  • 최근 폭발적으로 증가하는 대량의 정보를 효율적으로 관리하기 위해서 서버에 개별적으로 연결되던 저장장치를 고속의 전용 네트워크에 직접 연결하고 이를 여러 서버가 공유하는 SAN(Storage Area Network)이 등장했다. SAN을 보다 효과적으로 활용할 수 있도록 SAN 운영체제들은 여러 저장장치를 하나의 커다란 저장장치로 보이게 하는 저장장치 가상화를 지원한다. 저장장치 가상화의 핵심적인 역할을 하는 것이 바로 논리볼륨 관리자이다. 논리볼륨 관리자는 논리주소 블록을 실제 디스크의 물리블록으로 매핑시키는 매핑 관리자를 통해 가상화를 실현한다. 이 논문에서는 효율적인 논리볼륨 관리자를 위해 매핑 관리자와 자유공간 관리자의 기능 향상에 대한 방법을 찾고 이를 반영한 매핑 관리자와 자유공간 관리자를 설계하고 구현한다. 더불어 이 논문의 매핑 관리기법은 특정 시점의 볼륨이미지를 유지할 수 있는 스냅샷과 시스템을 정지시키지 않고 SAN에 디스크를 추가할 수 있는 온라인 재구성 기능을 지원한다.

  • SAN(Storage Area Network) was developed in response to the requirements of high availability of data, scalable growth, and system performance. In order to use the SAN more efficiently, most of the SAN operating software supports storage virtualization concepts that allow users to view physical storage devices of the SAN as a large volume. A logical volume manager plays a key role in storage virtualization. It realizes the storage virtualization by mapping logical addresses to physical addresses. In this paper, we design and implement an efficient and flexible mapping method for the logical volume manager. Additionally we also design and implement a free space management method for flexible mapping. Our mapping method supports a snapshot that preserves a volume image at certain time and on-line reorganization to allow users to add or remove storage devices to and from the SAN even while the system is running. To justify our mapping method, we compare it with the mapping method of the GFS (Global File System) through various experiments.

To support the snapshot and the on-line reorganization, most logical volume managers have used table based mapping methods. However, it is very difficult to manage mapping table because the mapping table is large in proportion to a storage capacity. In this paper, we design and implement an efficient and flexible hybrid mapping method based on mathematical equations. The mapping method in this paper supports a snapshot and on-line reorganization. The proposed snapshot and on-line reorganization are performed on the reserved area which is separated from data area of a volume. Due to this strategy normal I/O operations are not affected by snapshot and reorganization. Finally, we show the superiority of our proposed mapping method through various experiments.

In this thesis, we design and implement a freespace manager for logical volume manager. The freespace manager efficiently allocates physical blocks for logical blocks. Also, it processes space allocation requests for suports snapshots and reorganizations.

  • 현재 인터넷 환경은 다양한 멀티미디어 정보의 폭발적인 증가로 인해 정보의 효율적인 저장 및 관리, 가공을 위한 볼륨 관리자가 요구되고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 대용량의 데이터 관리를 요구하는 SAN (Storage Area Network)환경에서 대용량 저장 장치 구성을 위한 LDP(Logical Disk Pool)를 설계하고 그 성능을 평가하였다. LDP는 여러 개의 물리적 디스크를 물리적 개념이 아닌 논리적 저장 공간의 개념을 사용하여 관리함으로써, 기존 물리 디스크의 크기 제한과 확장성 문제를 해결하여 SAN환경에 적합한 대용량 저장장치 구성을 가능하게 한다.

  • The rapid growth of high speed multimedia services demands the large capacity of the server's storage that maintains the multimedia contents. Among the server's devices, the low I/O speed and physical or logical failure of storage device decrease the total performance of system. The continuous increase of multimedia contents require the flexibility of storage capacity. In order to solve the these problems, we propose the uses of software RAID and LVM techniques that provide the performance improvement and reliability of storage device and the flexibility of storage device respectively. In the LINUX 2.4 kernel, we implemented the reliable and flexible storage device and evaluated the performance of it.
