation between sensual desire (insim 人心) and moral consciousness so that the insim should be supervised by the dosim. Such ethics is a position to emphasize the inner motive and the sense of duty of conduct, and there is no fundamental difference in Zhu Xi and Wang Yang-ming. At least on this point, it is necessary to look at modern and contemporary Korean studies from the perspective of continuity, not discontinuity from Confucian tradition.
The purpose of this paper is to create an inter-religious dialogue between the Western Christian concept of the spirit and Eastern ch'i philosophy within the category of panentheism. The Hebrew term ruah means 'moving air' and 'wind' which derive from the particular experience of the ancient Hebrew people living in the desert. The Greek pnuema also means 'life' and 'wind' which denote the natural power. Both ruah and pneuma consist of the main idea of the spirit exploring the symbol of relationality of the divine in Western tradition. Eastern ch'i philosophy indicates a vital force for keeping the body and soul alive, which is unconscious and spontaneous. Ch'i as a vital force constitutes cosmogony and cosmology with the constant movement of yin and yang. Yin and Yang as representing earth and heaven are dynamic breaths, blending harmoniously to become all existence. The ethical implication of the inter-religious dialogue between the spirit and ch'i would be the integration and interconnection of heaven, earth, and human beings. The dialogue suggests becoming one body with nature and human community through embodying the non-dualistic spirit of life. The inter-relationality means that since all modalities of existence are made of the cosmic life, human beings are part of the divine cosmic process. This is related to degree of spirituality in the entire chain of being: rocks, trees, animals, humans, and goods represent different levels of spirituality based on the varying composition of the spirit and ch'i. All beings that internally embody with the spirit and ch'i are organically inter-connected, and they are integral part of a continuous process of transformation of life towards holistic liberation of human and nature community.
It has been difficult to logically and consistently explain about the history of Korean national flag, Taegeukgi, for the past time because the exact shape of Young Hyo Park's Taegeukgi was not known. Any meaningful study of Taegeukgi was no longer possible since the most important core key was lost in the study of Taegeukgi. In this study, I inferred the original copy of Taegeukgi used by Young Hyo Park referring to the aspect of principle of Taegeukgi based on the existing historical data such as the copy of Young Hyo Park's Taegeukgi found in the UK National Archives in 2008, the recordings shown in Shi-wha-ji-lue, the painting of Taegeukgi inserted in Sisashinbo then in Japan, the Taegeukgi painted by Gil Joon Yoo, Denny Taegeukgi, etc. As a result, I have found that Taegeukgi has been handed down in a consistent shape even if China and Japan had tried to disturb and distorted it. That is, the Taegeukgi used by Young Hyo Park was painted following the command of the King Gojong and its shape was already defined before he went to Japan. I have found that such defined shape was the 'COREA Ensign', which was used for the Treaty between Chosun and the United States. I have also found that the 'COREA Ensign' from which Young Hyo Park's Taegeukgi was originated was designed by Gyoung Seok Oh and Gyoung Soo Kim referring to the situations that time. In addition, I have found that Shi-wha-ji-lue giving the base for the existing theory of Taegeukgi designed by Young Hyo Park was partially distorted by Japan.
It was found that mixing patterns suddenly changed at an impeller rotation speed in a dished bottom vessel with dual Rushton turbines. Two isolated mixing regions like doughnuts rings generated at a low rotational speed and three isolated mixing regions generated at a higher speed. This phenomenon was observed at the mixing condition in transition area, where the power number with baffle was the same as that without baffle. We found a phenomenon in which the flow state in a dish-bottom agitation tank equipped with a two-stage Rushton turbine blade changes at a certain rotational speed. In the laminar flow region, the isolated stable donut rings were formed even when the rotational speed was changed, and no specific variation in the mixing pattern was observed. In the transition region, the two isolated thick unmixed donut rings do not change even if the rotation speed is changed in the flat bottom vessel, whereas in the dished bottom vessel, when the rotation speed is 450 rpm, the two isolated thick unmixed donut rings are changed to three isolated thin donut rings and then improved mixing. In the dished bottom vessel, in the range of Re=138~178, the isolated ring-shaped unmixed region appeared in three places and the size was also large. But in the flat bottom vessel, the isolated thick ring-shaped unmixed region appeared in two places in Re=116~176 and the size was also small. It appeared in two places, and the size was also small. The condition in which this phenomenon is observed is a transition region, and it was found that when the baffle plate is attached, the power number starts to increase compared to when the baffle plate is not present. In addition, when the mixing Reynolds number exceeded 300 and a slight turbulence was mixed in the flow state, the disconnection of these flow pattern was resolved and the mixture was completely mixed.
To improve the water quality of agricultural reservoirs, constructed wetlands are applied in many places. These are technologies that establish ecosystems and important design factors include water depth distribution, inflow and outflow, water flow distribution, hydraulic residence time, water quality treatment efficiency, aspect ratio, and the distribution of open water and covered water surfaces. For high efficiency during the operation of a constructed wetland, the design needs to be optimized and this requires consideration of the different types and length of the intake dam as well as the type and connection of wetland cells. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate and suggest factors that needs to be considered during the design and for efficient operation measures through field surveys of 23 constructed wetlands that have been established and operated in agricultural reservoirs. Results of the field investigation shows that several sites were being operated improperly due to the malfunctioning or failure of the water level sensors, sedimentation in the intake dam, and clogging of the mechanical sluice frames. In addition, it was found that as the length of the inlet channel increases, the ecological disconnection between the intake dam upstream and the wetland outlet downstream also increases and was identified as a problem. Most of the wetlands are composed of 2 to 5 cells which can result to poor hydraulic efficiency and difficulty in management if they are too large. Moreover, it was found that the flow through a small wetland can be inadequate when there are too many cells due to excessive amounts of headloss.

Seamless wireless communication network access technology enables users to guarantee service continuity. Hence, it is necessary for disaster situations in which network service may be interrupted. The Multi-path router is a technology to improve network stability and strengthen field operability, particularly in a disaster environment where network failure can occur by providing high-performance data transmission using multi-communication networks and network security by VPN-based wireless IP. In this paper, a prototype system for an MPR-based wireless communication network was proposed to improve the operation performance for disaster field investigation applications. A comparative experiment was performed on various data transmission performances with the existing single wireless communication network. In addition, another experiment was conducted by measuring the data packet transmission and receiving performance in the existing/new wireless communication system first and then assessing the UDP transmission performance in a single router environment to understand the transmission capability of the new MPR. The experimental results showed that the sending and receiving performance was improved by approximately double that of the existing single wireless communication system. The proposed prototype system is expected to allow users to share and disseminate collected on-site data more quickly and efficiently during a disaster site investigation.
