Natural convection heat transfer has been investigated numerically in the vertical annulus filled withsaturated porous material for the aspect ratio less than unity. The inner wall of the annulus is exposed to constant heat flux condition and the outer wall is cooled to keep isothermal condition. The upper and the lower horizontal wall are assumed to be insulated. Under conditions ranging 50 .leq. Ra .leq. 10000, 1 .leq. RD .leq. 12, the characteristics of flow and heat transfer have been investigated. The results show that average Nusselt numbers increase when the radius ratio increases and the multicellular flows are not detected under the present conditions. Isothermal lines are plotted within the porous media. Temperatures of the inner wall with constant heat flux conditions and the local heat flux rate of the cooled outer wall with constant temperature are also obtained.

An analytical characterization is presented on the transient heat transfer by an oscillating flow through a porous slab. Based on a two-equation model, analytic solutions are obtained for both the fluid and solid temperature variations. Two parameters are identified as the Stanton number for the internal heat exchange and the ratio of the thermal capacities between the solid and fluid phases. The heat transfer characteristics are shown to be classified into four regimes according to the two parameters and physical interpretation is presented on the particular heat transfer processes within each regime. In addition, the condition for the local thermal equilibrium between the phases is examined and the relevant criterion is suggested.

This study was performed to improve water quality of stream by applying hydraulic structures (weir and river bed material) made of porous concrete. The physical and chemical characteristics of porous concrete were measured to estimate application possibility of it in hydraulic structures and it was considered as a proper material for the hydraulic structures. In the results of comparison for the component of matters attached on the hydraulic structures made of porous and ordinary concrete, DW (dry weight) amount attached on porous concrete was 1.6 times higher than that on ordinary concrete under the condition of the same flow rate but influence by flow rate (difference of 10 times) was not shown. Therefore, we could understand that the material of media was more important in DW amount than flow rate. The rate of AFDM (ash free dry mass) to DW also was more at porous concrete than at ordinary concrete. Especially, the high rates of nitrogen and phosphorous in matters attached on porous concrete verify that they were removed by assimilation, adsorption and metabolism of periphyton. The removal percentage of SS, BOD, COD, T-N and T-P by hydraulic structures applying porous concrete compared with ordinary concrete was increased by 34.6%, 36.9%, 33.9%, 18.3% and 21.6%, respectively. Therefore, applying porous concrete to hydraulic structure is expected to contribute to improvement of stream water quality.

Recently, removing methods of red tide has been attempted by filtering the organisms using the ceramic porous bodies. However, the marine biofouling could be developed on the surfaces of porous ceramic body after use for more than one month, and it might decrease the function of the specimen. In this paper, a method of inhibiting marine biofouling by changing the physical properties or surface-modification of ceramic porous body was studied. After experiment with six different ceramic porous bodies, it was found that the specimen of lower porosity and water absorption showed the least amount of biofouling. In addition, by increasing the surface roughness with silica particles bonded to the surface of specimen, the amount of biofouling caused by large marine life such as barnacle and mussel could be decreased. On the other hand, when the surface of specimen was coated and fused by glass powder, the amount of biofouling was rather increased. This might be due to eluted inorganic ions from the glass which can promote the growth of the microorganism. In conclusion, the environmental-friendly methods to reduce the amount of marine biofouling, such as controlling the physical properties and the surface roughness of the porous ceramics, can be possible without the use of dangerous substances. So it is expected for the results obtained to be applicable to a marine structure.
3D porous carbon electrodes (cNPIM), prepared by solution casting of a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) followed by nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) and carbonization are presented. In order to effectively control the pore size of 3D porous carbon structures, cNPIM was prepared by varying the THF ratio of mixed solvents. The SEM analysis revealed that cNPIMs have a unique 3D macroporous structure having a gradient pore structure, which is expected to grant a smooth and easy ion transfer capability as an electrode material. In addition, the cNPIMs presented a very large specific surface area ($2,101.1m^2/g$) with a narrow micropore size distribution (0.75 nm). Consequently, the cNPIM exhibits a high specific capacitance (304.8 F/g) and superior rate capability of 77% in an aqueous electrolyte. We believe that our approach can provide a variety of new 3D porous carbon materials for the application to an electrochemical energy storage.

Radiative charaacteristics of glass windows and porous absorbing media which can be used for a solar air heater are determined through the measurements of spectral transmittances. Those in the visible range are measured by the UV-IR spectrometer. Refractive index of glass are obtained by the comparison of the measured transmittances and the correlations derived from the electromagnetic theory and are compared to the theoretical ones calculated from the classical dispersion theory. Absorption and back-scattering coefficients of 15-mesh stainless wire screens are calcuated by the comparison of the measured transmittances and the correlations derived from the two flux model.
Before the commercialization of polymeric membranes applicable for industrial application, the homework remains for the high-performance polymers to overcome the practical challenge: long-term stability for prolonged service time. Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs), exhibiting exceptionally high fractional free volume and high permeability, are susceptible to physical aging where the extra volume created by the inefficient ladder-type packing will lead them from the volumetric equilibrium and reduce the free volume/permeability over time. Here, we will re-examine the physical aging of polymers of intrinsic microporosity, and discuss some of the most prominent attempts to mitigate physical aging in PIMs.
