  • This study compared how falls can be reduced in disabled elderly people by using the Otago exercise program and ascertained the program's effects on physical function and psychological recovery. The subjects were 30 people, and were assigned to two groups. The experimental group had 17 people, and the other was the control group that had 13 people. The experimental group attended the 50-minute program twice a week for 12 weeks. The outcome measures for lower extremity muscle strength, postural balance, flexibility, and self-efficacy were tested at the pre-test and post-test phases. In the analysis, general characteristics were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Physical function and self-efficacy were analyzed by independent T-test between the two groups, and correspondence T-tests were used within the two groups. The result of this study demonstrated that the experimental group showed significant increases in lower extremity muscle strength, static balance, flexibility and dynamic balance, and self-efficacy showed a small increase in the experimental group. But the control group showed significant decreases in static balance, flexibility and fall efficacy. The control group also showed decreases in lower extremity strength and dynamic balance. So the results of this study proved that the Otago exercise program brought about positive changes to improve physical function and psychological function to help prevent disabled elderly people from falling.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate relations among the quality of life, health states, physical functions, cognitive functions, and social supports of the elderly at care facilities. The subjects include the elderly that were living in care facilities in some urban areas and aged 65 or older. The data of total 260 old people were used in analysis. Collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. The elderly at care facilities, who were considered as physically and cognitive vulnerable, scored higher means on quality of life when they were satisfied with the length of stay and sleeping state, had higher subjective health states, had no tooth inconvenience and forgetfulness, suffered from a lower level of depression, had better cognitive functions, and received higher social supports. Quality of life had correlations with the sleeping state(r=-.20, p<.001), subjective health state(r=-.24, p<.001)s, depression(r=-.30, p<.001), and social supports(r=.30, p<.001). Social supports(${\beta}=.30$, p<.001), depression(${\beta}=-.25$, p<.001), subjective health states(${\beta}=-.22$, p<.001), length of stay(${\beta}=-.22$, p<.001), and sleeping state(${\beta}=-.12$, p=.025) turned out to predict the quality of life of the elderly at care facilities and have close relations with it. In short, the quality of life of the elderly is related to many different factors at care facilities. The findings indicate that nursing interventions and managements for quality of life require a mental and social approach or a whole person approach with a focus on the understanding of individual senior citizens rather than on physical activities and diseases.

  • This study is a descriptive study conducted to find out the predictive factors according to the level of the frailty of the communitydwelling older adult in a rural area. Data were collected from 400 older adults aged 65 years or older living in rural areas of Gyeongsangnam-do from October 2019 to March 2020. Data were analyzed using logistic regression to examine the predictive factors according to the level of frailty. The results showed that 27.8% for robust older adults, 30.9% for pre-frailty older adults, and 41.3% for frailty older adults. As a result of analyzing the predictive factors according to the level of frailty, the predictors from the robust stage to the pre-frailty stage were grip strength, nutritional status, and depression. The predictive factors for entering the pre-frailty stage into the frailty stage were gender, nutritional status, physical performance ability, and depression. Also, it was found that the predictive factors for entering from the robust stage to the frailty stage were sex, occupation, nutritional status, physical performance ability, and depression. Through this study, it was possible to understand the level of the frailty of the older adults living in rural communities and the effects of multidimensional variables. These results can be used as basic data necessary to find a way to prevent and manage the progression of frailty among older adults in rural areas.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between upper limb muscle strength and cognitive function in older Korean adults. A total of 130 Community-dwelling older adults, who were able to independently conduct activities of daily living, participated in the study. We assessed upper limb muscle strength using a handgrip strength and arm curl test, and their cognitive function using a Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) and general practitioner assessment of cognition (GPCOG) tests. Out of 130 participants, 26 (20%) had normal cognitive functions, while 104 older adults (80%) had mild cognitive impairments (MCI). Handgrip strength was significantly different between older adults with and without MCI (p<.05) and was related to MoCA and GPCOG (p<.05). In the result, there is a correlation between physical ability and cognitive function of the older adults. Therefore, it is necessary to develop exercise program to improve mental health.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to examine fear of falling, depression, physical fitness, and physical activity and further to identify the factors that predict physical activity among community dwelling elders. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive survey. Participants were 153 community dwelling elders from G city. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA, and multinominal logistic regression analysis. Results: Activity levers were coded as inactive, minimal activity and enhancing physical active. Thirty-three point three percent reported inactivity, forty-seven point seven percent reported minimal activity and nineteen percent reported health enhancing physical activity. There were significant differences in physical activity relative to gender, age, falling experience, perceived health, and living situation. Further, there was significant difference in fear of falling, depression, and physical fitness by physical activity. For instance, Fear of falling (OR=1.04, p=.014) was a significant predicting factor for physical activity, In contrast for the enhancing physical active the variables of gender (OR=0.28, p=.046), age (OR=0.86, p=.021), perceived health (fair: OR=13.61, p=.006), fear of falling (OR=1.04, p=.026), and two-minute step (OR=1.04, p=.049) were significant. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that physical activity intervention programs are needed to increase physical activity for community dwelling elders. Physical activity intervention programs should be developed and evaluated.
