Influence of Electrode Position on Performance of Sparkjet Actuator Using Numerical Analysis (수치해석을 이용한 전극 위치에 따른 스파크제트 액츄에이터의 성능 연구)

  • Sparkjet actuator, also known as plasma synthetic jet actuator, which is a kind of active flow control actuator is considered as being high possibility for the supersonic flow control due to ejecting stronger jet compared to the other active flow control actuators. Sparkjet actuator generates high temperature and high pressure flow inside the cavity by using arc plasma and leads momentum by ejecting such flow through orifice or nozzle. In this research, numerical calculation of sparkjet actuator with respect to the location of electrodes which exists inside the cavity is conducted and the change of the performance of sparkjet actuator is suggested. As the location of electrodes goes closer to the bottom of the cavity, impulse is increased and the average pressure inside the cavity maintains higher. When the location of electrode is 25% and 75% of the entire cavity height, impulse is 2.515 μN·s and 2.057 μN·s, respectively. Each impulse is changed by about 9.92% and -10.09% compared to when the location of electrodes is 50% of the entire cavity height.

  • 수중방전을 환경분야에 적용하기 위한 플라즈마 부상법이 개발되었다. 플라즈마 부상법은 물 속에서 발생시킨 플라즈마가 가지고 있는 주요특성 중 물리적 특징인 쇼크웨이브, UV조사, 버블생성 등과 화학적 특징인 OH라디칼 및 염소산화물 생성 등을 이용하여 물 속에 존재하는 용존성 및 입자성 물질을 부상분리 기법으로 제거하는 공법이다. 유기물을 제거하는 기작으로는 침전, 여과, 분해 등이 있고, 이를 구현하기 위한 공정으로 중력침강법, 부상분리법, 멤브레인법, 미생물법 등이 있다. 이 중에서 가압공기부상법은 침강법에 비해 부지면적을 적게 소모하고 처리시간이 50% 이상 감소되는 특징이 있다. 가압공기부상법은 물 속에 공기를 과포화시킨 후 노즐을 통해 재분사할 때 발생하는 압력차에 의해 미세기포가 발생함을 이용하여 유기물을 분리하는 공법이다. 그러나, 가압용 장비 및 반송수가 필요하고, 미생물분리는 불가능한 단점이 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 미생물살균과 유기물 분리가 동시에 일어나는 플라즈마를 이용한 부상분리기법을 개발하였다. 본 연구에서는 난분해성 용존유기물인 휴믹산 100 mg/L의 플라즈마 공기부상법에 의한 제거능을 확인하였다. 용존성 휴믹산을 입자성 물질로 전환하여 플록을 형성시키고자 알루미늄설페이트(Al2(SO4) $3{\cdot}18H2O$)를 100 mg/L 주입하였고, 침출수와 같이 염도가 높은 물을 모사하고자 35 g/L의 염화나트륨을 첨가한 상태에서 방전을 실시하였다. 방전에 사용된 전원은 EESYS사에서 제작한 펄스형 고전압 전원장치를 사용하였고 최대 15 kW의 출력 중 6 kW의 전력을 인가하였다. 전극 한 개는 2 mm 텅스텐봉을 세라믹튜브로 감싼 구조로 총 사용전극은 28개이다. 전극 한 개당 대략 200 Watt의 전력이 소모되며 이 때 최대의 버블이 생성됨을 확인하였다. 전극 1개에서 생성되는 버블의 부피는 14 mL/min 로 측정되었다. 버블의 크기는 평균 70 um이고 가압공기부상법에서 최적공기크기로 제시하고 있는 40~80 um 의 버블은 약 80% 가량 생성된다. 본 연구에서 사용된 반응시스템에서의 물의 높이는 약 500 mm 이고 전체 40 L의 수조가 3개의 벽으로 분리되어 4개의 수조로 분리되었다. 각 수조는 하부에 7개의 전극을 포함하고 있다. 플라즈마 발생시 생성되는 기포는 약 1분 방전 후에 포화농도에 도달하며 방전종료 후 약 4분간 수체 내에 남아있게 된다. 이를 공정에 적용하여 1분 방전 및 4분 휴지의 순서로 플라즈마를 인가하였다. 휴믹산 용액의 유량을 2 lpm 으로 운전하였을 때 최종 처리율은 94% 이고 이때의 대장균 살균능은 99%이다.

Patent Technologies for Reducing Micro-Dust (미세먼지 저감을 위한 특허기술들)

  • Four developed patents have applied for a new type of Composite Cyclone Scrubber followed by the previous research (Cho and Kim, 2017), including dust reducing fan with filters. Regarding target installation and maintenance cost, 64% reduction for investment costs (6.2 billion won vs. 17 billion won) compared to existing road pollution reduction system, while social benefit costs increase by 43% compared to existing road pollution reduction measures (72.6 billion won vs. 50.8 billion won). The composition of the device is an air blower type spiral guide vane, and an injection pressure collecting dust efficiency. A nozzle varies Injection angle and contact range, spray liquid species (waterworks, salty water). The proposed patent tests are circulation water Time-by-Time Spray and collected 41.4% more increased micro dust since the sprayed water meets contaminated gas due to the 45° degree colliding, which is 141% increased conventional dust collector. (Ratio of collection over 85%). As regards the source of collection liquid, circulated rainwater and well water, we expect a huge amount of energy and economically saved eco-friendly system in our patent. Finally, the guided vane and metal filter reduced over 90% micro-dust, while sprayed water cleans the vane and filters, resultantly minimizing the maintenance budget. The preliminary evaluations of the developed design make it possible to reduce not only cheaper maintenance budget due to the characteristic water spraying but the cost of water comes from mainly rain and underground.

  • To develop SEWGS (sorption enhanced water gas shift) system using dry $CO_2$ absorbent for pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture, hydrodynamic characteristics of $CO_2$ absorbents were measured and investigated. The minimum fluidization velocity of $CO_2$ absorbent was measured and the effects of the operating conditions were investigated to operate the system at bubbling fluidized bed condition. The minimum fluidization velocity decreased as pressure and temperature increased. Moreover, the minimum fluidization velocity decreased as column diameter increased. The effects of operating conditions on the solid circulation rate were measured and investigated to select appropriate operating conditions for continuous $CO_2$ capture and regeneration. The measured solid circulation rates were ranged between 10 and 65 kg/h and increased as the solid injection velocity, gas velocity in the regeneration reactor, and solid height increased.

Experimental Observation of Instability of Supersonic Submerged Jets (수중초음속제트의 불안정성에 대한 실험적 고찰)

  • An experimental investigation on the structure and dynamic behavior of two dimensional over-expanded air jets exiting into water was carried out. The hish speed digital video imaging and static pressure distribution measurement were made to characterize the structure and time-dependant behavior of the jets. Mach number at the jet exit was 2.0 and was slightly less than the value predicted by the ideal nozzle calculation. Variance of jet spreading angle at different stagnation condition was measured as a function of mass flow rate. Periodic nature of the air jet distortion in water was observed and the frequency of the repetition was approximately 5-6 Hz for all cases tested. Three characteristic length scales were defined to characterize jet structure. $L_1$, maximum width of the plume when the periodic instability occurs, $L_2$, width of the jet where secondary reverse flow entrained jet flow and $L_3$, distance from the jet exit to the location where entrainment of the secondary reverse flow occurs. The ratio of $L_1$ and $L_2$ decreased with increasing stagnation pressure, i.e. mass flow rate. $L_3$ increased with increasing stagnation pressure. The temporal behavior of static pressure measurements also showed peak around frequency of 5, which corresponds the frequency obtained by visual measurements

An Experimental Study on Thrust of Ground and High Altitude by Hydrogen Peroxide/Kerosene Engine (과산화수소-케로신 엔진을 이용한 지상 및 고고도 추력에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Ground and high altitude simulated combustion experiments were conducted using a liquid rocket engine with hydrogen peroxide and kerosene as the propellant. A ground and high altitude simulated combustion test facility was constructed by installing a high altitude model diffuser and TMS (Thrust Measuring System) on a vertical combustion test bench. The thrust characteristics according to altitude were investigated using the combustion test equipment. The diffuser was designed on a 1:4.8 scale to verify the characteristics of the high diffusing diffuser and starting pressure. The cold flow tests were conducted using nitrogen gas, and the performance characteristics and starting characteristics of the scale down diffuser were verified. A diffuser and TMS were installed on the vertical combustion test bench, and the thrust correction equations for the system resistance were derived. The thrust correction equations were derived from the step test and vacuum step test before the actual hot firing test. Nozzles with an operating altitude of 10km were designed. Hot firing tests were conducted to analyze the thrust characteristics according to the operating altitude changes. The actual thrust was calculated using each correction equation with the thrust value measured by the TMS.

A Study for Remediation of Railroad Ballast Gravel Using Dry Washing Method (건식세척기술을 이용한 철도 도상자갈 정화 연구)

  • This study proposes a newly developed dry washing method for removing pollutants such as total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and oxidized iron from the surface of ballast gravel. A batch-type dry washing method showed a good performance in a previous study. In this study, a continuous-type dry washing system, instead of a batch-type system, was prepared to improve the efficiency of the system. A drier and a separator were also applied to this system as pre-treatment process, and the performance of this system was evaluated. In this experiment, blasting media was blasted on the polluted gravels through 12 nozzles by a pressure of $5-6kg/cm^2$ for 20-30 mins to remove TPH and oxidized iron. It was found to be possible to remove 80-90% of TPH and oxidized iron by using this system. Several ways to improve the performance were suggested in this study.

Evaluation of Dust Removal Efficiency on Roadway Structures Using Ultrafine Bubble Water Jet (초미세기포 water jet을 이용한 도로 시설물 분진 제거 효율 평가)

  • A road structure washing vehicle equipped with a 4 HP, 80 LPM ultrafine bubble generator was used to clean a tunnel wall and the surface of the surrounding structure, consisting of concrete and tiles, in a heavy traffic area around an apartment complex in the city. Ultrafine bubbles were generated by supplying air at 2 to 3 LPM and using a specially designed nozzle, whereas fine bubbles made by an impeller in a gas-liquid mixing self-priming pump were produced with an average diameter of 165.4 nm and 6.81 × 107 particles mL-1. Using a high pressure washer gun that can perform high-pressure cleaning at 150 bar and 30 LPM, ultrafine bubbles were used to wash dust adsorbed on the surface of the road structures. The experimental analysis was divided into before and after washing. The samples were analyzed by applying ISO 8502-3 to measure surface contamination of dust adsorbed on the surface. Using the transparent tape attached to the surface, the removal rate was calculated by measuring the weight of the dust, and the number of particles was calculated using the gravimetric method and the software, ImageJ. The results of the experiment showed that the number of dust particles adsorbed on the tile wall surface before and after washing were 3,063 ± 218 particles mL-1 and 20 ± 5 particles mL-1, respectively, with weights of 580 ± 82 mg and 13 ± 4 mg. Particles on the surface of the concrete structure before and after washing were 8,105 ± 1,738 particles mL-1 and 39 ± 6 particles mL-1, respectively, with weights of 1,448 ± 190 mg and 118 ± 32 mg.

Development of the Spark Torch Igniter for the 450 N-scale Methane-Oxygen Rocket Engine (450 N급 메탄-산소 로켓 엔진을 위한 스파크 토치 점화기 개발)

  • Adopting an engine igniter with high efficiency and ignition performance is essential for reliable operation of liquid rocket engines. In this study, we developed a spark torch igniter for a 450 N-scale methane-oxygen liquid rocket engine by conducting numerical analyses, igniter manufacturing and validation. Specifically, we conducted a parametric study for maximizing the enthalpy at the igniter exit, specifically by adjusting the mass flow rate, nozzle area ratio, fuel-oxidizer mixture ratio, and the igniter length-to-diameter. The heat transferred via the igniter nozzle exit was computed using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. We also manufactured and tested the igniter based on a deduced design to confirm ignition performance of the designed spark torch igniter. The igniter developed through this study could contribute to the development of practical propulsion systems such as upper-stage engines of small launch vehicles.

Sensitivity analysis of grid size for bubble flow field analysis using image analysis methods (영상분석기법 기반 기포유동장 해석을 위한 격자의 민감도 분석)

  • This study aims to investigate the feasibility of using image analysis methods to examine the flow characteristics of air bubbles discharged underwater. A bubble screen was created using multiple nozzles in a laboratory flume filled with stagnant water. The flow characteristics of the bubbles were analyzed, and the suitability of the analysis method was evaluated. Several parameters, such as projection area ratio and depth ratio, were defined to conduct laboratory experiments and analyze the flow characteristics of the bubbles. Correlation and regression analyses were performed to assess the relationships between various variables. Specifically, the correlation between the bubble's projection area and its rising speed across eight water depth ratios was examined. The results indicated that as the depth ratio increased, the bubble size exhibited a linear increase with a strong correlation as it rose to the water surface due to pressure effects. Regarding the sensitivity of different grid sizes in the ten analysis grids when applying image analysis methods, it was observed that the sensitivity to grid size based on the projection area ratio (0.09~0.96) was not significant. These findings suggest that image analysis techniques can be effectively utilized to observe the flow characteristics of bubbles.
