Stress Analysis of Single-Lap Adhesive Joints Considering Uncertain Material Properties (물성치의 불확실성을 고려한 단일 겹치기 이음의 응력해석)

  • This paper deals with stress analysis of single-lap adhesive joints which have uncertain material properties. Basically, material properties have a certain amount of scatter and such uncertainties can affect the performance of joints. In this paper, the convex modeling is introduced to consider such uncertainties in calculating peel and shear stress of adhesive joints and the results are compared with those from the Monte Carlo simulation. Numerical results show that stresses increase when uncertainties considered, which indicates that such uncertainties should not be ignored for estimation of structural safety. Also, the results obtained by the convex modeling and the Monte Carlo simulation show good agreement, which demonstrates the effectiveness of convex modeling.

The Torque Transmission Capacities of the Adhesive Tubular Lap Joint (접착제로 접착된 원형 겹치기이음의 토크 전달특성 연구)

  • With the wide application of fiber-reinforced composite meterial in aircraft space structures and robot arms, the design and manufacture of composite joints have become a very important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structure. In this paper, the torque transmission capacities of the adhesive tubular single lap joint and double lap joint were studied. The stress and torque transmission capacity of the adhesive joints were analyzed by the finite element method and compared to the experimental results. The torque capacity of the double lap joint was increased 2.7 times over that of the single lap joint. Also, the fatigue limit of the double lap joint was increased 16 times over that of the single lap joint.

  • This paper is designed to estimate the adhesion strength of coating layer on galvannealed steel sheet using lap shear test. The single lap shear test is the most commonly used standard test for determining the strength of medium-strength and high strength bonds. The bond strength of bonded single lap joints on subjecting the substrates to loads is determined by lap shear forces in the direction of the bonded joint. In this study, specimen for adhesion strength test was made to attach coated sheet to cold rolled sheet and were heated in temperature of 180 for 20minutes. After test, detached parts of coatings on coated sheet were observed using SEM and EDX to identify substrate and complete detachment. The tested results showed that adhesive strength of coating is unrelated to anisotropy of sheet and is difficult to be extracted using conventional theory because of fine cracks of coating layers which were created during annealing process.

Optimization of Resistance Spot Weld Condition for Single Lap Joint of Hot Stamped 22MnB5 by Taking Heating Temperature and Heating Time into Consideration (핫스템핑 공정에서 가열온도 및 유지시간을 고려한 22MnB5의 단일겹치기 저항 점용접 조건 최적화)

  • In this study, optimization of the process parameters of the resistance spot welding of a sheet of aluminum-coated boron alloyed steel, 22MnB5, used in hot stamping has been performed by a Taguchi method to increase the strength of the weld joint. The process parameters selected were current, electrode force, and weld time. The heating temperature and heating time of 22MnB5 are considered to be noise factors. It was known that the variation in the thickness of the intermetallic compound layer between the aluminum-coated layer and the substrate, which influences on the formation of nugget, was generated due to the difference of diffusion reaction according to heating conditions. From the results of spot weld experiment, the optimum weld condition was determined to be when the current, electrode force, and weld time were 8kA, 4kN, and 18 cycles, respectively. The result of a test performed to verify the optimized weld condition showed that the tensile strength of the weld joint was over 32kN, which is considerably higher than the required strength, i.e., 23kN.

Static Strength of Composite Single-lap Joints Using I-fiber Stitching Process with different Stitching Pattern and Angle (I-fiber Stitching 공법을 적용한 복합재료 Single-lap Joint의 Stitching 패턴과 각도에 따른 정적 강도 연구)

  • Laminated composite materials have excellent in-plane properties, but are vulnerable in thickness directions, making it easy to delamination when bending and torsion loads are applied. Thickness directional reinforcement methods of composite materials that delay delamination include Z-pinning, Stitching, Tufting, etc., and typically Z-pinning and Stitching method are commonly used. The Z-pinning is reinforcement method by inserting metal or carbon pin in the thickness direction of prepreg, and the conventional stitching process is a method of reinforcing the mechanical properties in the thickness direction by intersecting the upper and lower fibers on the preform. In this paper, I-fiber stitching method, which complement and improve weakness of Z-pinning and Stitching method, was proposed, and the static strength of composite single-lap joints using I-fiber stitching process were evaluated. The single-lap joints were fabricated by a co-curing method using an autoclave vacuum bag process. The thickness of the composite adherend was fixed, and 5 types of specimens were manufactured with varying the stitching pattern (5×5, 7×7) and angle (0°, 45°). From the test, the failure load of the specimen reinforced by the I-fiber stitching process was increased by up to 143% compared to that of specimen without reinforcement.

  • Composite lap joints have been extensively used due to their excellent properties and the demand for light structures. However, due to the weak mechanical properties in the thickness direction, the lap joint is easily fractured. various reinforcement methods that delay fracture by dispersing stress concentration have been applied to overcome this problem, such as z-pinning and conventional stitching. The Z-pinning is reinforcement method by inserting metal or carbon pin in the thickness direction of prepreg, and the conventional stitching process is a method of reinforcing the mechanical properties in the thickness direction by intersecting the upper and lower fibers on the preform. I-fiber stitching method is a promising technology that combines the advantages of both z-pinning and the conventional stitching. In this paper, the static and fatigue strengths of the single-lap joints reinforced by the I-fiber stitching process were evaluated. The single-lap joints were fabricated by a co-curing method using an autoclave vacuum bag process and I-fiber reinforcing effects were evaluated according to adherend thickness and stitching angle. From the experiments, the thinner the composite joint specimen, the higher the I-fiber reinforcement effect, and Ifiber stitched single lap joints showed a 52% improvement in failure strength and 118% improvement in fatigue strength.
