  • A force cancelling observed to control the vibration of a single degree of freedom elastic system subjected to an arbitrary, unmeasurable disturbance is considered in this paper. The main idea of a force cancelling observer is how an estimate of the excitation can be derived and used to generate a control force which reduces the vibration. This control is shown to be robust with respect to the parameters describing the behavior of the system. Experimental and numerical results are presented which show the efficacy of the observer when the system is excited by periodic, random, and impulsive torques.

  • In this paper, a X-Band T/R-module for SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems based on active phased array antennas is designed and fabricated. The T/R modules have a and width of more than 800 MHz centered at X-Band and support dual, switched polarizations. The output power of the module is 7 watts over a wide bandwidth. The noise figure is as low as 3.9 dB. Phase and amplitude are controlled by a 6-bit phase shifter and a 6-bit digital attenuator, respectively. Further the fabricated T/R module has est and calibration port with directional coupler and power divider. Highly integrated T/R module is achieved by using LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic) multiple layer substrate. RMS gain error is less than 0.8 dB max. in Rx mode, and RMS phase error is less than $4^{\circ}$ max. in Rx/Tx phase under all operating frequency band, or the T/R module meet the required electrical performance m test. This structure an be applied to active phase array SAR Antennas.

  • In this paper, we fabricated two on-wafer type DUT(Device-Under-Test)s; a 10-dB attenuator and an amplifier using commercially available MMIC and we proposed the measurement method of the noise parameters for the two fabricated DUTs. Since the 10-dB attenuator DUT is a passive device, its noise parameters can be accurately determined when its S-parameters are measured. In the case of the amplifier DUT, its noise parameters are available in the datasheet. Hence, the measured noise parameters using the proposed method can be assessed by comparing with the known noise parameters. The noise parameter measurement method having been presented by the authors requires the S-parameters of the 8-port network used in the measurement and limited to coaxial type DUTs. When on-wafer probes are included in the 8-port network, the 8-port S-parameters requires the measurements with different kinds of connectors. In this paper, we obtained the 8-port S-parameters using the Smart-Cal function in the network analyzer. The measured noise parameters shows about ${\pm}0.2dB$ fluctuations for $NF_{min}$. Other noise parameters with the frequency change show good agreement with the expected results.

  • Seoul National University flap(SNUF) blade is a small-scale rotor blade incorporating a small trailing-edge flap control surface driven by piezoelectric actuators at higher harmonics for vibration attenuation. Initially, the blade was designed using two-dimensional cross-section analysis and geometrically exact one-dimensional beam analysis, and its material configuration was finalized. A flap-deflection angle of ${\pm}4^{\circ}$ was established as the criterion for enhanced vibration reduction based on an earlier simulation. The flap-linkage mechanism was designed and static bench tests were conducted for verifying the performance of the flap-actuation mechanism. Different versions of test beds were developed and tested with the designed flap and the selected APA 200M piezoelectric actuators. Through significant improvements, a maximum deflection of ${\pm}3.7^{\circ}$ was achieved. High-frequency experiments were conducted for evaluating the performance, and the transfer function of the test bed was determined experimentally. With the static tests almost complete, the rotor power required for testing the blade in a whirl tower (centrifugal environment) was calculated, and further preparations are underway.

  • This paper describes the development and measurement results of a wide-band planar active phase array antenna system for an electronic warfare jamming transmitter. The system is designed as an $8{\times}8$ triangular lattice array using a $45^{\circ}$ slant wide-band antenna. The 64-element transmission channel is composed of a wide-band gallium nitride(GaN) solid state power amplifier and a gallium arsenide(GaAs) multi-function core chip(MFC). Each GaAs MFC includes a true-time delay circuit to avoid a wide-band beam squint, a digital attenuator, and a GaAs drive amplifier to electronically steer the transmitted beam over a ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ azimuth angle and ${\pm}25^{\circ}$ elevation angle scan. Measurement of the transmitted beam pattern is conducted using a near-field measurement facility. The EIRP of the designed system, which is 9.8 dB more than the target EIRP performance(P), and the ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ azimuth and ${\pm}25^{\circ}$ elevation beam steering fulfill the desired specifications.

  • Semi-active suspension systems are greatly expected to be in the mainstream of future controlled suspensions for passenger cars. In this study, a continuous variable damper for a passenger car suspension is developed, which is controlled actively and exhibits high performance with light weight, low cost, and low energy consumption. To get fast response of the damper, reverse damping mechanism is adapted, and to get small pressure change rate after blow-off, a pilot controlled proportional valve is designed and analyzed. The reverse continuous variable damper is designed as a HS-SH damper that offers good body control with reduced transferred input force from tire, compared with any other type of suspension system. The damper structure is designed, so that rebound and compression damping force can be tuned independently, of which variable valve is placed externally. The rate of pressure change with respect to the flow rate after blow-off becomes smooth when the fixed orifice size increases, which means that the blow-off slope is controllable using the fixed orifice size. The damping force variance is wide and continuous, and is controlled by the spool opening, of which scheme is usually adapted in proportional valves. The reverse continuous variable damper developed in this study is expected to be utilized in the semi-active suspension systems in passenger cars after its performance and simplicity of the design is confirmed through real car test.

  • In this paper, the semi-active control of a helicopter landing gear using magneto -rheological(MR) damper is studied. A dynamic model of the MR damper is formulated by incorporating magnetic field-dependent Bingham properties of the MR fluid. The electromagnet of the MR damper is designed and its magnetic field is analyzed using a commercial finite element code. The damping characteristics of MR damper by changing the intensity of the magnetic field are investigated and the dynamic responses of the helicopter landing gear with MR damper are simulated. The semi-active control of the helicopter landing gear is simulated by implementing a sky-kook control algorithm and its performance is evaluated comparing to the passive control.

  • A RF wideband receiver for INMARSAT-B satellite communications system was composed of low noise amplifier and high gain amplifier, The low noise amplifier used to the resistive decoupling circuit for input impedance matching and self-bias circuits for low noise. The high gain amplifier consists of matched amplifier type to improve receiver gain. The active bias circuit can be used to provide temperature stability without requiring the large voltage drop or relatively high-dissipated power needed with a bias stabilization resistor. The bandpass filter was used to reduce a spurious level. As a result, the characteristics of the receiver implemented here show more than 60 dB in gain and less than 1.8:1 in input and output voltage standing wave ratio(VSWR), especially the carrier to noise ratio which is input signal level -126.7 dB m at 1537.5 MHz is a 45.23 dB /Hz at a 1.02 kHz.

  • To improve not only the basic performance but also the fail-safe performance, power consumption of the main landing gear for helicopters, a semi-active control landing gear using hybrid MR damper, was introduced in this paper. This damper of the configuration to install a permanent magnet in a electromagnet MR damper, was designed by the trade-off study on permanent magnet location and a magnet field analysis. Force control algorithm which keep the sum of air spring force and damping force at a specified value during landing, was used for the controller. The drop simulations using ADAMS Model for this semi-active control landing gear, were done. The improvement of the preceding performances as the result to evaluate the landing performance by the simulations, has been confirmed.

  • In general, noise measurement results show larger random ripple than those of the network analyzer. The reason for the lager random ripple of the noise measurements is considered that the general noise measurements uses absolute measured noise powers, while the network analyzer measures using a ratio of the measured powers. In this paper, a novel measurement method of noise correlation matrix using relative noise ratios is proposed. Proposed method measures the five noise powers of DUT for the five input impedance variations and the four relative noise ratios are formed using the five measured noise powers. The four noise ratios are used to compute the noise correlation matrix and noise parameters. The resulting noise parameters for a 0.5 dB attenuator show good agreements with theoretical values calculated by S-parameters. Also, the noise parameters of an active DUT with a noise figure of less than 1 dB are measured and the measured results show a small random ripple as expected and their values are physically acceptable. In conclusion, the proposed method can be applied to the noise parameter measurements for DUT with a noise figure below 1 dB.
