  • This study recognizes the seriousness of mental health damage in the aged these days including stress, depression, suicidal ideation and intends to verify structural relationship between mental health and those expected to affect it such as health behavior, quality of life, and subjective consciousness of health. According to the results of this study, first, as the aged's quality of life is higher, it has more effect to reduce stress, depression, or suicidal ideation. Also, quality of life enhances subjective consciousness of health and improves mental health. Second, although health behavior measured by smoking, problematic drinking, obesity, or moderate exercise and sleep did not show direct effect on mental health, it has indirect effect on it with subjective consciousness of health as mediation. Based on the result of this study, in order to improve the aged's mental health, it is needed to consider the enhancement of their life quality in advance and make systematic efforts to change their health behavior.

  • This study examined the factors affecting the preference for the elderly's mental health services utilization in rural areas. A behavior model developed by Andersen and Newman provided an analytical framework to determine the factors affecting service utilization preferences among 335 elderly people as research subjects. The authors found that the preferences for mental health service utilization were significantly related to the level of education, living alone, presence of grandchildren, participation in social activities, and recognition about the services. Based on the findings, this study suggests that more mental health services for the elderly in rural areas be further developed and strengthened. Also, the elderly who lives alone and lives with grandchildren should have a priority in policy consideration. Multiple approaches are suggested to increase the awareness of mental health services and participation social activities for those older people.

In case of eating patterns, 'poor eating' in old-old was higher than young old's. Regression analysis showed that middle-intensity physical activity and eating patterns were associated with mental health of the elderly. Based on the results, it is necessary to develop a differentiated nursing intervention program suitable for the elderly by age.

  • This study aims at investigating the major symptoms that help family carers detect mental illness in elderly patients. Another purpose of this study is to empirically verify the major factors determining the utilization of mental health services with a focus on family carers. The results of this study are as follows. First, the most commonly detected symptoms that caused the family carers to suspect mental illness in the elderly patients were memory decline and other forms of cognitive function decline. Second, the determinants of the elderly's utilization of mental health services included the patient's long-term care insurance level, the age of the family carer, the period of care, the level stress associated with the provision of care felt by the carer, his understanding of geriatric mental illness, and the level of perception about community mental health services. Based on these findings, this study suggests policies and practical implications for the early detection of and response to elderly mental health problems and the utilization of related services from the viewpoint of the family carers of the elderly.

  • This study was aimed to examine the association between resilience and mental health among individuals aged 65 and older. The number of the sample was 2,004 older people living in Chuncheon city. The dependent variables were measured with depression and mental well-being. Depression was measured by the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression(CES-D) 10 items. Mental well-being was measured by Korean version of the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form(K-MHC-SF). The independent variable, resilience, was measured with the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale(CD-RISC). Adjusted for age, gender, region, education, living arrangement, religion, employment, income, and self-rated health, a logistic regression analysis result showed that resilience was negatively associated with depression among older adults. On the other hand, a multiple regression analysis result showed that resilience was positively associated with mental well-being among older adults. The study findings suggest that resilience can promote mental health in later life. Implications for older adults suffering from mental health problems are also discussed.

  • As the socialization of care is progressing rapidly, the necessity of community-level mental health intervention for older adults with severe social isolation and depression is also increasing. In line with the reorganization of the Individualized Support Services for Older Adults in 2020, the social relations revitalization project for the elderly living alone, which had been conducted as a pilot project in 2014~19, was expanded and reorganized into a separate specialized project within the Individualized Support Services for Older Adults. The purpose of this study is to enhance understanding of the specialized service and to clarify its conceptual framework. The characteristics and conceptual framework of the specialized service were examined through a review of the process of institutionalization of the specialized service, which included analysis of related literature and the pilot projects. Finally, it discussed what to consider in order for the specialized service to proceed as intended in the future, focusing on a couple of situations that occur at the fields.

  • The purpose of the Convergence study is to identify the factors of health-related quality of life for the elderly and provide the basic data needed to improve the quality of life for the elderly. The objects of the study were 1,367 people aged 65 or older living in Korea out of the original data for the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Year 2017). Multiple regression analyses was performed by using the SPSS/PC 21.0 statistical program for the purpose of the study. According to the study, mental health and then physical activity were the most influential factors in health-related quality of life. Based on these results, we found that health education is highly important to provide customized health care services and to build the correct lifestyle in order to improve the quality of health-related life. Therefore, follow-up research is needed to identify the effectiveness of developing and applying diverse programs to enhance mental health and physical activity of the elderly in the future.
