  • We performed a numerical modeling study of thermodynamic and multiphase fluid flow processes associated with underground compressed air energy storage (CAES) in a lined rock cavern (LRC). We investigated air tightness performance by calculating air leakage rate of the underground storage cavern with concrete linings at a comparatively shallow depth of 100 m. Our air-mass balance analysis showed that the key parameter to assure the long-term air tightness of such a system was the permeability of both concrete linings and surrounding rock mass. It was noted that concrete linings with a permeability of less than $1.0{\times}10^{-18}\;m^2$ would result in an acceptable air leakage rate of less than 1% with the operational pressure range between 5 and 8 MPa. We also found that air leakage could be effectively prevented and the air tightness performance of underground lined rock cavern is enhanced if the concrete lining is kept at a higher moisture content.

  • The performance characteristics of a smoke damper, which aims to suppress the penetration of smoke to a safe area, have been tested under the regulation of the FIS 001. However, the improvement of the test methods and the regulation has consecutively been requested. From a view-point of fluid mechanical theory, a pressure control damper, that is installed at the end of the flow control system, is important and it dominates flow characteristics in all designed flow systems. In this study, the weak points of the regulation of the FIS 001 concerned with the pressure control damper was visited and the some important characteristics of the damper was examined. Based on these results, it was confirmed that the effects of flow disturbance in the air supplying duct on the performance of the damper are not significant. This results gives some information for the modification of the experimental regulation concerned to the pressure control damper.

  • This study examined the flow characteristics of fire smoke under pressurized air ventilation conditions by carrying out fire simulations on multi-compartment enclosure, including room, ancillary room and stair case. Fire simulations were conducted for the air-leakage test facility, which was constructed to measure the effective leakage area and aimed to improve the understandings of fire and smoke movement by analyzing the overall behaviors of fire smoke flow and pressure distributions of each compartment. The simulation results showed that the heat release rate of the fires was controlled sensitively by the amount of air supplied by the ventilation system. An analysis of the velocity distributions between the room and ancillary room showed that fire smoke could be leaked to the ancillary room through the upper layer of the door, even under pressurized air supply conditions. From these results, it was confirmed that the fire size and spatial characteristics should be considered for the design and application of a smoke control system by a pressurized air supply.

  • In this study, the thermal environment in a large scale coal mine located in Taebaek, Gangwondo was assessed by a field survey. In order to estimate the thermal environment, various heat stress indices such as WBGT, HSI, ESI, KATA index and effective temperature were investigated. Correlation analysis was also conducted. It was found that the thermal environment in most workplace was high. In particular, the correlation coefficient between HSI reflected in physiological fatigue characteristic and the maximum sweat evaporation heat was -0.834. This shows that the correlation coefficient have the most influence on HSI index. The factor which has the most influence on the maximum sweat evaporation heat is velocity of air. The thermal environment of high-depth coal mines is likely to be improved by installing a structure that enables the maximum prevention of extended digging, air doors, or the leakage of the inflow of air in the first shaft.
