The elderly suicide has become a social problem, and the need for academic and practice-based knowledge for preventing elderly suicide has been addressed. Unlike previous literature focusing on identifying risk factors, this study aimed to address protective ones which help to overcome suicidal behavior among older adults. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how older adults get over being suicidal and get back to life, and to identify what helps them during the process. Both in-depth interviews with 35 elderly with suicide attempts and field notes were analyzed through thematic analysis. The older adults described a pathway to rediscovering a 'will to live' that was related to a 'mind's incline' and included two kinds of protective factors. Based on the findings, it addresses the implication for the elderly suicide prevention utilizing protective factors.

The aims of this study were verifying the influences of social support(family, friend, community) on perceived burdensomeness and hopelessness and mediating effects of perceived burdensomeness and hopelessness between social support and suicidal ideation. In results, family support reduced suicidal ideation of the elderly through mediating role of perceived burdensomeness as well as serial mediating effect of perceived burdensomeness and hopelessness. Friend support reduced suicidal ideation of the elderly through parallel and serial mediating effects of perceived burdensomeness and hopelessness. Community support reduced suicidal ideation of the elderly through mediating role of hopelessness. Social support show not direct effect but indirect effect on suicidal ideation through reduction of negative influencing factor(burdensomeness, hopelessness). In conclusion, we proposed it were needed that various efforts which improve the relation between family members in the age of nuclear family and ageing era, social policy support which development social network of the elderly, and the efforts which keep informed the social policy support of the community.
The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of loneliness and suicidal ideation and the difference of them according to character type in the elderly. The study involved 149 the elderly, 65 years and over, attending community senior centers and social welfare centers. Data were collected from May to June, 2013 using the structured questionnaire. According to the findings, the means of loneliness and suicidal ideation were 2.0(${\pm}0.5$) and 1.5(${\pm}0.6$) respectively and they were below the median. In character type, percentage of the active integrated coper was 67.1% and next was the dependent passive type, the self-negating undercoper, and the failing overcoper. Loneliness and suicidal ideation of the active integrated coper were lower than them of the failing overcoper and the self-negating undercoper in elderly. There was positive correlation between loneliness and suicidal ideation. It is meaningful that the study results will be provided for understanding of elderly' mental health. Based on the results, the differentiated intervention considered of character type should be developed and provided for decreasing the loneliness and suicidal ideation in elderly.
Using data from 2011 Elderly Living Condition Survey database, this study analyzed risk factors for suicide ideation of Korean elderly persons. The analysis sample consists of 10,003 cases. The main purpose of this research was to explore the effects of social quality factor on suicide ideation of Korean elderly persons. Analysis results show that gender, age, area of residence, living alone, subjective standard of living, activities of daily living(ADLs), and geriatric depression are significant predictors of suicide ideation. Key findings are that social quality factor such as experiencing feeling hurt from others' words and actions like avoiding conversations, disregarding one's opinions, pretending to be not heard, getting irritated, grumbling, etc. has the largest effects on suicide ideation. Analysis results imply that without improving social quality, it would not be possible to lower elderly suicide rate.
The main purposes of this study are to describe regional differentials of the rate and to explore factors impacting on the regional differentials among the elderly's suicide rate in the Republic of Korea. Suicide data among 16 provinces from 2000 to 2008 were used for the statistical analyses. Six independent variables, such as crude divorce rate, GRDP per capita, welfare budget proportion, number of leisure facilities, number of medical and housing welfare facilities, and number of sports facilities are introduced for the multiple regression analyses. Elderly suicide rate, female elderly's suicide rate, and male elderly's suicide rate are used for the dependent variables. The findings of this study are as follows: Elderly's suicide rate has been increased constantly since 2000 and regional differentials of the elderly's suicide have been existed over time. According to the multiple regressions analyses, number of sports facilities(${\beta}$=-521), welfare budget proportion, and number of leisure facilities(${\beta}$=-219) have shown statistically significant negative relationships with the elderly's suicide rate. On the other hand, number of medical facilities(${\beta}$=0.550), crude divorce rate(${\beta}$=0336) have shown statistically significant positive relationships with the elderly's suicide rate in the Republic of Korea. Finally, some policy implications for alleviating the elderly's suicide rate are introduced and discussed.
The government has been promoting suicide prevention policies, but the elderly suicide rate has still not improved. This study focused on the role of local governments in solving suicide problems and analyzed three-year data from 2015 to 2017 at local governments level to investigate the relationship between suicide prevention policies and elderly suicide rates. Multiple regression analysis and logistic regression analysis was conducted to control social capital factors, demographic factors, and medical use factors that can affect the elderly suicide rate. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that suicide prevention ordinances were enacted and suicide prevention centers were established in areas with high suicide rates. In areas with high suicide rates, the suicide rate decreases if the elapsed period is long after the establishment of the center. From the perspective of suicide rates, it was analyzed that the local welfare support system was more affected. Accordingly, it was confirmed that the suicide prevention policy should be established in connection with the reinforcement of welfare policies
Elderly suicide rates tend to be high in Korea. Suicide by the elderly is no longer a personal problem; consequently, further research on risk and regional factors is necessary. Disease mapping in epidemiology estimates spatial patterns for disease risk over a geographical region. In this study, we use a simultaneous conditional autoregressive model for spatial correlations between neighboring areas to estimate standard mortality ratios and mapping. The method is illustrated with cause of death data from 2006 and 2010 to analyze regional patterns of elderly suicide in Korea. By considering spatial correlations, the Bayesian spatial models, mean educational attainment and percentage of the elderly who live alone was the significant regional characteristic for elderly suicide. Gibbs sampling and grid method are used for computation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing suicidal ideation among the elderly over 60 years old living in the community centered on sleep and depression. A total of 210 elderly people living in a metropolitan city were surveyed about suicidal ideation, sleep pattern (sleep time, quality of sleep) and depression. Data analysis showed that 14.3% of the subjects were seniors with a high suicidal ideation, 23.3% were sleeping less than 5 hours, 17.6% were poor sleep quality, and 33.3% were depressed. According to multiple logistic regression analysis, the factors influencing suicidal ideation were identified as depression (OR=6.889, 95% CI=2.679-17.712), sleep quality (OR=3.770, 95% CI=1.469-9.679), and gender (OR=3.080, 95% CI=1.266-7.491). These three factors accounted for 31.6% of suicidal ideation variables. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that reducing the depression and improving the quality of sleep in consideration of gender should be an essential strategy for the elderly in the community to reduce the suicidal ideation.
The purpose of this study is to classify the old into the old people as Young-old(Age 65-74) and Old-old(Older than 75) Elderly in Korea and is to check the factors influencing on the suicidal ideation based on eco-system approach. For the research data, the survey data of actual condition of the old people in 2014 was used. The samples of analysis in this study are the Young-old people who have spouse Old-old people, which are in total 6, 201. In order to check the characteristics of suicidal ideation of the Young-old people and Old-old people, Chi-square analysis was implemented and binomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to check the influencing factors of suicidal Ideation of Young-old and Old-old Elderly. As a result of analysis, there were significant difference in the factors influencing on suicidal ideation of the Young-old people and the Old-old people. The variables in terms of the sociology of population among personal system factors have affected more to the suicidal ideation of Old-old people than the Young-old people. Variables in terms of health have influenced on the Old-old people and the variables in terms of economy have significantly affected to the Young-old people. It has been suggested that the conflict of conjugality and marital conflict affect to the suicidal ideation of Young- old people however it has been appeared that the Old-old people are significantly affected not only by the conjugality but also by the relationship with children. In order to reduce the suicidal ideation of the old people, the customized approach per group of the old people has been presented.
Elderly suicide problem has become worse in South Korea. With a rapid aging of the population, the trend of suicide among the elderly is expected to accelerate, preventing elderly suicide has been considered an important societal problem. Thus, we aim to investigate various factors that explain suicidal ideation and to develop a predictive model for suicidal ideation in the context of elderly people in South Korea. To this end, this study contributes to addressing the elderly suicide problem. By using seven-year panel data from the Korea Welfare Panel Survey, we extract various potential causal factors for elderly suicidal ideation based on interpersonal theory of suicide and social disorganization theory. Then a panel logit model was employed to assess the impacts of potential factors on suicidal ideation and deep learning and machine learning algorithms were used to develop a predictive model for suicidal ideation of elderly people. The results of our study provide practical implications for preventing elderly suicide by identifying causal factors of suicidal ideation and a high suicidal risk group of the elderly. This study sheds light on synergy of mixed methodology and provides various academic implications.
