  • In this paper, an experimental verification of system identification technique for constructing finite element model is conducted for a three-story test structure equipped with an active mass driver (AMD). Twenty Gaussian white noises were used as the input for AMD, and the corresponding accelerations of each floor are measured. Then, the complex frequency response function (FRF) for the input, the force induced by the AMD, was obtained and subsequently, the Markov parameters and system matrices were estimated. The magnitudes as well as phase of experimentally obtained FRFs match well with those of analytically obtained FRFs.

  • This paper is concerned with the active vibration control of building structure by means of the active tuned mass damper and the modified positive position feedback controller. To this end, one-degree-of-freedom spring-mass-damper system equipped with ATMD is considered. The stability condition for the addressed system when applying the proposed PPF controller is derived by Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion. The stability condition shows that the modified PPF controller is absolutely stable if the controller gain is positive, so that the modified PPF controller can be used without difficulty. Theoretical study shows that the modified PPF controller can effectively suppress vibrations as the original PPF controller does in smart structure applications. To investigate the validity of the modified PPF controller, a simple experimental structure with an ATMD system driven by DC motor was built. The modified PPF control algorithm was implemented on Atmel 128 microcontroller. The experimental result shows that the modified PPF controller can also suppress vibrations for the real structure.

  • This paper presents the result of a comparison study to evaluate the performance of several semi-active control algorithms for use with large-scale MR damper applied to a building structure under seismic excitation using real-time hybrid test method. Recently, a variety of semi-active control algorithm studies are developed and generally evaluated the performance by using numerical analysis. In this paper real-time hybrid test method was applied to performance evaluating of semi-active control algorithms including a clipped optimal algorithm and the modulated homogeneous friction algorithm.

  • The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with active and passive constrained layer damping has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived fro flexural vibrations of symmetrical,. multi-layer laminated beams. The damping ratio and model damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. The direct negative velocity feedback control is used for the active constrained layer damping. It is shown that the flexible laminated beam is more effective in the vibration control for both active and passive constrained layer damping. and this paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with constrained layer damping.

  • This paper presents Newtonian formulation of the dynamics of plates treated fully with Active Constrained Layer Damping (ACLD). The developed equations of the plate/ACLD system provide analytical models far predicting the dynamic of laminated plates subjected to passive and active vibration damping controls. Numerical solutions of the analytical models are presented fir simply-supported plates in order to study the performance of the plate/ACLD system for different control strategies. The developed models present invaluable means for designing and predicting the performance of the smart laminated plates that can be used in many critical engineering applications.

  • The flexural vibration of aluminum beams with active and passive constrained-layer damping has been investigated experimentally to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. Piezoelectric film is used as a sensor and piezoceramic as an actuator for the negative velocity feedback control. The experimental results are compared with those by the finite element analysis. This paper shows the effectiveness of active constrained-layer damping treatment through experiments, and we have carried out an experiment to study the effect of beam thickness.
