  • Until now, there has been much efforts for the development of polycyclic molecules as high energy materials because of their high density and potential energy. However, there were only a few reports on the development of highly N-substituted polycyclic compounds due to difficulties of the synthesis. We have designed pentaazapropellanes as new high energy materials and we have recently reported unsubstituted 3,7,9,11-tetraoxo-2,4,6,8,10-pentaaza[3.3.3]propellane (TOPAP) 2 as a new skeleton for high energy materials. Herein, the nitration of TOPAP 2 was reported for the first time. Thus, 2,6-dinitro-3,7,9,11-ttraoxo-2,4,6,8,10-pentaaza[3.3.3]propellane (2,6-DNTOPAP) 5C, which is a new nitro derivative of TOPAP 2, was obtained up to 82% yield by the reaction of $NO_2BF_4$ and anhydrous $HNO_3$. The structure of 5C was determined by spectroscopic analysis.

  • The rate of chlorine-exchange reaction of antimony trichloride with benzyl, $\alpha$-phenyl ethyl and diphenyl methyl chlorides in nitrobenzene have been determined. The results indicate that the chlorine-exchange reaction follows second-order kinetics with respect to antimony trichloride and first-order kinetics with respect to organic chlorides. Rate = $k_3[SbCl_3]^2$ [Org-Cl] The rate constants of chlorine-exchange of antimony trichloride with organic chloride increase in the following order of the organic chlorides. Benzyl chloride < $\alpha$-phenyl ethyl chloride < diphenyl methyl chloride The mechanism of the chlorine-exchange reactions has been proposed.

  • Synthesis and characterization of alkyl-capped nanocrystalline silicon (R-n-Si) have been achieved from the reaction of silicontetrachloride with magnesiumsilicide. Surface of silicon nanocrystal has been derivatized with various alkyl groups (R=methyl, n-butyl, etc.). Silicon nanoparticles have been also obtained by the sonication of luminescent porous silicon. Former exhibits an emission band at 360 nm, but latter exhibits an emission band at 680 nm. In this study very sensitive detection of TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene), DNT (2,4-dinitrotoluene), NB (nitrobenzene), and PA (picric acid) has been achieved in gas phase with porous silicon using photoluminescence quenching of the silicon crystallites as a transduction mode. Porous silicon are electrochemically etched from crystalline silicon wafers in an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid. We have characterized these silicon nanoparticles by Luminescence Spectrometer (LS 55).

  • Some compounds including flavonoids were tested as scavenger of nitrite which is believed to participate in the formation of N-nitroso compound. Many were found to be potent scavengers and the most potent ones were ascorbic arid, potassium thiocyanate, chlorogenic acid, catechin, morin, luteolin, luteolin-7-glucoside, and naringenin. To evaluate the influence of the above compounds on the endogenous formation of N-nitroso compound, the amount of nitrosoproline (NPRO) was examined by co-incubation of nitrite, proline, and test compounds at various concentrations. The analysis of NPRO by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was newly developed. Most compounds except ascorbic acid and chlorogenic acid were found to be no effects or activatory effects on NPRO formation. From the results obtained, it was suggested that most flavonoids which are contained in our customary diets were not associated with the inhibition of NPRO formation.

  • The addition of one mole of aluminum chloride to three moles of sodium borohydride in tetrahydrofuran gives a turbid solution with enormously more powerful reducing properties than those of sodium borohydride itself. The reducing properties of this reagent were tested with 49 organic compounds which have representative functional groups. Alcohols liberated hydrogen immediately but showed no sign of hydrogenolysis of alkoxy group. Aldehydes and ketones were reduced rapidly within one hr. Acyl derivatives were reduced moderately, however, carboxylic acids were reduced much more slowly. Esters, lactones and epoxides were reduced readily than sodium borohydride or borane. Tertiary amide was reduced slowly, however, primary amide consumed one hydride for hydrogen evolution but reduction was sluggish. Aromatic nitrile was reduced much more readily than aliphatic nitrile. Nitro compounds were inert to this reagent but azo and azoxy groups were slowly attacked. Oxime was reduced slowly but isocyanate was only partially reduced. Disulfide and sulfoxide were attacked slowly but sulfide and sulfone were inert. Olefin was hydroborated rapidly.

  • The rearrangement of [(ethoxycarbonyl)phenylaminomethyl]phenylcarbamic acid ethyl esters(N-benzyl compounds) to methylenediphenyldiurethanes(MDU) in sulfuric acid, sulfuric acid-absolute ethanol solvent system, and sulfuric acid-nitrobenzene solvent system, and boron trifluoride at $90^{\circ}C$ was studied. The production of MDU was the highest in sulfuric acid-nitrobenzene system giving 64% MDU yield, of which 58% was 4,4'-MDU. The simultaneous condensation of EPC and formaldehyde and rearrangement to MDU were studied in the presence of different amounts of sulfuric acid, trifluoroacetic acid, and boron trifluoride at $70^{\circ}C$. Though 17mmol of sulfuric acid with 30mmol of EPC produced the highest MDU, the MDU yield was much lower than that from separate condensation and rearrangement reaction.

  • Phenolic compounds are known to inhibit the nitrosation or oxidation reaction. In the present work, the effects of phenolic compounds including phenolic acids and flavonoids on the nitrite-scavenging and electron donating ability were tested as scavenger of nitrite which is believed to participate in the formation of N-nitroso compounds and investigated as electron donator. The nitrite scavenging ability appeared in all the phenolic acids and showed the highest value at PH 1.2. Among the Phenolic compounds, phenolic acids showed higher nitrite-scavenging action than some flavonoids. Futhermore, the nitrite scavenging action of phenolic compounds was pH dependent highest at pH 1.2 and lowest at pH 6.0. The electron donating ability (EDA) by reduction of ${\alpha},{\alpha}$-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) among hydroxybenzoic acids was in the decreasing order of gallic acid, gentisic acid, syringic acid, protocatechuic acid, salicylic acid, vanillic acid, benzoic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. EDA of hydroxycinnamic acids was in the decreasing order of hydrocaffeic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid and trans-cinnamic acid. EDA of flavonoids was in the decreasing order of (+)catechin, rutin, quercetin, naringin and hesperidin. Other phenolic compounds were significantly high in electron donating abilities.
