The absorption coefficients of various length bundles of straws simulating perforated material were studied both theoretically and experimentally. For the theoretical predictions Zwikker and Kosten's theory was modified by adapting Biot's theory based on Poiseuille flow. The experimental data were collected using an impedance tube where the attenuation along the length of the tube was considered. The theoretically predicted values agreed very well with the experimentally measured ones for frequencies lower than 700Hz with bundles shorter than 120mm in length placed against the rigid end of the impedance tube. Configurations with an air gap between the end of a bundle and the rigid end were also investigated. Absorption coefficients were higher for 150mm bundles than for those of combined/air gap configurations with a total length of 150mm. Also for the fixed bundle lengths, absorption was found to increase with increasing air gap.

The present study investigated numerically heat and mass transfer characteristics of a fixed bed reactor by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code of Fluent (ver. 13.0). The temperature and species fraction were estimated for different porosities. For modeling of the catalyst in a fixed bed tube, catalysts were regarded as the porous material, and the empirical correlation of pressure drop based on the modified Eugun equation was used for simulation. In addition, the averaged porosities were taken as 0.545, 0.409, and 0.443 and compared with non-porous state. The predicted results showed that the temperature at the tube wall became higher than that estimated along the center line of tube, leading to higher hydrogen generation by the endothermic reaction and heat transfer. As the mean porosity increases, the hydrogen yield and the outlet temperature decreased because of the pressure drop inside the reformer tube.
This paper deals with the process of obtaining sound transmission loss of a cylindrical silencer lined with multi-layered poroelastic sound absorbing materials. The Biot model and the Johnson-Champoux-Allard-Lafarge (JCAL) model were used to deal with waves propagating in multi-layered poroelastic materials. The boundary conditions required for analysis of the silencer were obtained and the numerical process of finding modes was explained. A numerical experiment was conducted on the 2-layered silencer using the modes and the transmission loss converged with the first 12 modes. Finally, the mode matching method proposed in this research was validated by being compared with the results calculated from Finite Element Method (FEM) about different kinds of sound absorbing materials.
In this study, the method to improve the electrochemical performance of $LiFePO_4$ by carbon coating and morphology control into porous structure was studied. The synthesis of $LiFePO_4$ was done by coprecipitation method by two step procedure. In the first step $FePO_4$ precursor was synthesized by coprecipitation method, followed by impregnation of lithium into the precursor at $750^{\circ}C$. The carbon coating was done by both physical and chemical coating processes. Using the physical coating process, the amount of coating layer was 6% and the capacity achieved was 125 mAh/g. In case of chemical coating process, the active material delivered 130~140 mAh/g, which is about 40% improvement of delivered capacity compared to uncoated $LiFePO_4$. For the morphology control into porous structure, we added nano particles of $Al_2O_3$ or $SiO_2$ into the active materials and formed the nanocomposite of ($Al_2O_3$ or $SiO_2$)/$LiFePO_4$. Between them, $SiO_2/LiFePO_4$ porous nanocomposite showed larger capacity of 132 mAh/g.

The present research is focused on the effect of porous graphite what is influenced on the 4H-SiC crystal growth by PVT method. We expect that it produces more C-rich and a change of temperature gradient for polytype stability of 4H-SiC crystal as adding the porous graphite in the growth cell. The SiC seeds and high purity SiC source materials were placed on opposite side in a sealed graphite crucible which was surrounded by graphite insulator. The growth temperature was around $2100{\sim}2300^{\circ}C$ and the growth pressure was 10~30 Torr of an argon pressure with 5~15 % nitrogen. 2 inch $4^{\circ}$ off-axis 4H-SiC with C-face (000-1) was used as a seed material. The porous graphite plate was inserted on SiC powder source to produce a more C-rich for polytype stability of 4H-SiC crystal and uniform radial temperature gradient. While in case of the conventional crucible, various polytypes such as 6H-, 15R-SiC were observed on SiC wafers, only 4H-SiC polytype was observed on SiC wafers prepared in porous graphite inserted crucible. The defect level such as MP and EP density of SiC crystal grown in the conventional crucible was observed to be higher than that of porous graphite inserted crucible. The better crystal quality of SiC grown using porous graphite plate was also confirmed by rocking curve measurement and Raman spectra analysis.
Porous nanofibers comprising hollow ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ nanospheres were prepared by applying both template method and Kirkendall diffusion effect to electrospinning process. During heat-treatment processes, the solid Fe nano-metals formed by initial heat-treatment in the carbon matrix were converted into the hollow structured ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ nanospheres. In particular, PS nanobeads added in the spinning solution were decomposed and formed numerous channels in the composite, which served as a good pathway for Kirkendall diffusion gas. The resulting porous nanofibers comprising hollow ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ nanospheres were applied as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The discharge capacities of the nanofibers for the 30th cycle at a high current density of $1.0A\;g^{-1}$ was $776mA\;h\;g^{-1}$. The good lithium ion storage property was attributed to the synergetic effects of the hollow ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ nanospheres and the interstitial nanovoids between the nanospheres. The synthetic method proposed in this study could be applied to the preparation of porous nanofibers comprising hollow nanospheres with various composition for various applications, including energy storage.

In this study, coffee waste was recycled into nitrogen-doped porous carbon fibers as an active material for high-energy EDLC (Electric Double Layer Capacitors). The coffee waste was mixed with polyvinylpyrrolidone and dissolved into dimethylformamide. The mixture was then electrospun to fabricate coffee waste-derived nanofibers (Bare-CWNF), and carbonization process was followed under a nitrogen atmosphere at 900℃. Similar to Bare-CWNF, the as-synthesized carbonized coffee waste-derived nanofibers (Carbonized-CWNF) maintained its fibrous form while preserving the composition of nitrogen. The electrochemical performance was analyzed for carbonized coffee waste (Carbonized-CW)-, carbonized PAN-derived nanofibers (Carbonized-PNF)-, and Carbonized-CWNF-based electrodes in the operating voltage window of -1.0-0.0V, Among the electrodes, Carbonized-CWNF-based electrodes exhibited the highest specific capacitance of 123.8F g-1 at 1A g-1 owing to presence of nitrogen and porous structure. As a result, nitrogen-contained porous carbon fibers synthesized from coffee waste showed excellent electrochemical performance as electrodes for high-energy EDLC. The experimental designed in this study successfully demonstrated the recycling of the coffee waste, one of the plant-based biomass that causes the environmental pollution into high-energy materials, also, attaining the ecofriendliness.
Nanoporous materials with nanometer-sized pores, are of great interest in the various applications such as selective adsorbents, heterogeneous catalysts and catalyst supports because of their high porosity, surface area, and size selective adsorption properties. This study is aimed to prepare nanoporous catalytic materials on the basis of two-dimersional clay by pillaring of $SiO_2$ sol particles. $SiO_2$ Pillared Montmorillonite (Si-PILM) was prepared by ion exchanging the interlayer $Ni^{2+}$ ions of clay with $SiO_2$ nano-sized particles of which the surface was modified with nicked polyhydroxy cations sach as $Ni_4(OH)_4^{4+}$. Nano-sized $SiO_2$ particles were formed by the controlled hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Upon pillaring of $Ni^+$-modified $SiO_2$ nano particles between the clay layers, the basal spacing was expanded largely to $45{\AA}$ and the extremely large specific surface area ($S_{BET}$) of $760m^2/g$ was obtained.
