• Although the incidence of tuberculosis has been decreased, it is still an important community acquired infectious disease in the world. Miliary or disseminated tuberculosis occurs from the inadequacy of host defense in controling tuberculous infection. Generally, brain parenchyme has been considered to be a rare involving organ than other organs or meninges in miliary tuberculosis. However it has been proving that the brain parenchyme is commonly involved organ in miliary tuberculosis even without neurological manifestations. We report a case of 8 yr-old male patient, who was diagnosed as having an miliary tuberculosis with multiple tuberculoma throughout the brain. The tuberculous lesions of lung and brain were nearly cleared within 3 months with anti-tuberculous therapy. With a reveiw of related literatures, we suggest that the patients with miliary tuberculosis should be evaluateded about brain involvement.

  • Many disorders and abnormalities are accompanied by cavitary lesoin of the lung and one of the most common causes of cavitary lung disease are primary and metastatic lung neoplasms. but cavitary formation of primary lung cancer is not frequent and cavitary or cystic pulmonary metastases of this is also rare. We report a case of cavitary pulmonry metastases of primary lung cancer proven by bronchoscopic biopsy and chest CT. The patients was 60 year-old heavy smoker who had no known underlying lung diseases 7 years ago and complained chronic cough. The chest CT showed primary lung cancer in right low lobe with multiple cavitary or cystic metastases in both lungs and multiple lymphatic metastases.

  • Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is an autosomal dominant disorder that is characterized by cutaneous lesions, seizures, mental retardation and hamartomas in various organs including the skin, kidney and brain. Pulmonary involvement is extremely rare, and occurs in approximately 0.1 to 1% of TS cases. Recent reports have indicated multiple micronodular pneumocyte hyperplasia (MMPH) as another rare form of pulmonary involvement of tuberous sclerosis. We report a case of a 35 year-old-male patient who had no pulmonary symptoms but showed multinodular pulmonary shadows on his chest CT scan. The patient was finally diagnosed with TS with MMPH of the lung. MMPH does not appear to have any malignant potential but the clinical significance of MMPH in TS patients is unknown.

  • Duplication of chromosome 12p has been rarely reported and are thought to be associated with congenital malformations and impaired development. We report a baby boy born with multiple dysmorphic features and congenital malformations. His karyotype was 46,XY, add(12)(p13.3). He has suffered from intrauterine growth restriction at birth. He showed abnormal cranio-facial findings such as microcephaly, hypognathia, clepft palate and low set ear. He presented with absence of uvula, micropenis and rocker bottom features of both feet, congenital heart disease, poor corticomedullary differentiation of kidney, and sensorineuronal hearing loss. We have been follow up him for seizure disorder and delayed development at out patient department.

  • The purposes of this research are twofold; 1) to verify spatial differences of tectonic movement using the spatial distribution of earthquakes, and 2) to infer mechanisms that generate spatial accumulation patterns of earthquakes in the Korean Peninsula. The first part of this sequential paper (Park, 2007) argues that the Korean Peninsula consists of four geostructural regions in which tectonic deformation and consequent geomorphological development patterns are different from each other Since this conclusion has been made by terrain analyses alone, it is necessary to verify this suggestion using other independent geophysical data. Because earthquakes are results of movement and deformation of land masses moving in different directions, the distribution of earthquake epicenters may be used to identify the direction and rates of land mass movement. This paper first analysed the spatial distribution of earthquakes using spatial statistics, and then results were compared with the spatial arrangement of geostructural regions. The spatial distribution of earthquakes in the Korean Peninsula can be summarized as the followings; firstly, the intensity of earthquakes shows only weak spatial dependency, and shows large difference even at adjacent regions. Secondly, the epicenter distribution has a clear spatial accumulation pattern, even though the intensity of earthquake shows a random pattern. Thirdly, the high density area of earthquakes shows a clear 'L' shape, passing through Pyeongannam-do, centered at Pyeongyang, and Hwanghae-do, Seosan and Pohang. The correlation coefficient between the density of earthquakes and distance from geostructral region boundaries is much higher than those between the density of fault lines and distance from tectonic division boundaries. Since fault lines and tectonic divisions in the Korean Peninsula are the results of long-term geological development, there is an apparent scale discrepancy to find significant correlations with earthquakes. This result verifies the research hypothesis that the Korean Peninsula is divided into four geostructral regions in which each has its own moving direction and spatial deformation characteristics. The existence of geostructural regions is also supported by the movement parrerns of land masses estimated from the GPS measurements. This conclusion is expected to provide a new perspective to understand the geomorphological developments and the earthquake occurrences in the Korean Peninsula.

  • The basal cell nevus syndrome is also known as the Gorlin-Goltz syndrom. It is a dominant autosomal disorder which is characterized by keratocystic odontogenic tumors in the jaw, skeletal abnormalities, and multiple basal cell nevi carcinomas. This study reports an 11-year-old boy with multiple odontogenic keratocysts in the jaw, hypertelorism, and frontal bossing. When a young patient has cystic lesions with an impacted permanent teeth, it is important to preserve the teeth. For a growing patient with impacted permanent teeth, a more conservative method is suggested, which will enable the preservation the permanent teeth in Gorlin-Goltz syndrome.

  • To find toxic components in Korean higher fungi, the carpophores of Naematoloma fasciculare which had caused several cases of lethal intoxication were examined for toxicity. The components of high molecular weight were separated by ethanol precipitation and dialysis from the aqueous extract of the carpophores. After the components were freeze-dried, a brown powder was obtained. When a dose of 60mg/kg of this macromolecular fraction was intraperitoneally injected into mice, the mice began to die in six days and a half of them died within seven days. This toxic component was named nematoxin after the genus name of the mushroom.
