Co-simulation of MultiBody Dynamics and Plenteous Sphere of Contacted Particles Using NVIDIA GPGPU (NVIDIA 의 GPGPU 를 이용한 수 많은 구형 접촉 입자가 포함된 다물체 동역학 해석)

  • In this study, a dynamic simulation model that considers many spherical particles and multibody dynamics (MBD) entities is developed. Plenteous spherical particles are solved using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) technique and simulated on a GPU board in a PC. A fast algorithm is used to calculate the Hertzian contact forces between many spherical particles, and NVIDIA CUDA is used to increase the calculation speed. The explicit integration method is applied to solve the many spheres. MBD entities are simulated by recursive formulation. Constraints are reduced by recursive formulation, and the implicit generalized alpha method is applied to solve the dynamic model. A new algorithm is developed to simulate the DEM and MBD models simultaneously. As a numerical example, a truck car model and gear model are developed. The results show that the proposed algorithm using a general-purpose GPU in a PC has many advantages.

Development of Small Manipulator Platform for Composite Structure Repair (복합재 구조물 유지보수를 위한 소형 매니퓰레이터 플랫폼 개발)

  • In this paper, kinematic design and multi-body dynamics analysis were conducted to develop a small manipulator platform for automating the maintenance of structures made of composite materials. To design manipulator kinematically, the existing composite repair process was considered. The 3D design was conducted after selecting the basic specifications of manipulator and end-effecter in consideration of the patch lamination process for repair. Then, variables necessary for simulation and control were generated in MATLAB through inverse kinematic analysis. To evaluate the structural stability of platform, multibody dynamics analysis was conducted using Altair Inspire and Optistruct. Based on the simulation conducted in Inspire, multibody dynamics analysis was conducted in Optistruct, and structural stability was verified through the results of maximum displacement and Von-Mises stress over time. To verify the design, manufacturing and controlling of platform were conducted and compared with the simulation. It was confirmed that the actual repair process path and the simulation showed a good agreement.

  • A wind turbine simulation program for the coupled dynamics of aerodynamics, elasticity, multi-body dynamics and controls of turbine is newly developed by combining an aero-elastic code and a multi-body dynamics code. The aero-elastic code, based on the blade momentum theory and generalized dynamic wake theory, is developed by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory, USA). The multi-body dynamics code is commercial one which is capable of accounting for geometric nonlinearity and twist deflection. A turbulent wind load case is simulated for the NREL 5-MW baseline wind turbine model by the developed program and FAST. As a result, the two results agree well enough to verify the reliability of the developed program.

Development of a Component Based Helicopter Simulation Program (요소 기반의 헬리콥터 시뮬레이션 프로그램 개발)

  • Typical helicopter simulation programs rely on differential equations of a closed form. However, since these equations are derived using various assumptions, their usefulness is limited to small flight regions and specific model types. This paper presents a component based rotorcraft simulation program. The program adopts methods of multi-body dynamics and is written in an object-oriented programming language. The program was validated using an AH-1G helicopter simulation. The trim results are well matched with flight test data. It is also shown that program is capable of running in real-time on a desktop computer.

Multibody Dynamic Model and Deployment Analysis of Mesh Antennas (메쉬 안테나의 전개 구조물 설계 및 다물체 동역학 해석)

  • The purpose of this paper was to understand the dynamics of deployment of large mesh antennas, and to provide a numerical method for determining the dynamic stiffness and the driving forces for the design. The deployment structure was numerically modeled using the frame elements. The eigenvalue analysis was demonstrated, with respect to the folded and unfolded configurations of the antenna. A multibody dynamic model was formulated with Kane's equation, and simulated using the pseudo upper triangular decomposition (PUTD) method for resolving the constrained problem. Based on the multibody model, the kinetics of the deployment, the motor driving forces, and the feasibility of the designed deployment structure were investigated.

  • ECCOMAS Thematic Conference Multibody 2003 was held at IST (Instituto Superior Technico), Lisbon, Portugal from July 1 to July 4. 2003. And MBDV(Multibody Dynamics and Vibration) in the 2003 ASME DETC was held at Chicago, U.S.A. from September 2 to September 6. In this paper, the presented papers in these conferences were reviewed and the trends in the multibody dynamics are summarized. The session titles in these conferences include Flexible Multibody Dynamics, Vehicle Dynamics, Contact, Biomechanics, Real-time Challenges, Spatial manipulator and Control, Multidisciplinary Applications, and Advanced Education. The poster session was also organized for more discussions in the Multibody2003 conference.

Optimization of the Cam Profile of a Vacuum Circuit Breaker by Using Multibody Dynamics Techniques (다물체동역학기법을 이용한 진공 회로차단기의 캠윤곽 최적설계)

  • Since the performance of a vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) mainly depends on the spring operating mechanism, an analysis of the spring operating mechanism is required in order to improve the design of a VCB. In this study, the static stiffness of the spring was determined by using a material testing machine, and the test results were used to model the spring through computer simulation. The multi-body dynamic model of the spring was established by using the RecurDyn program. The dynamic model was verified by comparing the results of stem displacements and rotating angles of the brake shaft obtained from the simulation and from the experiments. After verification of the dynamic model of VCB, the cam profile of the VCB was optimized through multi-body dynamics simulation in order to improve the performance of the closing mechanism.

Study on a 2-Dimensional Dynamic Modeling Technique to Analyze the Overriding Phenomena of Rollingstock (열차의 타고오름 해석을 위한 2차원 충돌동역학 모델링 기법 연구)

  • This paper proposed a new 2-D multi-body dynamic modeling technique to analyze overriding behaviors taking place during train collision. This dynamic model is composed of nonlinear springs, dampers and masses by considering the deformable characteristics of carbodies as well as energy absorbing structures and components. By solving this dynamic model for rollingstock, energy absorbing capacities of collision elements, accelerations of passenger sections, impact forces applied to interconnecting devices, and overriding displacements can be well estimated. For a case study, we chose KHST (Korean High Speed Train), obtained crush characteristic data of each carbody section from 3-D finite element analysis, and established a 2-D multi-body dynamic model. This 2-D dynamic model was simulated under the train-to-train collision scenarios, and evaluated with 3-D virtual testing model. It was founded from the simulation results that this 2-D dynamic model could well predict overriding behaviors, and the modeling technique of carbody deformation was very important in overriding estimation.

Real-time Dynamic Simulation Using Multibody Vehicle Model (다물체 차량모델을 이용한 실시간 동역학 시뮬레이션)

  • This paper presents a real-time multibody vehicle dynamic analysis method using recursive Kanes formulation and suspension composite joints. To shorten the computation time of simulation, relative coordinate system is used and the equations of motion are derived using recursive Kanes formulation. Typical suspension systems of vehicles such as MacPherson strut suspension system is modeled by suspension composite joints. The joints are derived and utilized to reduce the computation time of simulation without any degradation of kinematical accuracy of the suspension systems. Using the develop program, a multibody vehicle dynamic model is formed and simulations are performed. Accuracy of the simulation results is compared to the real vehicle field test results. It is found that the simulation results using the proposed method are very accurate and real-time simulation is achieved on a computer with single PowerPC 604 processor.
