Study on the Restoration of Ancient Smelting and Smithing Technologies in the Jungwon Area (재현실험을 통한 중원지역 고대 제련-단야기술의 공정별 특성 연구)

  • Studies on ancient ironmaking technologies are primarily based on archaeological surveys and scientific analysis data, and technological systems are examined by comparing the results of restorative experiments. In this study, to examine the ancient iron production technologies such as smelting and smithing in the Jungwon area, a restoration experiment was conducted based on archaeological data, and the iron and slag, etc. produced in the experiment were analyzed. Further, the changes in physicochemical properties due to the smelting of the raw material, specifically, iron ore were determined, and the smithing process, which involves fabrication of ironwares, was analyzed along with the characteristics of each step. In the case of smelting, increasing recovery rates and production of high-quality primary iron material were important for the following processes. For the iron bars produced through the smithing process, it was found that quality improvements made by reducing physical defects such as inclusions or gas holes were more important than the composition of the iron itself. The study also yielded comparative study data for various byproducts, such as smithing slag, which could be utilized in other ironmaking technology studies.

  • Studies on ancient iron production technologies still have challenges to overcome, although there have been many results that have enabled us to understand these old technologies. The purpose of this study is to propose a suitable temperature condition for smelting experiments. The target for reconstruction is a smelting-smithing process in the ancient Jungwon area, and the experiment was designed on the basis of published research, such as archaeological evidence. Experiment A was performed at a low temperature to produce low-carbon iron, while Experiment B was conducted at a relatively high temperature to synthesize high-carbon iron. In addition, the low-carbon iron proved to be suitable for the smithing process. Moreover, aspects such as the microstructure and chemical composition of the slag and the surface condition of the furnace wall showed that the low-temperature smelting process was closer to the ancient method. It is important to mention the premise that the reconstruction of ancient technology can be achieved when the results of an experiment replicate the conditions of a real site. The results show that direct smelting, which produces low-carbon iron bloom under a low-temperature condition, should be the subject of smelting experiments concerning the iron production technologies of the ancient Jungwon area.

Characteristics of Gwanbuk-ri remains, Buyeo, inferred from the analysis of iron artifacts from District "Na" (부여 관북리 유적 "나" 지구 출토 제철유물의 분석을 통한 제철유적의 성격 추론)

  • In this research, the chemical composition of the iron artifacts from the late 6th-century to early 7thcentury Baekje remains in Gwanbuk-ri, Buyeo, specifically of the nine iron artifacts including slags, furnace walls and ingot iron excavated in the District "Na", were examined by observing their chemical compounds and microstructures. As a result, GB1 and GB6 were determined to be proto-reduction lumps whereas GB2, GB3, GB4 and GB5 were determined to be tempered slags, respectively. Also, he furnace wall GB7 were containing mullite and cristobalite, which are high temperature index minerals, The extrusion temperature was found out to be about $1200{\sim}1300^{\circ}C$, and it is most likely that the smelting temperature in the furnace was in that temperature range. GB8 ingot iron was determined to be a forged ironware. This ingot iron was an intermediary product for making ironware and its nonmetallic inclusions displayed similar microstructure and contents compared to the forged iron. Because of the existence of proto-reduction lumps and forged iron, the iron making facility located in District "Na" most likely had a small-scale iron making facility that handled iron bloom smelting and refining processes.

A Comparative Study on the Surface Patterns Applied to the Traditional Refining and Forge Welding Process Using Iron (철을 이용한 전통 정련·단접 과정 적용 소재별 표면무늬 금속학적 비교 연구)

  • This research has analyzed SI, the traditional steel, and SIHS(SI + HS), SICS(SI + CS), and SINiS(SI + NiS), the materials that were produced through welding and reprocessing three modern steel- HS, CS, and NiS- that have different carbon content. The purpose of the analyzation was to improve the definition of the multi-layered pattern that appears in the forging process. In observing modified structures on the commissures of three modern steel that have different carbon component to the SI, SINiS produced the most significant multi-layered pattern as well as the excellent welding quality. The excellent welding quality was due to the content of nickel which helped the forge welding process with other materials. There was no significant difference in crystal grain per materials, and SICS showed the highest hardness. At the measurement of EPMA for commissures of the materials, SINiS showed the highest definition of the multi-layered pattern due to the nickel and carbon content. The results above showed that the carbon steel with nickel content is the best material for the most definite multi-layered pattern, expressed from the multi-layered structure which is a characteristic of traditional forge welding technology. It is expected that the result of this research can be utilized as the technical data in further researches regarding the relics excavated from ancient welding process and their multi-layered structure and patterns.

Forging Process Technology as Observed in the Microstructure of a Hammer Scale Excavated from the Naju Bogam-ri Remains (나주 복암리 유적 출토 단조박편의 미세조직을 통한 단야 공정 기술체계 연구)

  • The microstructure of a hammer scale excavated from the Bogam-ri was examined in an effort to understand the iron technologies applied in the manufacturing of an iron forging process technology. The microstructures of oxide layer in the hammer scale were found to have crucial information about the ancient iron forging process treatment. The microstructure observed in the hammer scale can be distinguished by the forging process. First, the microstructure of the oxide layer in the hammer scale created by the forging process is Wstite (FeO) in the form of leaves. Latterly, the microstructure of the $W{\ddot{u}}stite$(FeO) in the hammer scale is observed to be in the form of a flat shape formed by a repeating forging process.

Metallic Structure of Iron Relics of Chosun Dynasty Excavated from Gangsun Tower, Chengpyeong Temple (청평사 강선루 출토 조선시대 철제유물의 금속조직에 대하여)

  • In the course of examining the micro structure of Iron chisel and Iron arrowhead, a relics of the 16th or 17th of Chosun Dynasty unearthed at near Gangsun-tower, Chengpyeong temple. Collected un-eroded samples from the relics were looked into the metallic structure through optical metallography. Non-metallic inclusions were-analysed by SEM and EDS. The micro structure examination and SEM-SDS analysis revealed that Iron chisel and Iron arrowhead had been produced from the sponge iron close to pure iron made by low temperature reducing in a solid and then the surface carbon content was increased by carburizing treatment. It was also found that Iron chisel had been hardened through the repetitive processes of quench hardening and heat treatment, after increasing carbon content to a certain level. Up to now, there have been a number of studies in the domestic academia which were studied mainly on the structure of metallic relics in the period of the Three Kingdoms or before. Although this research was limited in type and number of the relics, it turned out to be interesting in that it revealed the 16th or 17th century way of processing iron, even in fragments. It is thought to be fruitful that iron had been made even in the Chosun Dynasty from the sponge iron.

Salinity Content in Soil on Chemical Composition and Productivity of Rice in Reclaimed Saline Paddy Field (토양의 염분농도 차이가 벼의 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • 대부분의 신 간척지 논은 점토 함량이 적은 반면 미사 함량이 많고 토양 콜로이드의 분산제 역할을 하는 Na함량이 높기 때문에 이러한 토양은 입단화가 저해되고 투수성이 불량해 진다. 이러한 투수와 더불어 다량의 SiO$_2$, F$_2$, MR, MgO 등이 하층으로 용출되어 투수성과 통기성을 저하시키고 간척지 토양의 토양 물리화학적 불량에 의한 저수확답의 원인의 되어 벼의 재배가 어렵고 생산성이 낮아 경제성을 기대하기 어렵다. (김, 1992 : 고건, 1988 ;단야, 1983 ; 전중등, 1974). 따라서 본 실험에서는 토양의 염분농도차이가 토양화학성과 수량에 미치는 영향을 검토하여 간척지 토양의 경제성을 높이는데 기초자료로 활용코자 시험한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 출수기는 0.1%의 염분농도 토양은 8월15일, 0.4%의 염분농도 토양은 8월 20일, 0.8%의 염분 농도 토양은 8월 25일로서 0.1%의 염분농도 토양이 가장 빨랐다. 2. 쌀수량은 토양의 염분농도가 0.1%로 낮은 토양이 599kg/10a로 가장 많았고, 다음으로는 0,4%의 염분농도 토양이 568kg/10a이었고 0.8%의 염분농도 토양은 446kg/10a로 가장 낮았으며 쌀수량 구성요소 역시 같은 경향으로 0.1%의 염분농도 토양에서 가장 우수하였고 다음으로는 0.4%, 0.8%순으로 나타났었다. 3. 쌀수량과 토양의 이화학적 특성간의 상관에서는 pH와는 부의 상관, 유기물, 인산, 질소, 가리, 칼슘, 마그네슘의 함량간에는 정의상관이있다. 4. 전남광양만 간척지에서 쌀수량과 수량 구성요소면에서 볼때에 적합한 토양의 염분농도는 0.1%이라고 사료된다.

The Study on Material Characteristics of Slags Excavated from Iron Making Site (제철 유적 출토 철재(鐵滓)의 재료학적 특성 연구)

  • The slag excavated from Gyesil-ri in Gongju, Yeonje-ri in Cheongwon and Beopcheonsaji (temple) site in Wonju are analyzed by X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer, metallurgical microscope, SEM-EDS etc., for chemical composition and microstructure to figure out the raw material and the iron manufacturing technique. First of all, as a result of principal component analysis, the total Fe-content of slag from Gyesil-ri is 39 to 44% and the modified rate is 15 to 21%, which is common in ancient iron slag. Yeonje-ri site is found the ancient iron-smelting furnace. The total Fe-content of slag from Yeonje-ri is 41 to 43% and modified rate is 18~30%, which is also the general value in the ancient slag. However only slag is excavated in the residential area at Beopcheonsaji site and there is no iron making relic. In addition, the result of principal component analysis contains that the total Fe-content of Beopcheonsaji site is 52 to 57%, and modified rate is 8 to 14%. It shows that the total Fe-content of Beopcheonsaji site is higher than relic from Gyesil-ri and Yeonje-ri and the modified rate is lower than other sites. This results mean that recollecting rate of Fe in Beopcheonsaji site is lower than other sites. Also, as a result of minor elements analysis, the slag from Gyesil-ri has the higher level of Ti, V and Zr than other sites and the microstructure are observed as magnetite and ulvospinel, so that the raw material of slag is iron sand. But the slag from Yeonje-ri and Beopcheonsaji site are identified to use iron ore. As a result of microstructure observation, fayalite, gray-columnar crystal, is found in the slag from Yeonje-ri and big wustite as main phase is observed in the slag from Beopcheonsaji site. This study show that the slag from Yeonje-ri is made of smelt ash produced during smelting works and the slag from Beopcheonsaji site is made of forging ash produced during forging work concerning the excavated location and the microstructure.

Examination of Smelting and Smithing Slags Excavated from the Iron Production Site of the Nogye Village (노계마을 제철유적 출토유물의 자연과학적 분석연구)

  • The purpose of the present study is to examine the objects excavated from the archaeological site of the Nogye Village in terms of their relationships with the iron production facilities such as 1ho smithing hearth and 2ho smelting furnace. 32 samples including slags, iron ores, and wall were analyzed to identify the mineralogical and chemical characterization. In addition, in the case of the 1ho smithing hearth slag, differing points of the cross-section were analyzed to examine its formation in depth. The analysis results suggest that the slags from the each site adjacent to the 1ho smithing hearth and 2ho furnace are related to smithing and smelting process respectively. Furthermore, it is possible to draw some conclusions that the aspects of the increased contents of nonferrous elements such as CaO in the slags in comparison with those of the iron ores are due to various factors such as charcoal ash and analytical reasons rather than an addition of CaO as flux.

An experimental archaeological study on the Baekjae iron smelting furnace and its production process (백제 제철로 및 제철기술의 복원을 위한 실험 고고학적 연구)

  • A Jincheon Seokjangri B23 furnace was reconstructed and iron smelting experiment was performed to investigate an ancient Baekjae iron production process. The work mainly described in this paper is the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ experiments among the several experiments carried out at Jungwon National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage. Iron ore(magnetite) and oak charcoal were used as a source and a foot bellow was used for air supply. Common results of the experiments are masses of iron, slag and charcoal formed in the furnace. Most iron lumps were formed nearby the tuyere rather than the area of tapping hole. Metallographic and chemical analysis shows that the iron lumps can be used for either forge or cast depending on their carbon content. Low Fe content and glassy texture of the inner slags suggest that the operation environment was quite reducing. Based on the results of the iron smelting experiments, measurements and analysis, various information was obtained regarding physical-chemical and metallurgical processes of the ancient iron smelting process. It is firmly believed that its undisclosed contents can be revealed more in depth with continual reconstitution experiments.
