  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to better understand types of health behavior in middle aged women in the Korean agricultural society, understand their nursing needs, and eventually present guidelines to develop proper nursing interventions. Method: Participants for this study were 16 middle aged women from farming communities, who lived in C county and were independent and without chronic ailments. In collection and analysis of data Strauss & Cortin's (1997) research processes and methods were used. The period of data collection was between April 2001 and February 2002. Result: The results of the study showed that the core category was the family-oriented process of $yangsaeng^{1)}$, and four types of health behaviors were observed; $momboyang^{2)}$ maintenance of health through daily life, managing mental health, and managing illness. Each type was perceived to differ from the other in the terms of health behavior priority which was largely affected by the cultural surrounding, for example, degree of attention to children's education and tendency to a traditional role for women. Conclusion: In conclusion, nurses need to understand various types of health behavior in middle aged women. The findings from this study can be applied to the development of Korean nursing interventions that are based on health behavior among middle aged women in the Korean agricultural society. These interventions can then. be based upon understanding of Korean culture rather than drawn only from Western concepts of health behavior.

Results: The total of International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire scores was significantly decreased after the intervention (pre-test: $4.55{\pm}3.88$, post-test: $3.21{\pm}3.00$, p<.001). Significant improvement was also noted on the mean knowledge scores (pre-est: $16.66{\pm}6.24$, post-test: $21.43{\pm}5.15,$ p<.001). Conclusions: This study suggests that the UI self-management program is useful in improving the symptom of UI for middle-aged women living in communities.

  • In order to promote well-being during old age, it is important to start preparing early on for the later life. Based on this thesis, this study examined attitudes of the middle-aged women residing in rural towns on their preparation for old age as well as related variables. For this purpose, survey data from 200 individuals were analyzed using a SAS program. The overall degree of preparation for old age was quantified as about 67 points out of a 100 possible points. The variables that affected the level of preparedness include attitude toward using a paid nursing home ($\beta$=.23), type of agricultural work they engage in ($\beta$=-.21), who do you think is a supporter during your old age($\beta$=.20)], type of decision-making in the household ($\beta$=.17). The explanatory power of such variables as standards of living ($\beta$=.18), family type ($\beta$=-.18), recognition of the entrance of old age ($\beta$=.17), and preparation behavior for old age ($\beta$=.15) were partially proved in three sub-areas (economical, emotional, and leisure areas) of preparation. The groundwork of this study could be used as basic materials to develop an educational program to improve the attitudes toward preparation for old age.

Method: The participants were 19 rural women age of 40 or over who were living in the area within the jurisdiction of a public health center in North Chung Province and who agreed to participate in the study. The Thera-band exercise program was implemented for 10 weeks from Jan 17. to Mar 31. 2005. Total time was 60 minutes, 5 times a week. Paired t-test was used to analyze the data using the SPSS program. Result: The results of study showed that thigh muscle strength(t= 6.718, p <.001) and the dynamic balance(t=4.934, p <.001) decreased significantly. Ankle muscle strength(t=-6.739, pp <.001) and static balance (t=-2.395, p=.025) increased significantly. Conclusion: The results suggest that the Thera-band exercise program could be effective in improving thigh muscle strength, ankle muscle strength, the static balance, and the dynamic balance of rural female farmers. Further study is needed to compare strength and balance before and after the exercise program and to use a control group for comparison. Also it is needed to do more study on the appropriate length of time that the intervention should be given in order to achieve maximum results.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a multifactorial program for urinary incontinence, self-esteem and self-efficacy in older women. Methods: A one-group pretest-posttest with no control group was used. Nineteen women completed weekly 90-min group sessions for eight weeks. The group received a multi-factorial program comprised of Kegel exercise, education and psychosocial programs over 8 weeks. Data on urinary incontinence, self-esteem and self-efficacy were collected twice: before the intervention and 8 weeks after the intervention. Data were analyzed using paired t-test by non-parametric statistics. Results: Total scores for the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire decreased significantly after the intervention (pretest $7.95{\pm}5.48$, posttest $5.15{\pm}4.72$, p<.05). The scores for self-esteem and self-efficacy improved significantly. Conclusion: These results indicate that a multifactorial program for older women is feasible to prevent urinary incontinence in women living in the community.
