  • 'Boseogheugchal', a new black pericarp glutinous rice cultivar (Oriza sativa L.), was developed by the rice breeding team of National Institute of Crop Science, RDA, Suwon, Korea during the period from 1997 to 2008 and released in 2008. It was derived from a cross between SR18638-B-B-B-18-2/ Heugmi H31. The maturity of this cultivar is about 135 days from seedling to heading. This cultivar has about 12 tillers per hill and 94 spikelet numbers per panicle. Ripening ratio is about 72% and 1000 grain weight is 21.6 g in brown rice. This new variety shows grain shattering resistance and susceptible for blast, bacterial leaf blight and stripe virus. 'Boseogheugchal' has glutinous endosperm and low protein contents. It has higher anthocyanin content compared to black pigmented check cultivar 'Hegjinjubyeo'. The yield performance of brown rice was 4.82 MT/ha in local adaptability test for three years. 'Boseogheugchal' is adaptable to central plain area of Korea.

  • 'Asemi' is a rice variety derived from a cross between 'Jinmibyeo' which has translucent milled rice and medium maturity and 'Cheolwon46', an elite line with high yield and early maturity by the rice breeding team at NICS, RDA in 2013. The heading date of 'Asemi' is August 1, six days earlier than the check variety 'Hwaseong'. It has 82 cm culm length and 109 spikelets per panicle. 'Asemi' is resistant to blast disease, stripe virus and tungro virus, but susceptible to other viruses and planthoppers. The milled rice of this variety exhibits translucent, clear non-glutinous endosperm and short grain shape. It has protein content (6.7%) higher than 'Hwaseong', and amylose content (19.5%) similar to 'Hwaseong'. The milled rice recovery rate of 'Asemi' is similar to that of 'Hwaseong'. However, the head rice rate of 'Asemi' is higher than that of 'Hwaseong'. Milled rice yield of 'Asemi' is 5.23 MT/ha in ordinary cultivation. ' Asemi' could be adaptable to the wide region of tropical Asia (Registration No. 5639).

  • 'Jungmo1033', a japonica rice variety, was developed by the rice breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 1992. It is derived from a cross between a native variety 'Jagwangdo', which has translucent milled rice and medium maturity; and 'Hwayeong', which is an elite line with bacterial blight resistance and mid-late maturity. The heading date of 'Jungmo1033' was August 10 in the middle plain area of Korea, which was two days later than that of 'Hwaseong'. 'Jungmo1033' has a culm length of 79 cm, which was 5 cm shorter than that of 'Hwaseong', and 105 spikelets per panicle. 'Jungmo1033' showed resistance to bacterial blight (K1, K2, and K3 races) and stripe virus, but susceptibility to the K3a race of bacterial blight, dwarf and black-streaked dwarf viruses, and planthoppers. The milled rice of this variety exhibited translucency and a medium short grain shape. It had an excellent appearance and lower amylose content (19.1%) than that of 'Hwaseong'. The characteristics related to grain milling were better than those of 'Hwaseong', especially head rice milling recovery ratio and head rice ratio (94.8%). 'Jungmo1033' showed a milled rice productivity of 5.38 MT/ha at 11 sites under ordinary cultivation conditions. (Registration No. 5723)

  • To estimate the WTP(Willingness to Pay) for consistent maintenance of rural multi-cultural families' contribution worth such as vitality of rural population, regional economic vitalization, cultural diversity of rural, maintenance of rural family society, and diversity of rural resource, a questionnaire survey was conducted by double-bounded dichotomous choice method based on Weibull model in 41 city county of rural. A estimation models based on Tunball models were developed and applied to WTP estimation with logistic analysis. WTP estimates for consistent maintenance of multi-cultural contribution worth by rural resident was 458 hundred million won. It means that each rural household can pay 13,840 won per annual. WTP estimates assessed by multi-cultural families' husband as a criteria for comparison was 502 hundred million won. It means that each household can pay 15,170 won per annual.

  • A light pink single freesia (Freesia hybrida Hort.) 'Bolero' was developed from a cross of breeding line ('Yellow Ballet' and 'Yellow Dream') and 'Sandra' followed by seedling and line selections at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA) in 2007. Growth and flowering characteristic tests were conducted from 2003 to 2006. 'Bolero' has single type flower with light pink color (RHS, R55B). It has multiple florets, stable flower shape, upright leaves and stalks. The average cut flower yield of 'Bolero' observed in the greenhouse from 2005 to 2007 was 7.5 cuttings per plant. It has good production of cormlets and vigorous growth. 'Bolero' could be cultured under greenhouse conditions in Korea.
