  • Controller area network (CAN) was designed for multiplexing communication between electronic control units (ECUs) in vehicles and thus for decreasing the overall wire harness. The increasing number of ECUs causes the CAN bus overloaded and consequently the error probability of data transmission increases. Since the time duration for the data transmission is proportional to CAN frame length, it is desirable to reduce the frame length. In this paper, a CAN message compression method is proposed using Data Length Code (DLC) and compression area selection algorithm to reduce the CAN frame length and the error probability during the transmission of CAN messages. By the proposed method, it is not needed to predict the maximum value of the difference in successive CAN messages as opposed to other compression methods. Also, by the use of DLC, we can determine whether the received CAN message has been compressed or not without using two ID's as in conventional methods. By simulations using actual CAN data, it is shown that the CAN transmission data is reduced up to 52 % by the proposed method, compared with conventional methods. By using an embedded test board, it is shown that 64bit EMS CAN data compression can be performed within 0.16ms and consequently the proposed algorithm can be used in automobile applications without any problem.

  • This study was conducted to develop a reservoir modelling workflow to reproduce the heterogeneous distribution of effective permeability that impacts on the performance of SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage), the in-situ bitumen recovery technique in the Athabasca Oil Sands. Lithologic facies distribution is the main cause of the heterogeneity in bitumen reservoirs in the study area. The target formation consists of sand with mudstone facies in a fluvial-to-estuary channel system, where the mudstone interrupts fluid flow and reduces effective permeability. In this study, the lithologic facies is classified into three classes having different characteristics of effective permeability, depending on the shapes of mudstones. The reservoir modelling workflow of this study consists of two main modules; facies modelling and permeability modelling. The facies modelling provides an identification of the three lithologic facies, using a stochastic approach, which mainly control the effective permeability. The permeability modelling populates mudstone volume fraction first, then transforms it into effective permeability. A series of flow simulations applied to mini-models of the lithologic facies obtains the transformation functions of the mudstone volume fraction into the effective permeability. Seismic data contribute to the facies modelling via providing prior probability of facies, which is incorporated in the facies models by geostatistical techniques. In particular, this study employs a probabilistic neural network utilising multiple seismic attributes in facies prediction that improves the prior probability of facies. The result of using the improved prior probability in facies modelling is compared to the conventional method using a single seismic attribute to demonstrate the improvement in the facies discrimination. Using P-wave velocity in combination with density in the multiple seismic attributes is the essence of the improved facies discrimination. This paper also discusses sand matrix porosity that makes P-wave velocity differ between the different facies in the study area, where the sand matrix porosity is uniquely evaluated using log-derived porosity, P-wave velocity and photographically-predicted mudstone volume.

  • In this paper, a parallel Optimal Best-First search Branch-and-Bound(B&B) algorithm(pobs) is designed and evaluated for MIN-based multiprocessor systems. The proposed algorithm decomposes a problem into G subproblems, where each subproblem is processed on a group of P processors. Each processor group uses tile sub-Global Best-First search technique to find a local solution. The local solutions are broadcasted through the network to compute the global solution. This broadcast provides not only the comparison of G local solutions but also the load balancing among the processor groups. A performance analysis is then conducted to estimate the speed-up of the proposed parallel B&B algorithm. The analytical model is developed based on the probabilistic properties of the B&B algorithm. It considers both the computation time and communication overheads to evaluate the realistic performance of the algorithm under the parallel processing environment. In order to validate the proposed evaluation model, the simulation of the parallel B&B algorithm on a MIN-based system is carried out at the same time. The results from both analysis and simulation match closely. It is also shown that the proposed Optimal Best-First search B&B algorithm performs better than other reported schemes with its various advantageous features such as: less subproblem evaluations, prefer load balancing, and limited scope of remote communication.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel control signaling protocol that efficiently controls connection setup and increases the utilization of network resources. The proposed protocol, Separated Control Signaling Protocol(SCSP), separates bearer control from call control lot WDM optical networks. The main function of call control is to check the availability of network resources such as wavelengths and receivers at destination node. Bearer control is to reserve and assign wavelengths. The signaling architecture of this protocol consists of call controller and hearer controller The call controller handles call setup and release, activates the beater controller, and manages the status of call and bearer. The bearer controller reserves wavelengths, sets up bearer, tears down bearer. and notifies the status of beater to call controller. The state transition diagrams of each controller are designed. Using control messages and related primitives, the information flows for call setup and bearer setup, hearer teardown and call release, and reaction for setup failures are described to evaluate the performance. The simulation results show that the separated control signaling protocol is superior to conventional one in terms of call blocking probability and resource utilization.
