  • The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine the intellectual structure of data science. For this purpose, this research examined a total of 17,997 bibliographies on data science indexed in Web of Science(WoS) of Clarivate Analytics from 2012 to 2021. This research applied methods such as descriptive analysis, citation analysis, co-author network analysis, co-occurrence network analysis, bibliographic coupling analysis, and co-citation analysis. This research contributes to finding the research directions of future data science topics.

  • This study assesses research patterns and trends of library and information science(LIS) in Korea by applying bibliometric analysis. For the study, 2,400 peer-reviewed publications from 2001 to 2010(including conference proceedings) published by 159 LIS professors in Korea were analyzed by year, author, affiliation and journal. The study findings showed an increasing trend in collaboration(52.75% of total publications with single authors and 47.25% with multiple authors) among LIS professors in Korea, robust publication patterns of Korean LIS faculty(average 1.51 publications per year), and an increasing number in foreign publications(170 publications). The study results also suggested an internationalization of LIS in Korea. Specifically, the study found a higher rate of Korean LIS faculty with foreign degrees than in previous years as well as a higher publication rate of professors with international degrees. The analysis of publication patterns conducted by the study, which is a first step in our aim to establish a multi-faceted approach for assessing the impact of scholarly work, will be followed up with analysis of references and citations to evaluate the quality of publications.

  • A name is a key feature for distinguishing people, but we often fail to discriminate people because an author may have multiple names or multiple authors may share the same name. Such name ambiguity problems affect the performance of document retrieval, web search and database integration. Especially, in bibliography information, a number of errors may be included since there are different authors with the same name or an author name may be misspelled or represented with an abbreviation. For solving these problems, it is necessary to disambiguate the names inputted into the database. In this paper, we propose a method to solve the name ambiguity by using social networks constructed based on the relations between authors. We evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed system based on DBLP data that offer computer science bibliographic information.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine for redefining the concept of literacy in Library and Information Science research field and in public library services. For the purpose, literature review, bibliometric analysis and case study were conducted. Based on the results, this study proposed the concept of literacy as "a comprehensive ability to use a medium, information and knowledge for solving the problems people faces in order to understand particular subjects or situations they are in" and the concept of literacy service as "the services or programs offered by public libraries in order to develop their patrons' literacies." This research also suggests four new literacy service concepts for public library services: early literacy service, adult literacy service, digital literacy service, information literacy service.

  • The Korean Medical Journal (1930-1937) is the first Korean medical journal published by The Korean Medical Association, which Korean doctors established to resist Japanese medical organizations during the Japanese colonial period. Using the bibliometric research method for The Korean Medical Journal, this study aimed to analyze the journal as follows. First, the study analyzed the subject trends of medical research by extracting the MeSH terms from the title of the articles. Next, the study identified characteristics of authors, type of language used in the papers, publication year and countries of references included in the papers. Also, this study identified the researchers' interests by analyzing the frequency of keywords appearing in the roundtable titles. As a result of the research, infections, pathological symptoms and diseases of the digestive system were studied most often. Most authors belonged to Severance Union Medical College, and internal medicine and general surgery departments had the most authors. Most of the titles and texts of the papers were written in Korean and Chinese characters in combination. Of the 131 papers, only 40 contained abstracts, 22 of which were English abstracts, the most number. The study analyzed 1,103 references in the papers and found that the authors mainly cited the latest journals published in Japan, Germany, and the United States. The topics discussed the most in the roundtable talks were tuberculosis, neurasthenia, and gonorrhea in order. This research examined the history of the publication of The Korean medical journal. Also, it showed that Korean doctors accumulated their academic medical research results and contributed to improving medical conditions.

  • In this study, pathfinder network analysis has been carried out to identify subject domains of documents which cited articles in the ASIST Proceedings. This represents how articles in the ASIST Proceedings are flowed and used in what subjects areas. For this analysis, 240 documents were selected through a search of the Scopus database. The complete linkage clustering method was used to draw out 16 clusters from 240 documents. Through MDS and pathfinder network analysis, knowledge networks of clusters have been produced. As a result. articles in the ASIST Proceedings relating to knowledge management, bibliometrics, information retrieval and digital libraries have been cited actively by other publications. The most frequent citation flow type of ASIST proceedings was citation from proceedings(ASIST) to reviews(ARIST), via journals, and the most popular subject areas related to documents were bibliometrics.

  • Information behavior is an important area of research in library and information science (LIS) that has evolved over the last 75 years. The aim of this study is to investigate the recent trends of information behavior research by providing insights into emerging topical areas within information behavior. To conduct this study, the bibliographic data from Scopus was used, and the trends of information behavior were traced by using variations of key terms used in information behavior research, such as "information behavior", "information seeking behavior", and "information needs." In addition, the trends were analyzed in terms of content words in the title, highly cited journal articles, disciplinary categories, and author keywords. Information behavior research has its roots in LIS, but the findings of the study reveal that information behavior has expanded to other disciplines by intersecting a variety of topical areas. In particular, this study showed that information behavior in the health/medicine domain has become a predominant emerging topical area of research. In order to enhance our understanding of complex human behavior, future research should focus more on interdisciplinary aspects by measuring the scope of information behavior.
