Korean society is facing the situation in which it has to dramatically increase the supply of healthcare facilities for the elderly in the near future. Recently many nursing homes and geriatric hospitals have been supplied all over the country. But the data for planning and design of the facilities are very insufficient in Korea. So this paper aims to present the basic data for planning and design of skilled nursing homes. To do this we surveyed and analyzed 10 skilled nursing home facilities, and then present the compiled data from this analyses.

Recently, the service for nursing home has been transforming in an overall way, and along with that, the supply of the recuperation facilities for the elderly has been expanding. However, the quantitative expansion of those facilities has not been accompanied by the qualitative supply. In consideration of those shortcomings of the existing facilities, it may be necessary to ensure an improvement in qualitative terms. This study investigated and analyzed the Nursing home, examined the current situation, reconsidered the state of recuperation facilities for the elderly as part of effort to prepare for the silver society, and present measures for improvement in an attempt not to repeat mistakes that have been observed in the existing facilities in planning Nursing home that will be open and built in the upcoming days, which aimed to provide basic data that can be used in the future and explore the direction of relevant design.

With its rapid modernization and unparalleled speed of aging, South Korea faces the need for dramatic increase in its supply of nursing homes. Among the spacial components of nursing homes, residential units are considered as an essential part because the older person in nursing homes usually spend most of their time in residential units and the nursing homes are mainly composed of various residential units. It is necessary, therefore, to prepare a guideline for the plan of residential units in order to design the healthy and efficient nursing homes. This paper has first identified the concept of residential unit and analyzed 66 cases in the 62 nursing homes from 4 countries. And 4 nursing homes in Korea have been surveyed for the in-depth study. On the basis of this analysis, architectural prototypes of residential units have been proposed and the architectural characteristics of them have been compared analytically.

Elderly people should have a great load because of life in facility away from their a community. It needs careful concern for Public spaces. The mayor questions of this thesis are to seek a correlation of a Layout patterns of Public-spaces and Resident's behaviors in Public spaces ; and to seek a correlation of a Layout patterns of Public-spaces and the scale of Paid residential care facilities for Elderly people in Korea and Japan. Finally, the thesis suggests the layout patterns of public spaces that is suitable to scale of facilities and Elderly people's behaviors.

The demand of the care facilities for the elderly will be increased, because of the social changes which desire well organized medical treatment service. However, they have been illogically administrating such as preparing service at living space because of lacking places which provide living service. So the side of administration, it is necessary to have a security and improvement in that kind of needed place. The studies of elderly care facilities have been placing too much emphasis on the living space of the residential facilities and their welfare facilities compare with the service providing place which is ignored just as a part of the living space. This study focus on a situation of elderly care facilities and analyze a service space using in facilities, so it can be applied to service place plan for the future.

The purpose of this study is to build fundamental data related to corridor space for nursing home design. Elderly with dementia were observed in corridor space at two nursing homes in In-cheon City. Two types of behavior were found out through in-depth observation; Group and Personal behaviors. Group behaviors were varying according to the type of programs such as rest, care, diet, and therapeutic services. Personal behaviors could be classified into wandering and private seclusion. These two behaviors were influenced by management programs of facilities, services of care-givers and individual characteristics of residents. The result of this study was discussed on the following matters: 1) Optimum size of residential unit; 2) Working spaces of care-givers; 3) Relationship between bedroom and common space for gathering; 4) Planning for wandering path; 5) Familiarity of interior finishing materials

The purpose of this study is to provide the direction of facilities planning for the elderly regarding color planning and its general pattern. Color is an very important factor to provide the quality of living and induces an emotional response as environmental elements of facilities. At first, the general color theory was developed through the literature of review and it was applied to the facilities through the survey. Secondly, the collected data were analyzed and the results were derived.

In Germany, community based daycare facilities has been supported by long term care policies since the 1970s. With the legislation of Care Insurance, those policy has been developed further. As the use of daycare facilities decreased and the financial burden for consumers increased, administrators of facilities has been seeking for innovative programs and management methods in order to improve the service. For the same reason, policy makers have been pursuing new regulations of architectural standards of facilities. By looking at legislations (i.e., Law of Care Insurance, Law of Heim, and DIN18025) that stipulate architectural standard of facilities in Germany, this study will identify the development process of architectural change of daycare facilities. In addition, the study aims to contribute to the discussion on the use of day care facilities in Korea in terms of the legislation of Care Insurance soon to be introduced.

As a result of rapid aging speed in our society, many problems related to elderly people have happened in many parts of our society. Among them, supply for elderly housing is one of the biggest problems. To solve these problems, 'long-term care insurance' has been put in operation from July 2008. By the time of the insurance operation, Ministry of Health and Welfare is increasing facilities every year according to '10-year expending plan of Care service infra' from 2002. As a result, the supply rate of elderly facilities has been raised. But the differences of facility supply rate between regions are very high in some cases. Therefore older people who need care sometimes cannot get proper care services in some areas. In that case, the frail older people have to use other care facilities of other regions. This is not a proper situation from the point of "Aging in Place". In order to prevent that case, it is necessary to set up proper 'Daily Living Spheres' and establish elderly care plan for it. Considering the points above, this study proposes the size of 'Daily Living Spheres' for the elderly, the kind and amount of elderly care facilities in it for the construction of Community Based Elderly Care System.

This study is to realize the importance of the therapeutic environment of nursing facilities for elderly people; to comparatively analyze the therapeutic environment elements of the facilities in Gwangju, Jeonnam area, Seoul, and Japan by classifying the therapeutic environment elements according to two aspects on the basis of preceding studies; and to find out the differences among the three regional groupsnaFirst, all therapeutic elements were put together on the basis of two preceding studies based on the two aspects. Second, an expert group was organized primarily with architects and care-givers to find out the therapeutic environment elements of nursing facilities for elderly people with dementia, and to draw up an evaluation standard. Third, the regional differences were analyzed, by comparing the distribution of therapeutic elements of the facilities in Gwangju-Jeonnam area, Seoul, and Japan, through the found therapeutic environment elements. Consequently, eighteen therapeutic environment elements were found out of total 32 elements, and the elements were classified into nine factors based on the meaning of each element. The therapeutic environment elements were showed highest in Japan, and lowest in Gwangju-Chonnam area according to the comparative case analysis based on the nine factors. Especially, there were great regional differences in terms of awareness, safety, orientation, privacy, and freedom of choice.
