  • In order to monitor the levels of pesticides in environment-friendly stalk and stem vegetables and leafy vegetables selling at markets in Korea. A total of 637 (395 organic agricultural products, 242 pesticide-free agricultural products) samples of 21 stalk and stem vegetables and leafy vegetables were collected twice from markets in July and August 2010 in Korea. Pesticide residues in samples were analyzed by multiresidue method for 240 pesticides using GC-ECD/NPD and HPLC-DAD/FLD. The suspected-pesticides were confirmed with a GC-MSD. As a result of analysis, six pesticides were detected from eight samples, representing a detection rate of 1.3% and amounts of pesticide residues in samples were as follows: alachlor 0.043, chlorfenapyr 0.022-0.324, diazinon 0.024, dicofol 0.009-0.138, dithiopyr 0.008, metolachlor 0.025 mg/kg. Their residue levels were below the MRLs. Estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of the pesticides detected from stalk and stem vegetables and leafy vegetables were less than 25% of their acceptable daily intakes (ADIs), representing that residue levels of the pesticides detected were evaluated as safe for consumption. However, five samples containing pesticide residues were unsuitable environment-friendly products because of pesticides detected more than their 10% MRLs in organic and pesticide-free agricultural products.

  • The proficiency testing for the residue laboratories of pesticide registration was conducted in order to improve the reliability and the ability for pesticide residue analysis. On November 2012 the testing was carried out using the soil collected and kept as the moistened state for five years, which was expected to very low residue levels of pesticides. The soil was fortified with azoxystrobin, imidacloprid and methabenzthiazuron in a manner similar to prepare soil samples for indoor soil degradation test, and then sub-samples were prepared for the distribution to participants. Some of them were randomly selected for confirm of homogeneity and to ensure the stability of samples at room temperature. Samples were consisted of two soils treated as different levels, one of which was used to the assessment and another used to confirm. In addition, provided three standard solutions, respectively concentration of 10 mg/L, and untreated soil. Forty eight institutions submitted results. The medians of results were used as the assigned values for pesticide residues. Fitness for purpose standard deviation of proficiency test was calculated by applying 20% RSD as the coefficient of variation allowed in the soil residue test. Z-score was applied for evaluation of individual pesticides, and the average of the absolute value of the Z-score for the overall assessment of pesticides. Laboratories evaluated the absolute value of the Z-score less than 2 to fit the case of azoxystrobin were 48, imidacloprid and methabenzthiazuron 46.

  • In this study, 195 pesticide residues in fruit samples (n=150) at local markets in Chungcheongnam-do Chungnam, Korea were monitored using a multi-residue method combined with GC-MS/MS and LCMS/MS. Among 150 fruit samples, 40 types of pesticides were detected in 63 samples and the detection rate was 42.0%. However, the amounts were below the maximum residue limit (MRL). Detection rates for pesticides in each thpe of fruit were as follows ; citrus fruits (55.2%), pome fruits (41.3%), berries (38.7%) and stone fruits (36.0%). Although the sample size was small (n=2), pesticide residues were not detected in tropical fruits. Occurrences of detection of pesticide residues in apple showed the highest level, and mainly, insecticides were detected most frequently. The most commonly detected pesticides residues were bifenthrin (21), pyraclostrobin (17), novaluron (13), boscalid (10), chlorfenapyr (9), trifloxystrobin (9), furathiocarb (9), acetamiprid (8) and chlorpyrifos (8). Five types of residual pesticides (bifenthrin, chlorfenapyr, deltamethrin, fenpropathrin and fenvalerate) were detected in quince, and out of these five, fenpropathrin exceeded the MRL based on the Positive List System (PLS). These results suggested that pesticide residues in fruit samples should be continuously monitored, although residue levels in 63 other fruit samples were evaluated as being within a safe level.

  • The characteristics of pesticide residues by multiresidue analysis method using GC, HPLC and GC-MSD were examined for 18,069 numbers of 91 kinds of vegetables in Seoul from 2007 to 2009. Detection rates of pesticide residues were 11.2% in 2007, 8.5% in 2008 and 12.0% in 2009, respectively, and the excess rates of Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) showed a declining tendency as 4.6% in 2007, 2.8% in 2008 and 2.1% in 2009, respectively. The pesticides exceeding MRLs were 43 ingredients in 2007, 30 ingredients in 2008 and 36 ingredients in 2009, respectively. The frequencies of pesticides exceeding MRLs were 71 of azoxystrobin in 2007, 29 of procymidone in 2008, 24 of endosulfan in 2009, respectively. The excess rate of mustard green for MRLs in comparison with sample numbers was the highest among vegetables analyzed more than 10 cases each year. As a result of comparing annually pesticide residues about pesticide ingredients showed high frequency rates for pesticide detection, there was a statistical significance for the detection quantities of diazinon, endosulfan, paclobutrazol and procymidone.

  • In this study, the optimum conditions for the LPME (liquid phase microextraction) were investigated to overcome several shortcomings of traditional liquid-liquid extraction method. The LPME, which is automatic and dynamic, was used to analyze the five pesticides (dementon-S-methyl, diazinon, parathion, fenitrothion, EPN) extracted from vegetable, and HP 6890 GC/NPD was used as an analytic instrument. It was possible to optimize the extraction condition using the automatic LPME. The optimum extraction rate was obtained at pH 3.0 and $100{\mu}g/mL$ of salt concentration and standard curve showed linearity with over $R^2=0.9921$ in the range of $0.2{\sim}10{\mu}g/g$. The relative standard deviations were 7.7%, 9.8%, 7.8%, 9.7% and 8.2% in the $5.0{\mu}g/g$ concentration of dementon-S-methyl, diazinon, parathion, fenitrothion and EPN, respectively. The acquired accuracies were satisfactory showing 12.7%, 7.8%, 10.4%, -6.7% and -0.7% for dementon-S-methyl, diazinon, parathion, fenitrothion and EPN respectively.
