  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of hand tapping on the accuracy and the fluency of speech production in children with speech sound disorder(SSD) and their typically developing peers(TD). Methods : The study subjects were 15 SSD children and 15 TD children aged 4, 5, and 6 years of age. Subjects were asked to give a picture name without hand tapping in the first experimental condition, and with hand tapping in the second experiment condition. Results : The results showed that hand tapping significantly increased disfluency in TD, whereas in SSD. it did not affect the accuracy or fluency of speech production. In addition, TD demonstrated a significant positive correlation with the changes of accuracy and disfluency due to hand tapping, whereas SSD had no correlation. Conclusion : We discussed the possibility that hand tapping could serve as an obstacle distracting attention from SSD and TD, acting as a motor gesture to facilitate phonological processing when facing the difficulty in lexical retrieval for SSD.

  • This paper proposes a human mouse system that replaces mouse input by human hand movement. As the resolution of monitors increases, it is not quite possible, due to the resolution difference between web cameras and monitors, to place the cursor in the entire range of a monitor by simply moving the pointer which recognizes the position of the hand from the web camera. In this regard, we propose an effective method of placing the position of the mouse, without repeating the returning hand movements, in the corners of the monitor in which the user wants it to be. We also proposes the recognition method of finger movements in terms of using thumb and index finger. The measurement that we conducted shows the successful recognition rate of 97% that corroborates the effectiveness of our method.

  • Various types of assistive devices have been developed for upper limb amputees over the years, with myoelectric prosthesis particularly aimed at improving user convenience by enabling a range of hand gestures beyond simple grasping, tailored to the size and shape of objects. In this study, we developed a five-finger myoelectric prosthesis mimicking human hand size and finger movements, utilizing motor and worm gear mechanisms for stable and independent operation. Based on this, we designed a control system for independent finger control through electromyographic signal input, proposed a state transition-based hand gesture conversion algorithm by selecting representative eight hand gestures and defining conversion condition parameters. We introduced training and usability evaluation methods, and conducted usability assessments among upper limb amputees using dedicated tools, confirming the potential for commercial application of the algorithm and observing adaptive capabilities and high performance through iterative evaluations.

  • Jump rope has two motions. It starts as hand motion and ends as jump motion. Therefore, two motions should be considered together to detect rotations accurately. But previous researches only consider one of the two motions as in push-up, sit-up, lift dumbbells etc, which results in inaccurate detection of rotations. In this paper, detection of rotation in jump rope using two motions through 6-axis accelerometer gyro sensor is proposed. Jump motion is detected using accelerometer sensor and hand motion is detected using gyro sensor. Also start point and end point of jump rope is detected using magnitude and standard deviation of accelerometer and gyro sensor values. The count of rotation is detected using y-axis of gyro sensor value. Y-axis of gyro sensor value indicate hand motion of jump rope motion. The usefulness of the proposed method is confirmed through experimental results.
