  • Focusing on native plants that have high possibility of being introduced as rooftop material, this study was conducted to investigate extensive and easy-to-manage rooftop garden and to raise the utilization of native plants by verifying their growing response to artificial substrate soil depth and irrigation period. The study was conducted from March to September in 2002. Plants tested included Chrysanthemum zawadskii, Sedium middendorffianum, Thymus quinquecostatus, Allium senescens, and Dianthus superbus. Regarding soil depth, it was 5 cm and 10 cm. Irrigation period was non-irrigation, 1-week, 2-weeks, and 3- weeks, Its result is as follows; 1. In case of Sedum middendorffianum Maxim, mortality rate was 0% regardless of soil depth and irrigation period making it very suitable material for rooftop garden. 2. In case of Allium senescens L., mortality rate was 0% regardless of soil depth and irrigation period making it very suitable material for rooftop garden. Therefore, Provided that fertilizing is managed well, it is a plant that can be highly utilized.3. In case of Chrysanthemum zawadskii Herb. Subsp. (Nakai) Y. Lee Stat., the growth of top was lower in 10cm than in 5cm and it grew well in 10cm. When utilizing for rooftop garden, it would be desirable to keep minimum viable soil depth at over 10cm. If there is enough rainfall, soil and soil depth seem to have greater effect on growth than irrigation period does. 4. In case of Diauthus superbus L. var. longicalycinus (Maxim) Williams, rooting rate and growth were better in 10cm than in 5cm. Therefore, it is desirable to keep minimum soil depth at over 10cm. 5. In case of Thymus quinquecostatus Celak, the growth of top and flowering were better in 10cm than in 5cm. Therefore, it seems desirable to have minimum viable soil depth to be over 10cm. In conclusion, the most suitable species for rooftop garden are Sedium middendorffianum and Allium senescens in this experiment. However, Chrysanthemum zwadskii, Thymus quinquecostatus, and Dianthus chinensis also can be utilized greatly when irrigation is managed regularly in artificial mixed soil over 10cm.

  • The resource plants of northern region in Gapyeong-gun were investigated 7 times from Apr. 2007 to Oct. 2007. In the result of survey, the flora of this area, depend on voucher specimens, consist of 480 taxa totally; 94 families, 286 genera, 412 species, 4 subspecies, 52 varieties and 12 forms. The Resource plants in this area were categorized by their use into edible 177, pasturing 136, medicinal 124, stainable 69, ornamental 133, afforest 24, timber 10, fiber 6, industrial 2 taxa and unknown use plants 72, respectively. There were remarkable plants such as 14 taxa of Korean endemic plants, 85 taxa of specific plants which were designated by the Ministry of Environment, and 12 taxa of rare and endangered plants of Korea Forest Service. Furthermore, 22 taxa of naturalized plants 4.6% were also observed in this area and Urban Index (UI) was 8.2%. The vegetation status of investigated area was comparatively well conserved, but the degree of UI could be increased rapidly by the climbers, development of forest road. Therefore, the systems for conservation need to prepared for the effective management of forest, and the special plans need to control the number of climbers and visitors.

  • This study was carried out to suggest an experimental base in selecting the cold tolerance of plants. The cold tolerance of the plants were subject to laboratory low temperature treatments and cold processing time were evaluated using both electrolyte leakage and regrowth test. The Logistic model of nonlinear regression analysis was used to evaluate the lethal temperatures that were predicted with the range of $-16.1{\sim}-24.4^{\circ}C$. The order of low-temperature resistance was Sedum reflexum > S. spurium > Ophiopogon japonicus > S. album > S. takevimense > Dianthus chinensis. At the lowest temperature of $13.4^{\circ}C$ the electrolyte leakage value of the plants were lower than 50% demonstrating that they could be applied stably to the roof installed in Korea during the winter with the lowest temperature of $-13.5^{\circ}C$.

  • Research was initiated to find out acid drainage neutralizing techniques for ecological vegetative growth on the acid drainage slope. Four different acid drainage neutralizing techniques [no treatment, limestone layer treatment, phosphate treatment, and limestone layer + phosphate treatment] were treated on the acid drainage slope. There was a significant difference observed in treated acid neutralizing techniques for acidity, surface coverage rate, death rate and plant root status. Treated acid neutralizing techniques were effective for neutralizing acidity and vegetative growth in order of [first: limestone layer + phosphate treatment, second: phosphate treatment, third: limestone layer treatment and fourth: no treatment]. The limestone layer and the phosphate treatments were effective for neutralizing acidity and vegetative growth, respectively. However, the phosphate treatment was more effective compared to the limestone layer treatment on the acid drainage slope. We figured out that the phosphate treatment is more effective for neutralizing acidity and vegetative growth because of coating effect of sulfides.

  • The study describes on the identification and morphological characteristics of each species, ecological characteristics and propagation techniques, and developing utilization measures of the Parthenocissus plants for environment conservation and revegetation of the babe rock-slopes. The following species and varieties are disscussed in this study; Parthenocissus tricuspidata (S. et Z.) Planch. var. veitchii Rehd. var. lowii Rehd. var. pupurea Hort. Parthenocissus quiquefolia (L.) Planch. var. engelmanni Rehd. var. saint-pauli Rehd. var. hirsuta Planch. Parthenocissus henryana Diels et Gilg. Parthenocissus thomsoni Planch. Parthenocissus heptaphylla Small. Parthenocissus inserta (Kern.) K. Fritsch. Parthenocissus laetevirens Rehd. Parthenocissus himalayana Planch. These are, in general, all vigorous self-clinging climbers that will quickly cover a wall and bare rock surfaces with a dense network of branch growths and beautiful green leaves which change to shades of scarlet and crimson before they fall in Autumn. Parthenocissus tricuspidata out of 8 species in the genus Parthenocissus is the most useful plant for the environment conservation including the bare rock-slope revegetation and for the production of food and shelter for wildlifes. This native of Korea clings by means of small rootlike holdfasts (adhesive discs) and holds (tendrils) to stone work or any other solid support, tenaciously.

  • Purpose : This study is to develop walls using wall recording technology applied on roofs to prevent fire spread in traditional markets. Method : The spray head installed on the developed wall was designed so that the fire does not spread to adjacent buildings after being used for plants. In addition, a spray head was attached to the upper section and some sections for the growth of plants planted on the wall to prevent the spread of fire. Results : These technologies suggested the development of walls that can be installed at the upper level of buildings, such as traditional markets, and separate isolation facilities were not necessary because they are integrated with structures and sprinklers. In addition, sprinklers can perform both the plant spray and fire spread prevention functions. It is believed that this is the only alternative technology proposed in Korea to prevent the spread of fire. Conclusion : In this study, the wall design, designed directly to derive the quantitative performance of the fire spread reduction effect, demonstrated the fire suppression method of the wall system, the durability of the wall itself, and the flame retardability performance.
