  • A method for the determination of four pesticide compounds, urea (isoproturon), bis-carbamate (phenmedipham), thiocarbamate (pyridate) and vinyllidenediamine (nitenpyram) were examined and analyzed by HPLC with C-18 column ($250\;mm{\times}4.6\;mm$, $5\;{\mu}m$ diameter particle size). Mobile phase consisted of deionized water, acetonitrile and 50 mM $KH_2PO_4$ (pH 2.5). Isoproturon and phenmedipham analytical condition was isocratic elution of the column with 50% solvent A (acetonitrile) and 50% solvent B (deionized water); pyridate was 85% solvent A (acetonitrile) and 15% solvent B (deionized water) at a flow rate of 1 mL/min; and nitenpyram analytical condition was 90% solvent A (50 mM $KH_2PO_4$, pH 2.5) and 10% solvent B (acetonitrile) at a flow rate of 1 mL/min. In results, retention times were 6.12, 8.63, 9.40 and 12.76 min for isoproturon, phenmedipham, pyridate and nitenpyram, respectively. All injection volumes were $10\;{\mu}L$ and the limit of quantitation was 0.05 mg/kg for four pesticide compounds, respectively. Recovery rate test was performed with three farm products, rice, apple and soybean. Four pesticide compounds were spiked at concentrations of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 mg/kg. The recovery rates were ranged from 70.18% to 118.08% and the standard deviations of all experiments were within 10%.

  • Recently, the international standardization of ISO in the field of Oriental Herbal Medicine has been progressing rapidly under the direction of China's promotion. China's intention to promote international standardization is to extend its influence to the world and beyond the domestic market. The Oriental medicine system in East Asia has similar roots in academic terms, but the medicines that can be supplied and received in each country are different and have developed independently. The international standardization of medicinal herbs is expected to function in a direction that weakens such differentiation and independence. From a commercial point of view, international standardization is no different from creating evaluation criteria for oriental medicinal products, and it is expected that its potential impact on domestic and overseas markets and producers will be large. In particular, the international standardization centered on China can lead to favorable evaluation criteria for China, which may further negatively affect the market competitiveness of domestic raw materials, which have been pushed back by Chinese manufacturers. If the domestic production base is weakened, not only will the farmers suffer but the supply and demand of raw materials will also be manipulated, safety management control will be reduced, and the development of oriental herbal products using domestic raw materials will be hurt. Therefore, in the promotion of international standardization, it is necessary not only to reflect the value of Korean herbal medicine but also to provide strategic responses to protect the domestic production base. However, in the case of recent initiatives, there is no precedent in analyzing influence on the production partners and the related industries. In addition, there are few related papers and reports on the subject, so the publicity process has not been done sufficiently. In response to this, this study will examine the countermeasures against the international standardization of herbal medicines through reviewing its present status and evaluating the agenda of the Korean initiative.

  • BACKGROUND:This study was conducted to investigate residual organochlorine pesticides (ROCPs) in agricultural soils and crops. Agricultural soil samples and crop samples were collected from 93 cities and counties. METHODS AND RESULTS: Extraction and clean-up for the quantitative analysis of ROCPs were conducted by the modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method. Recovery and limit of detection (LOD) of ROCPs in agriculturalsoils and crops were 76.5-103.0 and 75.2-93.2%, 0.01-0.08 and $0.10-0.15{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. Detected ROCPs in agricultural soils were ${\alpha}$-endosulfan, ${\beta}$-endosulfan, and endosulfan sulfate, the residue were 2.0-12.0, 1.2-53.1, and $2.2-329.8{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. But these pesticides in all green perilla leaf and green pepper samples were not detected. CONCLUSION: These results showed that ROCPs residues in agricultural soils were not as high as crop safety threatening.

  • The dissipation of insecticide fenitrothion(O,O-dimethyl O-4-nitro-m-tolyl phosphorothioate), fungicide IBP(S-benzyl O, O-diisopropyl phosphorothioate), and herbicide butachlor(N-butozymethyl-2-chloro-2', 6'-diethylacetanilide) in flooded soil planted with rice plants was investigated in outdoor pot conditions. The half lives of IBP, butachlor and fenitrothion in the flooding water treated with IBP at 98g, butachlor at 352.8g, and fenitrothion at 100g ai/10a, were 3.6, 1.7 and within 1 day, respectively. The concentration of fenitrothion at 5 days after application was found to be less than 0.0lppm. In the case of IBP and butachlor after 20 days, the concentration was 0.025 and 0.004ppm, respectively. The concentration of fenitrothion, IBP, butachlor in a soil depth of 0-3cm was 0.07, 1.45 and 3.37ppm on the 3rd day after application, and below 0.05, 0.18, 0.39ppm after 7 days, respectively. However, 27 days after application concentration of IBP and butachlor at 0-5cm soil depth resulted in 0.04 and 0.05ppm, respectively. The disappearance of pesticides was remarkably rapid, compared to those in the some soil under the laboratory conditions. Differences in the concentration of IBP in different soil profiles were few, but amounts of butachlor were remarkably higher at 0-2cm soil depth than below 2cm soil depth.

  • To obtain informations on the development of the combined granular pesticides for the simultaneous control of rice insect pests and diseases which often occur at the same time or in overlapping experiments were carried out on twelve mixture pesticides of granular type formulated by extrusion method with two fungicides and three insecticides. Each of 12 mixtures was tested for physico-chemical properties and efficacy against to rice leaf blast and brown planthoppers under the laboratory conditions. All of the mixture pesticides showed acceptable physico chemical properties as granular formulation. Most of the compounds in mixture pesticides showed a tendency to have lower stabilities than those of pesticide alone, therefore, it was necessary to add stabilizer in formulation process. Isoprothiolane combinations were found very effective against leaf blast but their control effects were similar to that of isoprothiolane alone due to its high efficacy, while probenazole-carbofuran combinations showed synergistic effects for the control of leaf blast. All of the combinations showed synergistic effects to brown planthoppers. But fenthion and 3% propoxur combinations resulted comparatively low efficacies. In the consideration of their physico-chemical properties and efficacies to rice pests, carbofuran and 6% propoxur combinations were promising combined granular pesticides for the simultaneous control of leaf blast and brown planthoppers, while fenthion and 3% propoxur combinations were not available because of their low efficacies for brown planthoppers.

  • In the red pepper field under polythylene film mulching(P.E.-mulching) culture, the weed emergence was completely inhibited by black P.E.-mulching. The emergence in clear P.E.-mulching decreased 90% compared to that in non-mulching. Weeding effect was high in the order of pendimethalin, diphenamid, alachlor and napropamide. The effect of herbicides was higher in clear P.E.-mulching than in non-mulching. Plant height and number of branches increased in the order of clear P.E.-, black P.E.-mulching, while the yield between black P.E.- and clear P.E.-mulching was not different. The herbicides had no effect on the growth and yield. In the peanut field, weed emergence was 80% lower in clear P.E.-mulching than in non-mulching. Weeding effect was excellent in the plot applied with alachlor, napropamide and diphenamid. The total number of branches, main stem height and shoot weight were 2.0, 1.7 and 2.4 times greater in clear P.E.-mulching than in non-mulching, respectively. Peanut yield was about 38% higher under clear P.E.-mulching than under non-mulching. The herbicides had no effect on the growth and yield. In the sesame field, rate of weed emergence was 10 times lower in clear P.E.-mulching than in non-mulching. Weeding effect of alachlor, napropamide and diphenamid was higher under clear P.E.-mulching than under non-mulching. Germination percentage of sesame greatly decreased in non-mulching compared with in clear P.E.-mulching. The germination was inhibited by the treatment of herbicides. The inhibition effect was increased in the order of alachlor, napropamide, and diphenamid. The initial crop injury in treatment of herbicides was greater in non-mulching than in clear P.E.-mulching. The crop recovered from the injury and exhibited regrowth in clear P.E.-mulching except the alachlor treatment, but there was no recovery in non-mulching. There was no significant difference yield between herbicide treatment and hand weeding in non-mulching. Also, no significant difference was obseorbed between napropamide and diphenamid treatment and hand weeding in clear P.E.-mulching.

  • In puan area the environmental surveys were carried out at two farms of hard clam, Meretrix lusoria from April 1987 to November 1978 in order to know heather the farm environments could be rehabilitated for the cultivation of hard clam or not. The range of temperature of surface seawater was $10.7{\~}27.4^{\circ}C$, pH $7.6{\~}8.2$, salinity $22.3{\~}30.3$ ppt, COD $0.20{\~}4.71\;mg/{\ell}$, sulfide $0.04{\~}0.22\;{\mu}g-at./{\ell}$, suspended solid $34.8{\~}199.3\;mg/{\ell}$ chlorophyll a $3.71{\~}49.02\;mg/m^3$, TIN $2.01{\~}24.47\;{\mu}g-a5./{\ell}$, phosphate $0.60{\~}11.03\;{\mu}g-at./{\ell}$ and silicate $4.04{\~}476.36\;{\mu}g-at./{\ell}$. The range of temperature of substratum (bottom soil) was $14.2{\~}29.7^{\circ}C$, pH $8.3{\~}9.5$, water content of substratum was $0.28{\~}0.49\;mg/g$ dried mud, COD $2.80{\~}50.94\;mg/g$ dried mud, total organic matter $1.05{\~}1.97\%$ concentration of total Kjedhal nitrogen $31.9{\~}194.9\;{\mu}g./{\ell}$ dried mud, and sulfide $0.032{\~}0.133\;mg/g$ dried mud. Fine sand was dominant ranging over $92{\~}95\%$ and silt and clay was $2.8{\~}8.1\%$ of the composition of substratum. Some residual agricultural chemicals, ${\alpha},\;{\beta},\;{\gamma}$-BHC, heptachlor, heptachlor-epoxide, aldrin, DDE, DDT and dieldrin were detected in hard clams collected from Puan areas. Especialy, more chemical were detected during the period of rainfalls. From above results, it is considered that the hard clam frams were not yet recovered from deteriorated conditions for aquaculture.
